Conner took their inspiration from the life story of an American sculptor named Anna Coleman Watts Ladd. Both authors dedicate this book to those loved ones they lost in war time. They desire future generations will not have to endure the inhumanity that has been inflected on the world through countless, seemingly never-ended wars that destroyed bodies, lives, and families for countless generations.
Although the characters named have been changed, the life story of Anna is woven into this brilliantly written World War l Historical Romance drama. The photos will help you fully understand the life and mission of Abby Belorman. You might find some of the photo’s disturbing, don’t turn away. Embrace the truth. Keeping the truth alive will help generations to come, not repeat history.
While reading, I found myself surrounded by the wreckage of World War l. Brothers Colm and Danny Harp mirror the lives of so many soldiers in so many wars. Danny faces PTSD and the horrors of disfigurements while his brother Colm’s scars are very real, but harder to see.
Abby struggles to find her own identity. Her passion and dreams to travel and live as an artist were nearly snuffed out, when she was forced into an arranged marriage. Her deep friendship with Rosie (her favorite servant) brought her dreams back to life.
While she and Rosie worked to revive her love to create sculpture, “Abby found she enjoyed visiting the young men at the hospital and every day the thought of spending time there drew her back. Each of them had their own story and wounds from which they were recovering from. Their bodies were broken and damaged, but inside each held a part of their personalities intact. They were young men who had their whole lives in front of them, but many of them couldn’t see that.”
Colm comes from a different status in life and different country when his life intersects with Abby’s life and mission. It is the horrors of war that set these two on a journey of compassion and resilience. Their work became a beacon of hope for countless wounded soldiers.
