Finding Billy Battles by Ronald E. Yates.

Finding Billy Battles Trilogy Book 1.

When a great-grandson inherits two aging trunks and a stack of meticulously detailed journals penned by his great-grandfather, he sets out to fulfill his great-grandfather’s last request: to tell the story of an incredible life replete with adventure, violence, and tragedy. The great-grandfather’s name is Billy Battles–a man often trapped and overwhelmed by circumstances beyond his control.

For much of his 100-year-long life Billy is a man missing and largely unknown to his descendants. His great-grandson is about to change that. As he works his way through the aging journals and the other possessions he finds in the battered trunks he uncovers the truth about his mysterious great-grandfather–a man whose deeds and misdeeds propelled him on an extraordinary and perilous journey from the untamed American West to the inscrutable Far East, Latin America and Europe.

As he flips through the pages of the handwritten journals he learns of Billy’s surprising connections to the Spanish-American War, French Indochina, and revolutions in Mexico and other Latin American countries. But most of all he learns that in finding Billy Battles he has also found a long lost and astonishing link to the past.

The Improbable Journeys Of Billy Battles by Ronald E. Yates.

Finding Billy Battles Trilogy Book 2.

Billy Battles is definitely not in Kansas anymore.

As Book 2 of the Finding Billy Battles trilogy opens, Billy is far from his Kansas roots and his improbable journeys are just starting.

The year is 1894 and Billy is aboard the S S China sailing to the inscrutable Far East. Trouble is not far behind. He has met a mysterious and possibly dangerous German Baroness. He has locked horns with malevolent agents of the German government and battled ferocious Chinese and Malay pirates in the South China Sea.

Later, he is embroiled in the bloody anti-French insurgency in Indochina–which quite possibly makes him the first American combatant in a country that eventually will become Vietnam. Then, in the Philippines, he is thrust into the Spanish-American War and the brutal anti-American insurgency that follows. But Billy’s troubles are only beginning.

As the 19th century ends and the 20th century begins, he finds himself entangled with political opportunists, spies, revolutionaries, and an assortment of vindictive and dubious characters of both sexes. How will Billy handle those people and the challenges they present? The answers are just ahead.

‘The Improbable Journeys of Billy Battles’ is the sequel to Finding Billy Battles. I jumped right into this book without reading the first in this trilogy and found it to be a compelling story based on fact and expanded by narrative fiction.

Ted Sayles who is the great-grandson of Billy Battles inherits Billy’s journals and while writing this trilogy he stays very true to the language of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. While this book opens in 1894 with William (Billy) Battles heading for the Orient aboard the SS China it covers his time in the Far East, Latin America, and Europe.

It is aboard the SS China that Billy meets German Baroness Katharina von Schreiber. She is gorgeous and regal, far out of reach of a Kansas scribbler (journalist). Since you have probably read the book’s description, I wrestle with what to share with you from this amazing story and journey that Billy Battles is about to embark on. I have decided to quote this passage to whet your appetite. I quote:

…“Katharina’s cabin was a bit larger than mine was, and like mine, its walls were covered with dark mahogany panels. In addition to the two overstuffed chairs and writing table, she also had a small dining table. That is where we settled, she on one side and me on the other.

…“I’m sorry, I have nothing to offer you to drink.” Then she paused, stood up, and walked to her wardrobe where she produced a tear-shaped bottle of Glenglassaugh single malt Scotch whiskey and two heavy cut crystal glasses. “Except for this.”

…She returned and placed the glasses on the table in front of us. “May I?” she asked, and then uncorking the bottle, she poured two fingers in each glass. “This was my late husband’s favorite.”

…I shuddered imperceptibly at that remark but pulled the glass toward me anyway. Images of Katharina pushing Baron von Schreiber over a cliff or poisoning him with arsenic-laced Wiener schnitzel flooded my mind.

…I forced those macabre thoughts out of my mind by focusing on the rich amber hue of the whiskey as I uneasily swirled the glass around and around in front of me.

…What was I doing? I found myself thinking. Why was I in Katharina Schreiber’s cabin about to drink expensive single malt Scotch whiskey with a woman who had just admitted she had killed, but not murdered, her husband?”

Murder, mystery, intrigue, people, places and events that were intended to divert Billy’s attention from his past soon gets him embroiled in Katharina’s past, with the German government, not to mention Chinese and Malay pirates. Later on, he finds himself perhaps the first American to be involved in the Anti-French insurgency in Indochina which will later be called Vietnam and involve America. War will not end there as he is forced into the Spanish-American War while in the Philippines.

Just as life takes many unexpected turns for Billy Battles so will your desire to keep turning the pages of this book to find out what is it about Billy Battles that causes him to try to escape his past, endure his new reality and find measured peace as he heads into the twilight of his life.

I invite you to read ‘The Improbable Journeys of Billy Battles’ as it is a journey worth your time. Be sure to read ‘Finding Billy Battles’ (book one in this trilogy) while waiting for the author to write the final book in this amazing trilogy.

Author Ronald E. Yates life experience as a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune in Japan, China, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America gives him the authority with which he writes. It is important to point out he won “three Pulitzer Prize nominations and several other awards, including the Peter Lisagor Award from the Society of Professional Journalists; The Inter-American Press Association Award for coverage of South America; and three Edward Scott Beck Awards for international reporting. He is a graduate of the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas. He lives in Murrieta, California.”

I really enjoyed ‘The Improbable Journeys of Billy Battles’ (Trilogy Book Two) by Ronald E. Yates. Ronald E. Yates is the author of the ‘Finding Billy Battles’ (book one in this trilogy) and ‘The Kikkoman Chronicles’: A Global Company with A Japanese Soul, Aboard The Tokyo Express: A Foreign Correspondent’s Journey Through Japan as well as three journalism textbooks: The Journalist’s Handbook, International Reporting and Foreign Correspondents, and Business and Financial Reporting in a global Economy.

The Lost Years Of Billy Battles by Ronald E. Yates.

Finding Billy Battles Trilogy Book 3.

Where in the world is Billy Battles?

As Book Three of the Finding Billy Battles trilogy begins, we know where Billy is. He is in Chicago with his wife, the former Baroness Katharina von Schreiber living a sedate and comfortable life after years of adventure and tragedy. That changes with a single telephone call that yanks Billy and Katharina back into a life of havoc and peril.

Persuaded by a powerful old friend to go undercover for the U.S. government the two find themselves in Mexico during the height of the violent 1910-1920 revolution. There they encounter assorted German spies, Mexican revolutionaries, devious political operatives, and other malefactors. Caught in the middle of the 1914 American invasion of Veracruz, they must find a way out while keeping their real identities secret.

Later on, disaster strikes. It is a tragedy Billy is all too familiar with and one that will send him plummeting into a chasm of despair and agony. Then, Billy vanishes leaving family and friends to wonder what happened to him. Where is he? Is he dead or alive? What provoked his disappearance?

In Book 3 of the Finding Billy Battles Trilogy, those questions are answered, and the mystery behind Billy’s disappearance is ultimately revealed.

Book Endorsement and 5 Stars From Book Marketing Global Network!

Awarded 5 Stars By The Editor At Book Marketing Global Network. Remarkable Job Producing This Trilogy!

Saying goodbye to an old friend is always hard and that is how I feel as the ‘Finding Billy Battles Trilogy’ comes to a close with book three titled ‘The Lost Years of Billy Battles’.  The fictional Ted Sayles has done a remarkable job reading and producing this trilogy from more than a dozen journals written by his great grandfather Billy Battles. It is the historical significance woven skillfully within the element of fiction that makes this trilogy a must read for history buffs and fans of action and adventure novels.

After years of travel, relationships with foreign governments, wars of American making and wars forced upon us, not to mention the Chinese and Malay pirates; Billy and Katharina finally enjoy a few peaceful years where Billy is an editor for the Chicago Record-Herald and Katharina a successful author. It is inevitable that this serene period wouldn’t last forever. One phone call to go undercover will find them “caught in the middle of the 1914 American invasion of Veracruz”.

Just when danger subsides, I found myself holding my breath when the unthinkable happens. “Katharina wasn’t the one the five men were after. It was me. But when they couldn’t find me, they decided to take Katharina to use as bait. That was the first revelation. Next was who the men were. The man who had dragged Katharina out of the house was Mason Bledsoe, son of Nate Bledsoe, the man I had killed in 1889 on my family’s homestead in Western Kansas. When I heard the name, my knees buckled and my heart raced for a moment.” It was the ransom note that made Billy’s heart sink.

Of all the dangers Billy and Katharina had been exposed to in their life together, how will this one match up? When Billy is nowhere to be found, what reason will be uncovered? How will Billy Battle close the final chapter in his journal? Will Ted Sayles effort to canonize the legacy of his Great Grandfather Billy Battle live on for future generations?

There is no doubt in my mind that Author Ronald E. Yates’ extensive historical research, skilled character development and impeccable story telling has brought the reader to a successful conclusion in this thought-provoking trilogy. I invite you to read the entire “Finding Billy Battles Trilogy” as it portrays, as much a glimpse into history, as it does into one man’s life.

I love ‘The Lost Years Of Billy Battles’ (‘Finding Billy Battles’ Trilogy Book 3) by Ronald Yates as a final testimony to the life and times of Billy Battle.

My Life At Sweetbrier (A Life Changed By Horses) by Deanie Humphrys-Dunne.

Awarded 5 Stars By The Editor At Book Marketing Global Network. For The Love Of A Horse, Family Bonds and A Father’s Promise To His Little Girl!

My Life At Sweetbrier (A Life Changed By Horses) by Deanie Humphrys-Dunne is a not only a well written memoir, but an inspirational journey that continues today. This journey begins when Deanie is two years old and diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The specialist told Deanie’s parents that she will not be able to walk and participate in activities that other children enjoy. Her family, especially her father, with grit and determination created ‘Sweetbrier Riding School’. Sweetbrier took young Deanie’s love for horses and gave her the skills, knowledge, disciple and ability to make it into the winner’s circle.

Let me bring you into Deanie’s story here:My first riding adventure happened when I was five-year-old. Why did my heart pound when Daddy led me around the riding ring on the freckled grey pony, Little Man, for the first time ever? I plodded around, listening to the steady clip-clop of Little Man’s hooves hit the sandy soil of theriding ring. My legs wobbled, sliding from side to side. Isn’t it amazing I didn’t fall off? Daddy led me around while he rode another horse because my arms weren’t strong enough to steer Little Man myself. Sometimes when I rode along on Little Man my legs got so tired I slid off. Yikes! Without warning, I sat in the dirt looking up at Little Man. I wasn’t hurt but disappointed I fell off for no reason. What happened next? Could I give up? That was never an option. The family motto was, “The Humphrys don’t give up.” Daddy picked me up, gave me a kiss, and lifted me back on. How could I figure out the magic formula for staying on? It was much more fun than sitting in the dirt without my pony.”

Deanie never gave up through all life’s challenges, her surgery and horse shows that brought her into the winner’s circle. The photos included in this book will carry you into her world. There is a quiz at the end with answers, that reinforce this amazing true story.

As an adult, Deanie Humphrys-Dunne became an award-winning children’s author. The stories and illustrations in her eight books will delight and inspire beginner readers all the way up through the teen years. I encourage you to purchase Deanie’s books, give them as gifts, and even donate them to libraries, medical facility waiting rooms and places where kids and parents gather.

Press Release For ‘Assimilation’ (An Axe of Iron Novel) by J. A. Hunsinger

BOOK BANNER FOR 'ASSIMILATION' BY J. A. HUNSINGER

Assimilation: An Axe of Iron Novel by J. A. Hunsinger.

Third Book In An Axe of Iron Series.

Awarded 5 Stars By The Editor At Book Marketing Global Network. Assimilation is the final novel in the Axe of Iron series by J. A. Hunsinger. The author asks that you read or reread the ‘Historical Perspective’ that is located in ‘The Settlers’ which is the first volume in this series. The author’s research into the historical time frame and authentic pre-historical Indian names is irrefutable. The ‘Historical Perspective’ goes into the whole concept of the Norse sagas. Even though each book stands alone, as a reader who has enjoyed the entire series, I encourage you to purchase all three books.

As the author states in his book’s description, the first two books in this series (The Settlers and Confrontation) “dealt with the plight of the Greenland Viking settlers”.

Assimilation begins with a map showing where the settlements are and opens with two Naskapi warriors hidden from view, surveying the river valley below. The saga continues with descriptive writing that puts you the reader on the ground experiencing the mysteries of the Viking period. Smell the earth and lush dense forests, travel the routes carved out of the land by natives and take up residence in the villages and experience the hardships of this pre-historical land that we now call the Hudson Bay and the Great Lakes of Canada and the US.

…Eavesdrop on Nipishish and Ingerd as they lay in each other’s arms, engaged in whispered conversation like couples do.

…Join warriors in their canoes as they glide in the chill of pre-dawn morning heading toward the Haudenosaunee Village.

…Stand at the rail of a Viking ship called Steed of the Sea and feel the motion of the sea as the ship heads towards a distant beach.

…After the storm, the Norse society dries out and attends to the damage that Njord and Thor (the gods of weather) have forced upon them. Catch a glimpse of the smoke that curls into the calm skies over the cook fires where fish, meat and stew aroma awaits the barley bread and other leftovers that will nourish the community and reward the daily chores.

…Reconnect with the characters that you have come to know like Halfdan, his dog Fang, Tostig, and experience the council meetings where men discuss their destiny, when in reality it is the gods like the “mighty Thor” who have the final say.

…Strong women who cook and weave on looms by the light of seal oil lamps, teach their girls to spin fibers of wool into skeins of thread, care for the children and their men with tenderness in a world where both beauty and harshness intertwine. Communities where communication and yes even gossip are the norm, and where the outsider might find rest if assimilation is acquired.

…Drumbeats of war are as common as the moon rising over the snow, so too are the tracks of snowshoes where the trappers are as important as the warriors for a civilization that exists within a fine balance between preservation and extinction. Here is a quote: “Nipishish, Kejo, and Lothar returned to their village as quickly as possible after the parley with Nesatin. Word spread faster than normal through the Nitassinan that the Anishinabeg had rejected Sachem’s peace offering regarding the people of Haldansfjord.”

I invite you to read Assimilation and discover for yourself where the legend of the Death Wind came from and what it meant for the earliest American colonies. Enjoy the detailed glossary at the end of this book which will help you understand the authentic names and terms used in this book series.

Let me take this moment to thank Author J. A. Hunsinger for his time, research and engaging storytelling that has made An Axe of Iron series possible. I sincerely hope that he will continue to write as some storytellers have one story to tell, others have infinite stories that need to be told and preserved for generations to come. The Axe of Iron novels are one of those series that time will not forget.

Assimilation: An Axe of Iron Novel by J. A. Hunsinger is book three in the fictional historical accounting of exploration and settlement of Vinland (North America).

Press Release For ‘The Settlers’ (An Axe of Iron Novel) by J. A. Hunsinger

BOOK BANNER FOR 'THE SETTLERS' BY J. A. HUNSINGER

The Settlers: An Axe of Iron Novel by J. A. Hunsinger.

First Book In An Axe Of Iron Series.

Awarded 5 Stars By The Editor At Book Marketing Global Network. The Viking ship called ‘Steed of the Sea’ sailing in the cold dark waters in the foreground of tall glaciers under a foreboding sky on the cover is just the beginning.

Whether you sat under the history lessons of Columbus discovering America or are more adventurous in your approach to history and have a yearning to know who was here when Columbus arrived and where did they come from, ‘The Settlers’ is a tale that should be on a mandatory reading list in all schools in order to provoke thought and discussion on native North America in the latter half of the tenth century. Scholars can’t agree but this tale offers a new perspective about America’s indigenous people, how they viewed explorers, handled settlers and coexisted on a bountiful body of land with all its beauty and treacherous environment.

It is important to read the ‘Author’s Note’, ‘Historical Perspective’ and the ‘Glossary Of Norse Terms’ provided by the author to educate the reader. In the Author’s Note you will meet Gudbjartur Einarsson who is an Icelander, a Northman or Norseman who is second in command under Halfdan Ingolfsson. Chapter one unfolds six wooden ships carrying 163 Greenlanders and 152 Icelanders (including men, women and children) set sail with horses, cows, pigs, chickens, dogs, cats, equipment (tents and parts to horse drawn carts) and supplies to explore areas of what they call Vinland (North America).

Exhaustive research, realistic characters garbed in functional layers residing in a true to life story line that allows the reader to experience the sea voyage and land exploration with exquisite writing that creates a sense of being present in the story even when this first book in ‘An Axe Of Iron Novel’ series has been closed on a night stand.

Here’s a few of my favorite quotes from the book:

“He whistled tunelessly to himself, the notes blown away on the wind. His eyes darted over the sea ahead and aloft at the trim of the sail and rigging. The heart of the ship pulsed through the soles of his feet, vibrated up through the steering oar and the palms of his hands, an inaudible hum that told him all was well in his world.”

“Wind driven rain stung exposed skin like bees protecting their hive.”

“Several kettles of whale blubber boiled over individual fires on the beach to render the valuable oil. The thick, rich oil skimmed of the connective tissue – the crunchy fried meat and curled pieces of skin were a delicacy-had many uses. It was a valuable food source, preservative, and lamp fuel.”

…After the journey across treacherous seas land was a welcome sight with all of its wild game like “Grunting herds of Reindeer” not to mention the predators like wolves and bears. Women and children scour rocky cliffs for seabird eggs to add to their food supply giving the kids some stress relieving egg throwing activity.

…Unforeseen and inevitable injuries, herbal treatments, Viking burial ceremony amidst deep held Christian beliefs.

…Attraction and a “bed of soft, furry skins nestled in the scrub brush, well protected from the north wind’. Passion, “eyes smoldered with lust” hands explore, tongues probe, “locked bodies swayed in the throes of passion”.

…Hunting and cooking for survival, sewing for protective covering, animal pelts and jewelry making for trade commodity. The best and the worst of human nature revealed in a hostile new world.

…Now heading into the reading of ‘Confrontation: An Axe Of Iron Novel’ book two of the series gives clarity as to the sequence of history, characters and events that readers should follow in order to understand and digest the fiction history which is laid out in great detail, humanity and historical correlation regarding much debated events.

…The Settlers – An Axe of Iron Novel book one is the fictional historical accounting of exploration and settlement of Vinland (North America).

Press Release For ‘Confrontation’ (An Axe of Iron Novel) by J.A. Hunsinger

BOOK BANNER FOR 'CONFRONTATION' BY J. A. HUNSINGER

Confrontation: An Axe of Iron Novel by J.A. Hunsinger.

Second Book In An Axe of Iron Series.

Awarded 5 Stars By The Editor At Book Marketing Global Network. This character driven, action packed historical fiction saga continues from ‘The Settlers: An Axe Of Iron Novel’ where 163 Greenlanders and 152 Icelanders (including men, women and children) set sail with horses, cows, pigs, chickens, dogs, cats, equipment (tents and parts to horse drawn carts) and supplies to explore areas of what they call Vinland (North America).

Confrontation – An Axe Of Iron Novel cover with the Viking battle axe reflecting warriors gives us the first clue regarding the brutal facts of survival and desperate measures taken by men to protect their women, children and settlement with blood sweat and tears. Author J. A. Hunsinger has provided an in-depth ‘Glossary of Norse Terms’ and ‘Native Terms’ to help readers understand the people and culture.

…Settling into a new land will prove challenging when the indigenous tribes who have a distaste for any fair skinned men due to those who cheated them in trade, abused them and killed their tribesmen in the past. Apart from expected interaction with the variety of native cultures, life in the new settlement is forced into daily and seasonal routines out of necessity.

…Halfdan Ingolfsson and Gudbjartur Einarsson (his second in command) walk the settlement commons overseeing the duties pertaining to survival like the grueling process of filling the Kiln (furnace) with dry birch wood, burning the wood until only charcoal is left and then storing this precious commodity under the shed roof to be used for heat and cooking during the harsh winter months.

…Children in the settlement (especially the boys) had to earn their place in their family and settlement by moving from boyhood into manhood by demonstrating skills taught and mirrored to them by their fathers, brothers, cousins and other men around them. Skills like hunting which was the core of survival. Unfortunately, dangers exist when dealing with wild animals like a Bull Moose protecting his territory, cow and calf. Death can be mercifully quick and brutal. The burial ceremony, reverence for even the youngest hunter/warrior, tradition and spirituality (Gods Will) play a role for the dead and those who remain.

…Seasons marked by the moon predict work, trade, play, marriage and birth. I quote Bjorn “as a pleasant smile curved his lips”. “Yes, it is time I thought of a mate. Another long winter comes and company in my bed would be welcome. Perhaps this is the one (as he recalls the tall blonde woman)”.

…Confrontation is inevitable, warriors’ attack, prisoners taken, injuries sustained, spoils of battles and questions about their ability to live in peace brings us to the anticipation of the third book in An Axe Of Iron Series titled “Assimilation”.

J. A. Hunsinger’s series ‘An Axe Of Iron’ has been exhaustively researched and parallel the actually events as close as a historical fiction can. I recommend this series to both men and women and suggest that the series be placed on a high school/college reading list.

This reviewer is looking forward to ‘Assimilation – An Axe Of Iron Novel’ which is the third book in the series.

Confrontation: An Axe of Iron Novel by J. A. Hunsinger’s book two is the fictional historical accounting of exploration and settlement of Vinland (North America).

Bounty Hunter Nate Landry: Major Issues by Mark L. Redmond.

Book 1: Bounty Hunter Nate Landry.

The stereotypical bounty hunter in tales of the old West is an unprincipled, dirty, back-shooter, who is only motivated by the reward money he collects. Nate Landry and his best friend Wolf are a different breed of bounty hunter. They witnessed too much killing during the Civil War; consequently, they try to subdue the outlaws they’re after by using their brains instead of their bullets. But when Anna Thomas asks Nate to rescue her kidnapped son and see that the kidnappers are punished, he and Wolf find themselves chasing an enemy from their past. This man is so evil that killing him may be their only option–if he doesn’t kill them first. If you like adventure, humor, and the old West, saddle up and get ready to ride!

Awarded 5 Stars by Editor at Book Marketing Global Network. The Language Of A Six-Shooter!

Author Mark L. Redmond is a western action-adventure writer, who takes his readers back to the old wild west in 1877, where campfire coffee is strong and everyone knows the language of a six-shooter.

Chapter One of Bounty Hunter Nate Landry: Major Issues opens in Florence, Arizona, when Bounty Hunter Nate Landry returns home to find Anna Thomas waiting in his cabin with her pistol aimed straight at him. Anna is a mother on a mission to recover her kidnapped son Daniel.

The adventure unfolds as Nate and his trusted companion Wolf, accompanied by Anna, begin their search for Daniel Thomas.

Here is a quote from Chapter Six, as Nate, Wolf, and Anna go in search of bad man Major Campbell.

…We rode in silence for nearly an hour, letting the horses run awhile in the coolness of the morning. I was praying and watching. One of the things that made Campbell so dangerous was the fact that he was unpredictable. He had often succeeded in defeating the rebs by making moves that no other officer would have considered. He had never cared about sacrificing the lives of his men. Most of the time, the insanity of his tactics had protected his soldiers. He had favored the element of surprise, and he had known how to make it work in his favor. I reckoned Campbell hadn’t changed.

…I considered the matter of what to tell Anna about Campbell and how we had met David. We had no idea of what she already knew about this devil who had murdered her husband and stolen her son. And then she told us. “We named him after you,” Anna said.

…I looked at her, but she stared straight ahead. “Daniel Nathan Thomas,” she said. “David wanted to name our son after you. He said you and Wolf had saved his life. He was wounded and came home a year before the war ended.

…He told me about what happened to the other men who were captured with him. He always believed that God had spared him so that he could take care of me—”

…Anna began to cry softly.

… “I’d like to kill Campbell very slowly,” Wolf said.

… “I reckon he’d do the same to us if he got the chance,” I said.

… “If and when he finds out who we are,” Wolf said, “he’ll come after us. We have the edge right now because we know who he is. All he knows about us is that we’re two riders escorting Mrs. Thomas.”

If you need a change of pace, miss the old, wholesome western stories, and appreciate mid-western Christian values, Bounty Hunter Nate Landry: Major Issues should be your next read. Author Mark L. Redmond has two western books for “grownups” and six westerns in his Adventures of Arty Anderson series, geared for middle grade readers.

Children’s 1800s US Historical Fiction.

The Box M Gang Series!
Intended For Middle Grade+ Readers!

Book One In ‘The Box M Gang’ Series.

The year is 1875. The Arizona Territory is a wild, sparsely settled place. The Martin family’s Box M Ranch is ten miles from their nearest neighbor and twenty miles from Tucson. Ma has been gone for two years, and Pa hasn’t been the same since she passed. Something inside him broke when he lost her. Fifteen-year-old Ruth, fourteen-year-old Thad, twelve-year-old Sarah, ten-year-old Bart, and eight-year-old Billy have been doing most of the work to keep the Box M running. Consequently, when Pa passes away, the Martin siblings face little change in their daily routine as far as their chores go.

They do, however, face an ominous threat. Ruth, Thad, and Sarah know they can continue to run the Box M without Pa. They also know if folks discover Pa has passed away, the local lawman will load the Martin siblings into a buckboard and haul them off to the orphanage near Tucson. Ruth is confident she, Thad, and Sarah can protect their secret from the occasional travelers who visit the Box M, but she’s concerned about Bart and Billy. They need to practice their conversations with each other to prepare for talking with strangers. They need to pray for God’s help as they tackle a nearly impossible task. They need to work together. They need to become the Box M Gang.

During the next few months, visitors to the Box M include the sheriff, a bounty hunter, cattle rustlers, and a family with five small children. Some of the visitors stay long enough to rest and water their livestock. Some spend the night and move on the next day. Others overstay their welcome. All of them pose a threat to the Martins.

Can they keep their secret and remain on the Box M? Saddle up, and let’s find out!

Fifteen-year-old Ruth Martin is the oldest of the five Martin children. Her bravery, love for her siblings, her faith, and her leadership take “The Box M Gang” on a path to secure their future together and save their ranch. It can’t be easy for 5 kids to keep the biggest secret of their lives, and yet their very survival will rely on their promise to each other.

As an adult and grandparent, I bonded with these kids on the first page. I held my breath as I imagined the wild, sparsely settled Arizona Territory in 1875. The Martin family’s ranch is ten miles from their nearest neighbor and twenty miles from Tucson. The dangers to the children and their ranch animals are compounded by thieves, cattle rustlers, squatters, outlaws, the local sheriff and a possible murderer in the area.

Let me bring you into their story here. This is the morning after the kids have made their secret pact. I quote:

…The next morning, as usual, we left the house just after sunrise, ready to begin our daily chores. I saddled our bay mare so I could ride out to check on our livestock. I led the mare from the stable and paused to look around me. Sarah was scrubbing our clothes in a wooden tub. Bart was milking the cow.  Billy was gathering eggs in the chicken pen. Thad was replacing a broken post in the corral fence. Everything looked the way it should on the Box M Ranch.

…I smiled as I mounted the horse and started her toward the pasture. The sun was shining; the morning air was cool and fresh. The day would be beautiful. I had just started to hum an old hymn when I spotted the buzzards.

…Now, I know that buzzards have a purpose, just like most of God’s creatures. Ma had told me one time that if buzzards didn’t clean up dead animals, the whole world would stink. I believed her, but I still felt a little sick whenever I saw those nasty birds circling over something dead or dying.

…These buzzards were already flying low, and they were dropping rapidly. When I realized they had to be flying over our pasture, I nudged the mare to a gallop. As I approached the pasture, I slowed her to a walk, rode to the gate, and reached down to let myself in.

I invite you to join Ruth as she makes a startling discovery.

The secret is safe with fifteen-year-old Ruth, fourteen-year-old Thad, and twelve-year-old Sarah; but can ten-year-old Bart and eight-year-old Billy keep it? Bounty Hunter Nate Landry: Family Fury by Mark L. Redmond.

Book 2: Bounty Hunter Nate Landry.

Nate and Wolf didn’t have much trouble capturing Luke Womack and his two sidekicks. They turned the outlaws over to the town marshal at Wickenburg; and, since the town didn’t have a jail yet, he chained the trio to the jail tree. With their trap baited and set, all Nate and Wolf have to do is sit back and wait to capture Luke’s four brothers, all hardened criminals, when they come to rescue him.

The problem is, Nate and Wolf have no idea who will come when, or how many of the Womack brothers will show up at the same time. They do know Luke’s brothers will be coming angry and ready to kill. They also know if they’re going to survive the ordeal, they’d better be ready for whatever trouble the Womacks bring. It’s more than likely that someone’s going to die.

Author Mark L. Redmond uses his great sense of humor to open book two in his ‘Bounty Hunter Nate Landry’ series.

This is Wild West storytelling at its best, with high-action drama that will draw you back into 1877, where the Arizona Territory comes to life with three bank robberies. four stagecoach robberies, and a murder.

In ‘Bounty Hunter Nate Landry: Family Fury (Book Two); Nate and Wolf (his trusted companion) study and discuss a reward poster over coffee, after eating a hearty breakfast. The two men ponder the reward money offered for Luke Womack and his sidekicks. What they need is a plan.

Let me bring you into the story at Chapter 7:

…One of the things Wolf and I had learned while we were soldiers was the value of surprising the enemy. Often, we had defeated forces that were superior to ours in both number and skill because we had caught them off guard. Catching the Womacks off guard wouldn’t guarantee that Wolf and I could beat them, but we reckoned it would give us an edge.

…We were leaning against the hitching rail in front of the mercantile, enjoying the warmth of the mid-morning sun and smoking cigars. We were also making plans.

… “The Womacks will expect us to be waiting for them here in town,” I said.

… “Because they don’t know us?” Wolf asked.

… “Exactly,” I said.

… “They’ll also be looking for two men,” Wolf said. He tapped the ash from the end of his cigar. “So, we’re going to split up?”

… “And watch the trail from both sides of town,” I said. I exhaled smoke, smiled, and touched the brim of my hat as two ladies crossed from the other side of the street to enter the mercantile.

… “We’ll be close enough that whoever sees a Womack first should be able to signal the other,” Wolf said. He took a long draw on his cigar, leaned his head back, and blew the smoke into the air. “With one of us in sight and the other hidden, I reckon we’ll still have an edge.”

Putting the plan into action, they pack their supplies and saddle their horses with confidence. The plan sounds easy enough, but the adventure has just begun. This story takes place where the west is wild, outlaws terrorize small towns, and the brave bounty men ride in pursuit of justice.

The ‘Bounty Hunter Nate Landry’ series is comprised of stand-alone books, geared for YA and Adults. Author Mark L. Redmond has also produced a western adventure series for middle school readers, titled ‘The Adventures Of Arty Anderson’. Mark taught high school English for 28 years in South Bend, Indiana. He is a member of Western Writers of America, Western Fictioneers, SCBWI, ACFW, and the Single Action Shooting Society. He has been studying the West through reading and travel for most of his life (and he’s an old timer, born in 1953). Mark and his wife Susie live in Arizona, where Mark has turned his attention full-time to writing more old western tales. I am looking forward to book three in the ‘Bounty Hunter Nate Laundry’ series.
