5 Stars: Unlikely Lovers, Saved by Desire!
Amazing story telling by Bernadette Rowley brings the reader into Lady Esta Aranati’s double life.
I think you will benefit from the meaning of these two terms upfront. Lenweri (the elven people, they have dark skin, pointed ears and are tall and elegant) and Sis Lenweri (the faction of dark elves that wishes to take over the kingdom of Thorius).
Chapter one opens with some suspense aboard the ‘Sea Sprite’ when captain, Lady Esta Aranti’s first mate wakes her up from deep sleep to inform her they have a visitor on board. I quote: “Esta drew a deep and heavy sigh, her heart kicking up a notch as she contemplated who the visitor might be. On a ship mile out to sea at night, there were few possibilities and none of them good.”
In chapter three the mood shifts and I quote:
…Esta moved to the bow and stood with the wind in her face, the black strands of her wig streaming behind her. It was chill but not wet and she reveled in the dance of her ship over the waves. Sea Sprite was one of the joys of her life and sailing one of her great loves. When she was on the ocean, she was free of earthly ties and a little of its wildness seeped into her, giving her strength for the trials of estate life. Lately, she had found it almost impossible to return to the estate without a nagging sense of dread.
…You seem almost happy tonight, sister,” Katrine said, joining her in the bow. Katrine was wildness personified, with a lithe body and long black hair that she rarely tied back. Not for her the wig as she had less need for a full disguise, shunning public life as she did. She wore leather breeches, flowing black shirts and a broad black satin mask decorated with stars. Her piercing blue eyes were now fixed on Esta.
…I am happy, Katrine,” Esta said. “What makes you think I am ever unhappy?
I invite you to join Katrine and Esta as they sail the sea with visions of finding treasure on their minds.
I hope the quotes above whet your appetite for strong female characters, rugged men, pirates, treasure maps, adventure, sword and sorcery and of course romance. All eight books in the Queenmakers series stands-alone, so jump right into the fantasy world of Author Bernadette Rowley.

People Of The West: A Short Story Timeline by David M. McGowan.
Nine short pieces of fiction constructed around 170 years of North American history and interspersed at intervals by fourteen poems.
The first story is a fictional accounting of the first European to reach the Pacific coast of Canada. Following are fictional pictures of the winners and losers who became builders of North America and thus, eventually, all winners and though they didn’t know it or want it, builders of what exists today.
Thomas Brash is trying to escape but knows he never will. No thinking person can escape from their past. Pursuing him is the memory of the family he lost to cholera. Perhaps he believes that traveling alone in a wild, dangerous land will end all his memories; there is no doubt he wishes to be alone. Whatever his intentions the appearance of Frank Clement and the circumstances of that meeting upset those plans. Brash views Clement as an uneducated child who requires fatherly protection and guidance. Clement views Brash as a tenderfoot and can not understand how anyone who knows so little could live so long. These two loners are joined by others and they all become partners. Having achieved relative sanctuary and surrounded by civilization their wilderness past comes back to haunt them.
Review by Lydia Efobi: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Wholesome read! Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2023. Partners, a spellbinding read by Dave McGowan, is a book about Thomas Brash. The devastating loss of his family to cholera continues to haunt him. He yearns to escape his memories and seeks solace in the wild, dangerous land he traverses, hoping to find peace in solitude. However, his plans halt due to the unexpected arrival of Frank Clement, whom Thomas tags naïve and in need of guidance.
Despite their differences, circumstances cause these two men to form an unlikely partnership. Unfortunately, as they carve out a life for themselves and find relative safety among civilization, their past in the wilderness comes back to haunt them. The memories of their former lives are never far away, and they must confront the harsh realities of their past to find a way forward.
The book offers a unique perspective on the Canadian frontier in 1866. The author’s meticulous attention to detail had me drawing my shoulders up close to my ears as I sneaked through the bushes with Thomas. It goes to show you how Dave McGowan excellently wrote the book such that it brings your imaginary prowess to play.
Similarly, the story unfolded at a perfect pace. It was full of twists and turns, and the characters are likable for their unique qualities. The writing style in this book is captivating and engaging, with no dull moments throughout the story. The author’s knowledge of Indian customs is impressive, and I enjoyed learning about them as Thomas taught Frank how to interact with the new camp of Indians they encountered.
Inevitably, this book is a 5-star read, and I recommend this book to buffs of adventure, history, and stories of resilience.
Burton Review: “This is a story that flows easily between the concept of camaraderie and the intense events that the partners endure together; I enjoyed the story and think anyone interested in a colonial era type story will enjoy this one.
There is an incident about two-thirds of the way into the book where Brash uses a military tactic … A brilliant plot piece: loved it.”
Review by Barbara Martin (barbaramartin.blogspot.com): “Partners is a well told story that entertains and educates. It’s a long book too, providing a big read for your money”.
Review by Clayton Bye: “As I said when I reviewed Homesteader, if you enjoy westerns or historical yarns, Partners will offer a unique and refreshing read”.
Review by Anne Boling for Reader’s Favorite (5 stars of 5): “Partners” is quite an adventure. Dave McGowan is a talented author. Fans of westerns need to make note of his name for they will want to follow all of his works.
Review by Trudi LoPreto for Reader’s Favorite (3 stars of 5): “Partners” is a study in human character. David McGowan has written a story that is believable with a strong plot. If you are a fan of Western genre with a thrust in details, this is a book you will enjoy”.
Review by Alice DiNizo for Reader’s Favorite (5 stars of 5): “Partners” by David McGowan is a readable, enjoyable Western about two men distanced by upbringing and age. Good dialogue and short, succinct chapters make “Partner” a delightful read for history and western fans alike”.
From The Author: I was sitting in a restaurant having some lunch one day and heard two men behind me discussing how a young man and an old man could never get along because of their different experiences or lack of same that would be part of their make-up. I had witnessed, as has everyone who pays attention, the same clashing of characters but felt sure that a series of shared experiences could alter that difficulty. I therefore wrote a story about it.
My “old” character some may have difficulty with, particularly if they are somewhere between 40 and my age. Tom Brash is depicted as only being in his late thirties but remember, in the tough world of the late 1800s, without antibiotics, army trained “surgeons” who simply cut things off if there was some question about their viability … well, 40 was “gettin’ up there.”
My “young” character is also slightly older than many – boys and girls – who were thrust out into a world for which they were ill prepared. Due to the situations shortening their parent’s lives listed above many found themselves on their own while still in the early teens or even younger. However, I wanted my character to go through some trials and tribulations and decided Frank Clement should be old enough to live through those problems so he had time to become a partner to Tom and the two US Civil War veterans who join them.

Claiming your share of the so called “free” land in the rugged and wide Canadian frontier in the 1880s was a difficult, demanding task. When someone tries to run roughshod over the “nesters” increasing the workload and demands, its time to take a stand.
There is more than bad weather for Hank James to contend with as he rides in search of the land of his dreams and the woman of his heart. Portis Martin, manager of a large cattle company, has no use for the small homesteaders that have begun to pepper the area…and he isn’t afraid of using every dirty trick he knows to run them out.
And Portis had been doing a pretty good job of it until what he decides are two saddle tramps, Hank James and his partner, Harry Gilmore arrive in the area.
Hank James wants equality. Hank James wants a life-time partner.
And, damn it, he’s going to get both.
Review by David McGowan: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Facing down a bully. Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2016. Verified Purchase. Hank James and riding partner Harry Gilmore ride the rails east to look for the woman Hank thought would be his mate for life. They unload their horses and gear at Canmore and immediately make an enemy.
Riding on into Calgary they find Sharon but Hank is suddenly not sure if she is who he thought she was. He does decide to stay around long enough to see if she is or isn’t.
If they are staying around for a while anyway Hank and Harry become homesteaders. When they met Portis Martin east of Canmore, he did not think they showed him proper respect but as homesteaders they became threatening enemies.
Hank and Harry’s new enemy is manager of a very big cattle ranch. He has the money, the livestock, and the manpower. He does not have time for saddle tramps. He also doesn’t have a conscience that will interfere with getting them out of the way by any means possible – including attacking this woman that seems to interest them.

Review by R. A. Quinn: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. A must read for any Western fan! Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2013. Homesteader, Finding Sharon is as unique a western that I have ever read. It takes place in 1886, in Canada. Friends Hank and Harry set out to homestead near Calgary and learn firsthand how ruthless the ones who control the cattle could be. Hank James is different than the average homesteader and stands his ground.
I drove through that area this past summer and this book took me back to some of the most beautiful country Canada has to offer. This is not only a well written story but it seems to be a history lesson as well. The cattle industry was not limited to the open ranges in the U.S., nor was the fight for that range. You will not be disappointed in how author D.M. McGowan has spun this fine western novel. If you are a fan of westerns or well told stories; Homesteader, Finding Sharon will not disappoint at all.

The Great Liquor War: A Western Adventure by D. M. McGowan.
The year is 1885. Hank James has been in Canada several months panning gold from a stream near Roswell, British Columbia. When he hears a prizefight will be held in town, he attends along with everyone for miles around. With a little help from the fight referee, he wins big betting on the fight. Having realized that the life of a miner isn’t nearly as romantic or rewarding as he expected, and with advice from the policeman who helped him win money on the fight, Hank goes to Farwell to haul freight with pack horses for contractors building the transcontinental railroad.
The railroad’s security, a detachment of North West Mounted Police, have maintained across the West that no liquor be allowed one mile on either side of the rail bed. Provincial authorities disagree. Hank James believes in honoring and repaying his debts, but that doesn’t mean he should be involved in a war between the BC Provincial Police and the North West Mounted.
He and his partners have trouble enough running their freight business, they don’t need to be caught between competing policemen. They are already stuck between Canada’s transcontinental railroad people and the contractors doing the actual construction. While the police are fighting one another, who is looking for criminals, particularly those stealing Hank’s horses? Despite a variety of jobs, D.M. McGowan now works as a commercial driver and lives near Mile “0” of the world-famous Alaska Highway.
His stories bring Canadian history to life. “I believe in seeing morality and societal responsibility rewarded. Too much of today’s fiction seems to lead into the dark instead of the light.”
5 Stars: US and Canadian History Combined With Legends From The 1800’s!
The Great Liquor War by D. M. McGowan is a western pioneering era saga that combines great story telling, true-to-life cowboy experience with US and Canadian history combined with legends from the 1800’s.
The main character Hank James was born in Canada and migrated south into the US with his family after the Civil War. Hank’s father headed towards Oregon in search of a farmstead while protecting his family from raids by outlaws and Indians. They made it as far as Kansas to find that the land was too dry to farm so pushed on to Oregon to find the land was too wet. With Mother Nature as their biggest obstacle and many mouths to feed young Hank James set out on his own. He settled down with his own gold mine claim near Rossland, British Columbia in 1984.
Hank wasn’t afraid of hard work, but he wanted more out of life than to eke out a living on his claim. With tenacity Hank took advantage of the Transcanada Railroad, found some partners and started his own freight business. Life should be good, but where there is industry, technology, commerce and economy, there are criminals.
Quote from page 37.
…“It didn’t take a detective to know that the horse thief had played a little joke on the Provincial Police. Constable Art Hubbard was over six feet tall and probably ten pounds lighter than the one eighty mentioned in the description. Not only was he a long way from round, he was also clean shaven.
…I gave Constable Hubbard my story, ending with the recovery of the bay gelding and the description I had from Miller. “An’ the fella called himself Art Hubbard,” I added.
…The Constable’s expression didn’t change. He worked his chew around into one cheek and sent a stream of tobacco juice into the waste basket. “Feller with a sense o’ humor,” he noted, and then added. “It’ll be one ‘o Bulldog Kelley’s outfit. They work out o’ some of the illegal saloons t’ be found back in the bush. We catch one or two of ‘em every now an’ then, but we can’t get Kelley, an’ he’s the head o’ the snake. I can think of one or two that might fit your description, but not a one that had a full beard. An’ this fella’s probably shaved by now.”
…I wrote out my story, signed it, and returned to work.”
Between the horse thieves, authority over liquor sales and a war between the BC Provincial Police and the North West Mounted Hank is he in over his head? Only time will tell if he makes the right choices and will he win the heart and loyalty of Sharon Dalton?
Saddle up your horse, holster your gun and join a rugged western cast of characters that will take you back to the reality and the legends of the Wild West.
The Great Liquor War by D. M. McGowan shares nuggets of history told within a great story of human experience in the Wild West.

The Making Of Jake McTavish: A Western Adventure by D. M. McGowan.
Synopsis: In the west of the 1890s, Jake’s wife is raped and murdered, an image from which he attempts to escape and hide. When two thieves try to take what little he has left, Jake realizes he must face the past and solve his wife’s murder to truly escape the images in his head. But to find the killer, he discovers even more surprises …
Jake McTavish left his home in central Canada when he was in his early teens. After working ships on the Great Lakes, fishing Lake Winnipeg, feeding cattle south of Fort Garry, and shooting wolves on the prairies, he starts his own cattle operation in the foothills of the western mountains. Then he meets his life-long partner, Anna.
Jake and Anna were married three years when it all came crashing down. He came home to find his beautiful wife raped and murdered.
In an attempt to escape the vision of his butchered wife and all that he lost, Jake runs deep into the mountains, where he spends three years trapping and panning gold. When two outlaws attempt to rob him and leave him for dead, Jake finally comes out of the stupor he has lived in and begins to fight back.
First, he deals with the two thugs. Next, he returns to his homestead to find his wife’s killer. Solving a murder after several years is no easy task, especially when it includes surprises he didn’t want to find..
5 Stars: 1800’s Western Pioneering Era Saga!
The Making of Jake McTavish by D. M. McGowan is an 1800’s western pioneering era saga that combines exceptional story telling with an historical tale told by Peace Country pioneer John Brown.
Well-developed characters and true to life settings with descriptive writing put the reader into the story. The main character Jake McTavish stands alone in his empty cabin with his thoughts that he voiced to his blue tick hound, “Maybe I’ll just have t’shoot somebody. That way the government will have t’ feed us ‘til they punch my ticket and bury me.”
Life had been especially hard since the murder of his wife. For the fourth year he must continue his Peace River trek in British Columbia (1898) to take the furs that he had collected by canoe down to Ft. St John. This is an important ritual as Jake trades bails of skins for cash to pay for supplies and to repair equipment heading into the new season. Times were hard enough without the ambush that knocked him out cold and took most of everything that he had in his camp.
Just 11 years ago “in the spring of 1887 Jake became a wealthy saddle tramp. He only had fourteen Canadian dollars, two U.S. dollars and eighty-six cents, but he was rich in other goods. He had four horses, a fine, double rigged saddle, a short barrelled Colt pistol, a Colt Navy .36 and a Winchester rifle. He also had a serviceable pack saddle, bed roll, enough food to last a month and the pack covered with two tarps.”
By 1889 Jake had spent two years with the Cambridge Cattle Company and had accumulated some money. With a deep yearning for something more and the passing of the Canadian Homestead Act, Jake chose three hundred and twenty isolated acres in the foothills north of the Rocky Mountains. In the fall of 1891 with 15 yearlings to sell he met Anna Porenski. When she married him, he no longer felt driven, because he had it all. Anna was raised on a farm, so ranch life came easy to her and she enjoyed gardening. The only thing missing are children for fate has refused to grant Jake and wife Anna a baby. To end such dreams Anna is murdered and the responding Mounted Policeman comes close to accusing Jake.”
Travel with Jake McTavish on a journey to find Anna’s killer or killers.
The Making of Jake McTavish by D. M. McGowan for the author’s incredible story telling of Jake McTavish. I invite you to also read: The Great Liquor War, Homesteader: Finding Sharon and Partners. D. M. McGowan tells us that Cattle Business is coming soon.

Review by Lydia Efobi: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. One of the best western tales I’ve read in a while!! Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2022. The Making of Jake McTavish, by D. M. McGowan, is one 1800s canard set in the west. It encompasses unique storytelling with a chronological tale. This western tale features well-developed characters that are wholesome make-believe. The book is set in such a manner that it is easy for readers to actualize the atmosphere. Without giving too much away, the book follows a young man, Jake, up to his marriage till his wife’s rape case and murder. Jake’s response to the varied challenges makes up a very intriguing plot. There’s a solid diffusion of ecstasy in this book. At first, I was a bit skeptical about the setting, but alas, I enjoyed every bit of the book. The language was easy to connect with, and comprehension was flawless. I would recommend this book to historical mystery buffs. Ultimately, this is a 5-star novel and deserves the broadest possible readership.
Review by JP Blickenstaff: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Great Story. Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2021. This is a good Western of 1890 Canada. That historical setting is almost worth the read. But the story keeps your turning the pages. It will not let you quit reading. The story follows a young man up to his marriage But his wife is murdered. The man’s reaction, running to escape the devastation, the mystery of the murder and solving the murder makes for a fascinating story. D. M. McGowan wrote a good book.
Review by Amazon Customer: 5.0 out of 5 Stars, McGowan Scores Again. Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2016. Another good western by D. M. McGowan. The author combines a plot full of twists and turns with a well-described setting mainly in the foothills and mountains of Alberta and BC. There are accurate references to historical events that took place in the area. Interesting titbits are inserted about how a man could survive in the wilderness if resourceful. The characters are believable. I especially liked Jake’s rather cutting wit. Paula, with her independent spirit and determination, is refreshing compared to the paper-thin development of the female in traditional westerns. I’m looking forward to Mr. McGowan’s next book – Cattle Business.

The forgoing is the bio from the back of my novels and one might conclude from this information that I was a poor employee … either lazy or didn’t know what I was doing … and was kicked off a lot of jobs. You would be partially correct, at least in surmising that I don’t know what I am doing. As for my being a poor employee, you would have to ask my bosses … although I think I’ve managed to trick the one I have now.
Of course, when I had my own business, my boss thought I was marvelous.
Truthfully, I’ve managed over the years to find employment regardless of my location or the problems that might exist with the economy. I enjoyed much of that experience at the time and am glad that I attained it.
I’ve also visited a good portion of North America and lived in several areas of Canada where I met some great people and enjoyed some wonderful country.
Speaking of great people, Karen and I are parents to four great people who have supplied eight grandchildren who show that improvements can be possible in each generation. One of those has added a great-grand daughter to the line.

London attorney, Shakira Constantine finally agrees to spend the day with her handsome client, Alex Lancaster. While riding in the countryside, the couple finds themselves caught in a time warp and transported back to the 14th century-and an England preparing for war. Everyone believes Alex is the Baron Guy Guisard, a baron who died in the upcoming battle. If they can’t find a way to return to the 21st Century, Alex will have to sail with the army to certain death. Shakira will be left alone to survive in the alien and terrifying medieval world.
5 Stars: From Predictable to Well Researched Medieval Drama!
After Enjoying Heroes Live Forever (Knights in Time Book 1), I naturally turned to Journey in Time (Knights in Time Book 2). In book two we meet Shakira Constantine, beautiful, independent, successful London attorney. When Shakira meets Alex Lancaster (music producer and playboy), their destiny is intertwined when she accepts him as a client, goes against her own ethics, joining him for a weekend at his cottage in the Gloucestershire countryside.
Nothing could prepare these two for the time travel adventure that carries them back to the medieval 13th century. Twists, Turns, humor, danger, romance, and your own emotions will keep you turning the pages, until they return to the 21st century.
Let me bring you into the story (Chapter 18):
…Shakira cracked open one eye. If she was very, very lucky, this would be Alex’s cottage. If she was very, very unlucky, she’d see the walls of an old Keep. Rough cut, honey colored stone confirmed the worst. She closed her eyes and tried to convince herself she still slept and this was part of a horrible nightmare. She refused to acknowledge the noises that drifted up sounded too authentic for a dream.
…Gates creaked, doors slammed, dogs barked, horses whinnied, geese honked, one after another. Women shouted orders. Young voices answered, followed by the sound of running feet. The sun hadn’t fully appeared on the horizon yet, but castle folk see no reason to be quiet. Their daily life begins when the first bright streaks show themselves.
… “Rocky?” Alex patted her shoulder. “Rocky, we need to get up.”
…Torn, she lay curled and silent. She didn’t want to face waking in 1355, but she definitely didn’t want to believe she dreamt making love to Alex either.”
I invite you to join Shakira (nickname rocky) and Alex (known as Baron Guy Guisard) as they discover how to survive in the 13th medieval century and find their way home. I love this authors characters and story. Author Chris Karlsen will frustrate you at times with her flawed human characters. Your emotions will fluctuate, but in the end, Chris knows what is best. There is a must-read Epilogue.

The five-book series ‘Knights in Time’ include Heroes Live Forever (Book 1), Journey in Time (Book 2), Knight Blindness (Book 3), In Time for You (Book 4) and Losing Time Book 5). Never fear, there are more paranormal, romance, time travel series written by Chris Karlsen (internationally published author). 5 Stars: Romantic Dilemma Between A Young Woman And Ghost From The 1300’s.
Author Chris Karlsen is one of my favorite story tellers. Her creative mind takes history, time, characters and story line to a place few have travelled. As a fan of the paranormal, Chris captures my imagine and leaves me wanting more.
In Heroes Live Forever (Knights in Time series book 1), we meet Elinor Hawthorne, a remarkable young schoolteacher. She has who has just inherited Badger Hollow Manor in Norfolk, England (1980), from her grandmother. Elinor has a no-nonsense attitude about ghosts; when she meets and has to share living space with, two medieval knights killed in the 1300’s.
Ladies: If you were to fall in your home, would you prefer to fall into the strong arms of a strong, handsome, ghost knight, or just hit the floor? Elinor’s experience begins an amazing friendship, love story, fantasy, and time travel adventure, you will not want to miss.
The first part of this story will touch your heart and even bring you sadness. The second part of this book will give you a renewed sense the of destiny and timeless love.
The dilemma is between flesh and spirt. Let me bring you into a conversation these two medieval ghost knights, Basil Mandeville and Guy Guiscard are having in Chapter 15.
…After Elinor left that evening, the knights rode to the castle ruins. Neither spoke until they reached the parapet.
…Guy propped himself against the wall and stretched his long legs out in front of him. The night breeze blew leaves over the stones and across where he lay.
…Basil stood, elbows on a crenel and where he had a view of Elinor’s house bathed in the moonlight.
…Guy tilted his head back and closed his eyes. “Do you want to talk about that scene you made over the butcher’s flowers?”
… “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
… “Don’t be evasive. It ill suits you. You’re jealous, although, I cannot fathom why you’d be so upset over a silly gift from some tradesman.”
… “That is ridiculous. I have never been jealous in my life.”
… “If you were cut right now, you’d bleed green. It certainly wasn’t your aesthetic sense that was offended by her display of roses. Admit it, you’re smitten with her.” Guy cracked one eye open and peered at Basil.
… “You’re trying to irritate me.”
…True, he was fond of Elinor, too fond. He enjoyed being with her more than he cared to say, even to Guy.
…However, jealousy was too preposterous to entertain seriously.
… “I will grant I like her very much, but so do you, do you not?” Basil said.
…Guy shifted so they faced each other. “Yes, I like her, enough to wish I’d met her a long, long time ago.” The unexpected confession got Basil’s attention. “Elinor has none of the brittleness I’ve known in many women. She’s a warm, witty, comely lady. She’s also flesh and blood.”
…Uncomfortable under his friend’s scrutiny, Basil turned away and focused on the house again. “Is there a point to this discussion?”
… “She’s a flesh and blood woman with visions for her future.” Guy rose and joined Basil. “You are but a vision of a past flesh and blood man.” He laid his hand on Basil’s shoulder, “Make sure it’s enough for her my friend.” Guy walked away, leaving Basil alone with his thoughts.
Can Basil Manneville compete with Elinor’s human admirer?

An internationally published author, Chris has traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Near East, and North Africa, satisfying her need to visit places she read about. A Venomous Love, won the ‘Global Grand Prize’ in the thriller/suspense category last year (2021) from Chanticleer Reviews.
The killer whispered- “A pretty damsel…worth a pretty risk.
“It’s 1890. A veteran, Detective Rudyard Bloodstone has fought a brutal battle and witnessed war horrors that haunt his nightmares. Now one of those horrors has followed him home from Africa.
A vicious predator, the Cape cobra, can kill a man in thirty minutes. A suspect using the snake as a weapon in robberies is terrorizing London. When the crimes escalate into murder, a victim’s daughter, Honoria Underhill, becomes the focus of the killer.
After several attempts on her life, Scotland Yard threatens to take over the high-profile case. With few leads to follow, Bloodstone and his partner must now fight department politics and catch the killer before Underhill becomes another murder victim.
The Story Has A Unique Twist!
5 Stars: ‘A Venomous Love’ is book three in The Bloodstone Series. Each book stands alone, so I invite you to begin reading.
One appealing nature of ‘A Venomous Love’ is the historical snapshots of the Victorian period, where main character Detective Rudyard Bloodstone conducts his investigations. The book opens in London, April 1890.
This period in history finds Detective Rudyard Bloodstone severely limited in his ability to solve crimes. No fancy labs or DNA testing. The perplexing case of a thief using an extremely deadly method to steal valuables from his victims, has Detective Rudyard Bloodstone and his partner Detective Archie Holbrook putting their collective, raw detective skills to the test. With Scotland Yard breathing down their necks, the clock is ticking, and another murder is simply a matter of time.
Author Chris Karlsen (retired police detective) gives us an excerpt from ‘A Venomous Love’:
…Puzzled, Ruddy asked, “You say the body is still in the chapel?
…Couldn’t the nurse bring an exam table to put him on and start treatment?”
…“She did. Young and I attempted to help but he suffered violent convulsions. Because the hospital is for children, they don’t have restraints. The head nurse instructed us to leave him back on the floor. She was afraid he’d fall off the table.”
…“Makes sense.” The time-frame of Underhill’s death didn’t make sense. At minimum it usually took an hour and more often, hours for the venom to kill. A horrible thought occurred to Ruddy. What if it was a different suspect with a different lethal snake? “But he died while you were still here?”
…“Yes. He convulsed brutally hard a few more times and an excessive amount of drool came out his mouth. Then he lost consciousness. A nurse put a blanket over him and a pillow under his head. He died as she was making him comfortable.”
…“Strange. This is abnormally fast even for cobra venom.” Flanders stepped up on Ruddy’s right. “What is it, constable?”
…“Shall I leave you to start my search?” Flanders asked.
…“Yes. Collect anything, and I mean anything, you find that looks out of the ordinary,” Archie told him. “This case is so unusual we can’t be sure what is important and what isn’t.”
…The nurse led them to the curtained-off bed. Honoria Underhill lay on her side softly sobbing. Her legs were curled up so she fit on the short bed meant for a child. The nurses had covered her with a blanket. When she saw Ruddy and Archie, she sat up and swung her legs down to the side of the bed.
…“Yes. We know this is traumatic for you but we need to ask you to repeat what happened with as much detail as you can recall,” Ruddy told her.
…“I understand.” Her shoulders trembled. She buried her fists in her skirt and kept her head down as she fought to control her emotions.
…Ruddy brought the conversation back to the crime. “Did the suspect say anything when he attacked?”
…“’A pretty little damsel, worth a pretty risk,’ he said as he rushed toward us. Then he leapt at me with the snake in hand inches from my face. Father pushed me out of the man’s reach and stepped be- tween us. My father tried to knock the man’s hand away and swatted at the animal.”
…She dabbed at her nose again and then offered the handkerchief back to Archie who waved off the return. “It happened so fast,” Honoria continued. “In the time it took me to blink, the snake’s throat blew outward, like a fan opening.” She demonstrated the action with her hands. “A second later it lunged and struck.”
The story has a unique twist, a well-thought-out plot, and interesting characters that will keep you turning the page. If you like crime mysteries, I encourage you to purchase this book, and the entire ‘The Bloodstone Series’.

The Ack Ack Girl won a ‘Distinguished Favorite’ designation from NYC Big Book Awards.
The Ack Ack Girl is a finalist for first prize in military genre from Book Excellence. The winners will be announced sometime this spring 2023.
In 1941, the German war machine had conquered all of Europe, only England remains free. Hitler knows to invade England the Luftwaffe must defeat the Royal Air Force. While under constant attack, the valiant pilots of the RAF manage to keep the enemy from executing an invasion. But the RAF suffers great losses. England is in desperate need of more pilots. As a result, the government takes a huge chance and establishes unique teams of women known as Ack Ack Girls. These women are trained to work anti-aircraft units, freeing men up for other combat details.
The Ack Ack teams are high risk assignments, targeted by enemy bombers and fighter planes. Ack Ack Girls must be courageous and quick-witted. Ava Armstrong is excited to be chosen to be among them. Her anti-aircraft unit borders a major RAF base where several squadrons of pilots are deployed. Chris Fairfield, who earned a Distinguished Flying Cross in the Battle of Britain, is one of pilots stationed by Ava’s unit.
When Ava and Chris’s paths cross, sparks fly. War lends an urgency to life and love. Their romance grows deep and strong despite the danger that surrounds their daily lives. After the men in Chris’s squad see his plane get shot down, Ava is told he went down in flames and cannot have survived.
Logic says the men who were with him that day are right in believing him dead.
Her love says they’re wrong.
Ack Ack Girl Back Cover Blurb: A country under attack and the story of one woman’s fight to protect England and her heart.1941. The German war machine has crushed all of Europe-only England holds fast. To force a surrender, the German Luftwaffe bombs cities and villages the length of the country. As the battle rages, Britain is in desperate need to put more pilots in the air.
To free up more men a new unit is formed: The Ack Ack Girls. These special teams of courageous women will now fight in the anti-aircraft stations. Determined to be part of the effort, Ava Armstrong, volunteers for one of the special teams.
Her unit just happens to be located near an RAF airfield teaming with pilots. Sparks fly, and not just from artillery, when Ava crosses paths with Chris Fairfield, a handsome and cocky pilot stationed there. But nothing is easy in time of war, not even love.
5 Stars: ‘The Ack Ack Girl’ is a World War II Historical Romance by Author Chris Karlsen. This book to be very educational, with a compelling story. We should all respect the bravery of these The “Ack Ack Teams”. They shot down enemy planes from the ground. England did use female teams to ferry planes, cargo, fighters and bombers from the factories to the airfields. That is a different unit entirely and they did not engage enemy planes or participate in combat.
If you love danger, romance and suspense, you will love this first book in the “Love and War’ series by Author Chris Karlsen. I wrestled over what passage of the book to share with you. At first, I thought I would share a wonderful romantic scene, instead I decided to bring you into the war. I quote from Chapter Twelve: December 7, 1941:
…Team members not on duty huddled around the radio in the women’s barracks, listening to the Spike Milligan comedy hour.
…As many women as could fit lounged on the nearest cots, the others sat on the floor with the gunners. Ava adjusted the pillow from her bed against the iron leg of Vera’s cot to cushion the middle of her spine. She’d just got it fixed when the BBC announcer came on.
…“We interrupt this program with an important announcement. The United States and Britain are now at war with the Japanese Empire.”
…All the team members exchanged looks of shock.
…“No, it can’t be,” Vera said, staring at the radio while the announcer continued.
…“At 7:55 this morning, Japan’s long threatened aggression in the Far East began with an air attack on U.S. Naval bases in the Pacific.
…Fresh reports are coming in every minute from Tokyo that Japan has announced a formal declaration of war against both the U.S. and Britain.”
…Fear, deep and soul-crushing gripped, Ava that they might lose the war. Then despair hit her. That brought tears she fought to keep from shedding. She’d fought any acknowledgement that England might lose to Germany. But a war with Japan meant they’d have to defend the British colonies in the East. How? Every able-bodied man not an old-age-pensioner was already serving. Manpower was stretched from Europe to the North Atlantic all the way to Northern Africa.
…“How can we fight on four fronts? We can’t,” Vera asked Tommy.
…Tommy was the oldest and most senior team member. All the others naturally went to him for war advice and analysis.
…Ava wasn’t the only one worried about manpower, which was no relief to her at the moment.
…“Steady on, Vera,” Tommy said. “The Canadians and Aussies have been fighting cheek-to-jowl with us from the start. They’re not going anywhere.”
…Ava thought Tommy’s theory wrong this time. Either the Aussies pull their division from Singapore, leaving the British alone to defend it or they pull divisions from the west. “Their forces aren’t that big. They’ll have to split some off. With this attack on Pearl, the Aussies have to be damned twitchy over a possible invasion by Japan.
…..I wouldn’t blame them for leaving to protect their homeland.”
It is up to you to read this book “Ack Ack Girl” to find out how everything turns out for the “Ack Ack Teams”. The characters come to live in your hands and they are heroic. The Author’s Note at the end of this book is very interesting and the author shares a couple of chapters from her other romance series at the end of this book.
Enjoy all Author Chris Karlsen’s Historical Romance and Historical Romance Suspense Thrillers: “Dark Water Series”, “Knights in Time Series”, “The Bloodstone Series”, and a new single Historical Romance title “Choosing Heart or Home” (warm-hearted holiday novella). Many of Chris Karlsen’s books have a Spanish and/or Portuguese Edition.
I am looking forward to reading Chris Karlsen’s second book in this “Love and War” Series.

I spent nineteen of my twenty-five years in law enforcement as a detective. Long before I became a police officer, I wanted to be a writer. But I feared it wasn’t a practical profession and lacked the confidence to an attempt at it. Shortly after I retired from law enforcement, I found the courage to try my hand writing a story that I had floated around in my imagination for years. I started taking classes to learn the craft and began my first book at the same time.
When I went to conferences and seminars the same question was asked: why don’t I write a cop story? I never had the desire to write a contemporary one murder/suspense. I enjoy a good police story as much as anyone. My favorite authors in the genre are Mike Connelly and Joe Wambaugh. I just didn’t want to take that road.
I love history and began a series of historical romances involving time travel. While writing that series I got the idea for an old-fashioned detective. I’d visited England and London many times. I knew he’d work in London and I couldn’t think of a better setting for murder/suspense than Victorian England. From that idea, Detective Rudyard Bloodstone (Ruddy) was created.
When I started the Bloodstone series, it hadn’t occurred to me how much of my personal experience as a detective would influence the stories. I used my years of interviewing suspects to enhance the mindset(s) of the killers. I found including the POV of the antagonists added a lot of interesting aspects to their characters. They remained villains, but they weren’t flat, black and white ones.
In the first book, Silk, Detective Bloodstone must battle politics and the class structure while pursuing his suspect. In Snifter of Death, the second book, he and his partner find themselves investigating a killer that is the last person anyone would suspect. In my latest book, A Venomous Love, there are two villains. An added twist to the case is the murderer’s use of a most unusual weapon.
My detective experience became important in the execution of Ruddy’s investigations. Silk is set in 1888, Snifter of Death in 1889 and A Venomous Love in 1890. He literally has no forensic science to help him. With each murder, I had to walk the scene with him, observe with him, and consider what could possibly serve as a clue. To stay true to the period, I had to strip away everything I knew from modern investigations and fall back on old fashioned police work.
Detectives everywhere, and over time, have all handled the occasional bizarre case. One of the main elements of A Venomous Love is the weapon used. It is based on an actual event related to me years ago by a London police officer friend of mine. The setting, the time period of the story, and the weapon add a colorful angle.
I found the challenge of writing a cop story with a Victorian setting surprisingly fun. Detective Bloodstone has become my favorite character to write. I love filling his world with people from all walks of life in that period. He definitely will get more cases to solve in the near future.
I am currently working on a fourth book in the Bloodstone series called, Killer Friends. It should be ready for publication sometime the middle or fall of next year.

Gunfighters, Thieves and Lawmen by David Milton McGowan.
Sully Wheeler doesn’t care why his cattle are disappearing. He doesn’t care why but it has to stop. Perhaps it’s the cost of hiding from his past, but who would steal from a one-time gunfighter?
The NW Mounted Policeman that Sully contacted appeared more intent on stopping vigilante action than in stopping theft. If that proves to be the case, Sully will recover his own property, even if it takes gunfire to do it.
Who is this Mountie, anyway? Is he a cop or something else entirely? Is he working to support the crown, leave the crown or actually do something for the settlers?
And while we’re talking about that Mountie, isn’t he spending too much time with that newspaper lady?

How do you save your family when they are faced with hate and racism on all sides? How do you avoid fear every minute of every day?
In the years following the North West Rebellion of 1885 many Métis “disappeared” as many went into hiding to avoid racism and mistreatment. Admittedly, some like Gabriel Dumont went south of the 49th parallel into the US. What happened to the rest?
Almost a century later Métis suddenly appeared as individuals and communities throughout the West. Perhaps “Into the Mountains”, fiction though it is, supplies some explanation.

Sad but not discouraged, Aden continues to help and care for others. However, when his mother gets injured, he discovers his horn can perform miracles. It was that first miracle that softened the hearts of the others and inspired them to lead a God-filled life as well.
This story is about love, acceptance, kindness and giving. It is the story of the First Unicorn and how God’s creation would succeed at greatness.
“Anything is possible if love is what you choose. Miracles can happen if you share the good news.”
5 Stars: Love, Acceptance, Kindness and Giving.
‘The First Unicorn’ is the prequel to the Award-Winning children’s masterpiece titled ‘The First Unibear.’
Like with ‘The First Unibear’ children’s imagination will soar, as the colorful illustrations bring to life, the skillfully written and inspired story. The fantasy is enchanted and the lessons taught will remain in each child’s heart.
This story is about a young horse named Aden. Rather than staying with the herd, his energy and goals bring adventure and friendship to all those he meets. Aden’s prayers are answered, after his mother gets injured. God blesses Aden with a remarkable gift and miracles begin to happen.
Aden becomes a leader through love, acceptance and giving. It is Aden’s first miracle that softened the hearts of the others and inspire them to lead a God filled life.
I recommend this picture book for all young readers 4-10 years old. ‘The First Unicorn’ and ‘The First Unibear’ should be placed in community, church, and school libraries. I hope this book finds its ways to those children confined to hospitals and homeless shelters.

5 Stars: Thought Provoking Read!
It is my privilege as Editor at Book Marketing Global Network, to award 5 Stars to ‘The Traveler and Other Short Stories’ by Anthony Arnold.
Anthony is an intellectual scholar, writer, author and poet. He has the aptitude to analyze black historical events. He has a unique perspective and skill to write his impressions about black history: using very descriptive language, short stories and poetry, while weaving a short futuristic tale into his story.
Anthony acknowledges it is not his job to tell his readers everything about black history. Instead, he writes to light a fire under his readers, so they will do their own research. He writes with unabashed honesty and is deeply saddened that the current generation hasn’t learned black history. He is keenly aware they don’t speak about their own family history or even black history in general.
‘The Traveler and Other Short Stories’ takes the reader through some of the trials and tribulation within black history from the first slave ships to the liberation of blacks in America. He tells a futurist tale of “The Traveler’. This traveler is the “last of a space faring race who traveled the galaxy.” These travelers have watched the development of species in thousands of worlds. You must read this book to understand the Traveler’s assessment of earth history and how earth inhabitants treat each other. Does this traveler unlike “The Watchers” refuse to intervene?
This is a thought provoking read. If you read with an open mind, you will be changed, for the better or worse. Author Anthony Arnold words touched my soul.

About Anthony Arnold aka The Kingpen: A budding Poet and Writer, as early as the third grade when he composed his very first poem, Florida-raised writer Anthony Arnold fell in love with words finding them to be a comfort and mainstay throughout his life. Raised to be a reader by his grandmother, he soon developed a keen awareness and love for Black History. He has a particular gift in this genre although he is one of the most versatile Poets of his generation.
As an avid reader of all genres of literature, he has found a particular passion for Black History. He believes his ancestry and the legacy of those who came before him, gave their blood, sweat, and tears to make it possible for him to live a life of freedom and liberation. He is saddened by the fact that it appears the current generation has little knowledge of and doesn’t seem to know or speak of Family History, especially Black History. Through his writing, he hopes to educate others more about the historical significance of the challenges African Americans face as well as the contribution of African Americans throughout history including those events which are rarely discussed or taught in public schools, such as African American roles in the Civil War. He hopes to shed more light on the strength of Black People throughout history.
Although his writing passion is focused a great deal on his own African American Culture Anthony Arnold has a deep love for all mankind that grew during his service to his country. Anthony Arnold has proudly retired from service in the US Air Force. He was awarded numerous medals during his career, including Air Force Achievement Medal-1986, 1993, and 2001 and many more.
Through poetic expression, this book is the beginning of fulfilling his desire to share knowledge with the younger generation with more about their ancestors and culture; letting them know they are much more than what some in society have labeled them.

2024 Release! The Land Of Now And Then: A Magic Islands by Irene Edwards.
Book 3 of 3: Magic Islands.
‘The Land Of Now And Then’ is book 3 in the ‘Magic Islands’ series.
Step into the wonderful world of the ‘Magic Islands’ for the third time, as the magical, mystical, educational series continues…
Still too much of a handful, even when captive, the naughty Purple Wizards are once again exiled for their environmental crimes – this time to a mythical land which shouldn’t exist, a land of extinct animals and ancient fictional beasts. A land where time has suddenly stood still, caused by the same lunar eclipse which brought them there…
Wizard Ambrosious needs help to start time up again – or half the Land of Now and Then will be in perpetual darkness, the other half perpetual light, and nothing will grow or thrive. He again needs the help of a particular group of schoolchildren, from a particular school in White Stone Town, Wales…
So, Stefan and Megan, this time with their friend Trevor, are called on once more to save the Magic Islands from climate catastrophe, by helping to find a missing magical Box of Secrets and its Golden Key. Their investigation will introduce them to a host of long-extinct animals of Planet Earth: a Gigantopithecus, a Dodo, a Parasaulophus, and the inhabitants – both terrifying and friendly – of fearsome Dinosaur Country. Join them as both they and the Purple Wizards learn all about these real and legendary creatures, finding friendship and purpose along the way – and perhaps saving the Land of Now and Then from its inevitable end…
A fun and exciting magical adventure for 8-12-year-olds, with an important environmental message…
Review by Réal Laplaine: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. An entertaining and educational story for children. Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2024. Verified Purchase. The Land of Now and Then, Book 3 in The Magic Islands children’s fantasy and adventure series, is just that – a magical adventure, where a group of children find themselves inexplicably transported to a land where creatures, both fantastical and either extinct or nearly so, have been saved from extinction and are protected by a powerful wizard. In their encounters, and their mission, they, and the reader, learn about these creatures; about dinosaurs which once roamed the Earth in abundance, now only a handful remain on the Magic Island. In addition to being an imaginative adventure, the book teaches a lesson about life, about the value of all creatures large or small, about the importance of maintaining an eco-system where the balance of the world is not disrupted to the detriment of any living thing. I recommend this book for children as both entertaining and educational – raising awareness on an important issue in our times – protecting the balance of life.

(they all kept alive there by the wizard Ambrosious).Three friends, Megan, Stefan and Trevor are once more being transported into the magical world of The Land of Now and Then to help the creatures to get their clock running again, so the darkness, that was creeping into their land, will stop and they can go on living. Very well written and I enjoyed reading it.
Review by James Stokes. 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 7, 2024. Verified Purchase. Magic Islands is a well written story which will captivate and immerse children in the story’s magical elements. At the same time they will become aware of the serious message portrayed by the book. Our world is a fragile environment which needs to be cared for in an appropriate manner. Human beings are the stewards of this planet who need to take this responsibility seriously. As a teacher for nearly forty years Irene Edwards book is a must read for older primary school pupils.
Review by Amazon Customer: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Great children’s book. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 7, 2024. Verified Purchase. The third in the series of Magic Island books, again touches on themes of the environmental issues. This time set in the mythical land of now and then ,with some familiar characters from the previous two books. This was a joy to read from beginning to end, and perhaps the best of the three novels. Suitable bed time reading for any children, it’s sure to fire their imagination within the world of Magic Islands.

Chaos In The Cosmos: A Magic Islands Story by Irene Edwards.
Book 2 of 3: Magic Islands.
The second instalment in the fun and exciting Magic Islands fantasy-adventure series for younger children picks up where A Spooky Wish left off – and an even more important environmental message.
Far off the coast of Wales are the mysterious, legendary Magic Islands. Once hidden and inaccessible by the treacherous seas surrounding them, the curse of the Hook-Eyed Cyclops Monsters has now been lifted by Ambrosious, Wizard of the Magic Forest. Now Cyclops leader Domadron is worried that people will come; they will bring their pollution and ruin the beautiful seas he calls home.
But an even bigger threat is brewing, out in the cosmos!
For, exiled into space for their wicked deeds on the Magic Islands, the evil Purple Wizards, and their boss Izzy Odorous are up to their usual evil scheming. And this time their actions threaten the whole of Planet Earth! Because, in their vengeance against Ambrosious and his friends Megan and Stefan, they’ve ended up creating an environmental catastrophe! Can enemies and friends alike put differences aside to stop them?
Chaos in the Cosmos is a fantasy narrative for children aged between 8 to 12 years.
5 Stars: Fun, Educational Action Adventure For Kids 8-12!
Chaos In The Cosmos (Magic Island Story) is book two in the Magic Island series. In this wonderful learning adventure, Author Irene Edwards uses the fun and games of the Purple Wizard to bring children back to the Magic Islands. As we learned in book one Magic Island, somewhere along the coast of Wales, there once existed a small group of islands. They were mysterious islands, often believed to be magical islands.
Your child will enjoy the familiar characters Stefan and Megan, if he or she has read Magic Islands. Some of the chapter titles include Hook Eyed Monsters, The Spacecraft, Landing on Mars, Morning on the Red Planet, Volcano Olympus Mons, Let’s Explore the Underworld, Domadron, and the Cyclops, The Golden Puddle, Merlin’s Cave, The Red Wizards Tower, A Hiding Place, and Believe It or Not to name a few.
The Story Begins:” The story begins when the “Magic” happens, and the Purple Wizards are sent spinning from the Magic Islands to the Red Planet, Mars, where they experience a Space adventure on the mystic planet and its hidden Underworld.
…In order to escape from the Underworld and from Planet Mars, Izzy Odorous and his gang of Purple Wizards are faced with having to regain their own powerful magical strengths. With newly regained powers, they mischievously venture out on a magical mystery tour and later threaten danger to the well-being of the entire Planet Earth.
…Scratchit is the much feared, adorable, baby Hook-Eyed Cyclops Monster, who creates havoc by way of his very own busy magical mischief, as he whisks the children, Stefan, and Megan, on a terrifying journey to the Magic Islands.
…But when the children are confronted with the impending perils of global warming, they are also faced with having to help the magical inhabitants of the Magic Islands in their fight for survival during a rapidly changing climatic crisis.
Let me bring you into the story here:
… “Cheer up, Megan. Let’s get away from these sand dunes and shelter somewhere cool, such as the caves,” Stefan said briskly.
…How could she feel cheerful? She stood up and trailed after Stefan as he headed for the caves at the Land of Rocks.
… “Do you think the caves will be a safe place for us?” Megan frowned. “They can’t be. Some of the rocks on the coast are tumbling into the sea?”
… “Perhaps they may be safe enough, but I’m not really sure. At least the caves will offer shelter from the sun. I feel so cross with Scratchit today. The silly little Cyclops has brought us here and dumped us on these islands,” Stefan mumbled in annoyance.
… “But, I’m seriously worried, Stefan.” Megan sighed in despair, “What if…we really are alone on these Magic Islands, and there is no one here, to help magic us back to Wales? What if…there is no food for us to eat… or fresh water to drink, and we dehydrate?
…What if…the Magic Islands flood over?
…What if…?”
My Thoughts: Author Irene Edwards teaches children about planet earth and the cosmos in this fun, adventurous, action-adventure, using words and beautiful hand-drawn illustrations.
Children eight to twelve will enjoy reading with an adult or alone. This book will make a great gift, bed-time story, library book, or a summer reading adventure.
The author’s desire to educate children and adults about the preservation of our planet shines through in her books. Irene provides educational guides, free worksheets for classroom and group discussions. (cgofwales.co.uk)

Review by Gigi Sedlmayer, Book Excellence Award Finalist winning author of the Talon series. 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Believe it or not, you only have to say: “Fuzzy-Pickles! Wiggly-Jiggly! Itty-Bitty-Magic-Bits” and all you want is happening. Or is it? A wonderful story, not only for the young. Magic Island, Purple and red Wizards, Hook-Eyed Cyclops Monsters. And Steven and Megan, who was magically wished away from their school outing visiting Merlin’s Cave, by the baby Scratch it. But that is not all. You have to get the book to get the full story. Wonderfully written, easy to read. Great for children. Hi prices for it. I have started with the second book, but now I have to get the first and will see, how all started.
Centuries ago, there were a group of mysterious, some say magical islands, which fell victim to a monsters’ curse, making them unreachable by sea. The islands were all but forgotten.
But now a group of wicked, exiled Purple Wizards, led by the horrid Izzy Odorous, have found their way to the Magic Islands, and immediately make their evil plans to rule it and its people.
Meanwhile, on a beach in Wales, two friends on a school project have found some very strange items, including a Book of Spells and a magic shell. Wishing they could learn where the items came from, Megan and Stefan are suddenly themselves whisked away to the Magic Islands, where they meet a collection of bizarre characters, including a silly jester, a pair of mean witches, a friendly dragon, a kidnapped king and a powerful, ancient magician. Soon they are all joining forces to stop the Purple Wizards’ wicked plan and lift the islands’ curse forever – and hopefully get the children back home!
A fun and exciting magical adventure for 8-12-year-olds, with an important environmental message.
5 Stars: Magical Read For Children 8-12 Years!
Prologue: Magic Islands (Book One):“Somewhere along the coast of Wales, there once existed a small group of islands. They were mysterious islands, often believed to be magical islands. Some were mountainous and craggy, others only undulated from high to low levels, from hillside to valley.
…The islands had few visitors, for the journeys across the seas to these islands were often treacherous, the seas around them being moody and the pathways unclear.
…It is said many ships had vanished in the rough waters and never returned home to Wales. When ships returned homewards, their sailors refrained from venturing again to the islands for they feared the mighty waves and great anger of the choppy seas.
…Ancient mariners often returned telling mystical and magical tales of having spied from a distance a curious clan of magical dwellers on the islands.
…But there was never any proof of such tales.
…As time went by the islands faded and vanished and the tales of the magical islands were soon forgotten, seemingly forever…”
Forgotten until now! Author Irene Edward unlocks the mysteries of these fictitious Islands.
Let me quote from Part 11- ‘A Call for Help’:
… “Come on, Megan, let’s become invisible.”
… “This Magical Enchanted Forest is the strangest of places,” Megan glanced through the trees as she spoke. Hundreds of cuckoos called out their cuckoo songs tunefully. The woodpeckers were hammering at branches with their sharp beaks.”
…” Rata-tat! Rata-tat! Rata-tat!”
…Above the children’s heads, hawks and eagles squawked eerily. But although the forest was oddly noisy, the children became alarmed by the trees, for they were not standing still and rooted, but were moving around in the forest, hovering and swaying, pushing, and shoving, falling, or rushing around in all directions.”
… “It would help us if the trees stayed in one place,” Stefan said nervously. “How on earth can we keep away from the paths, when the paths keep moving around everywhere?”
My Thoughts: This is a fun read, where character Stefan and Megan make a wish on a Conch shell found on the Welsh coastline. Transported to the ‘Magic Islands’ by their wish, the story-line and beautiful hand-drawn illustrations come to life on the pages.
Never a dull moment as wizards, witches, elves, dragons, castles, and a magical enchanted forest fills the readers imagination.
(https://cgofwales.co.uk)
