Review by Book Excellence: Fresh on the job, Kit Hanover is about to be thrown into the case of her life. What she doesn’t expect is for actions to provoke unintended consequences. Murderers like to remain hidden, and Kit has now made herself the target. Trapped between honor and duty, Kit is in for the fight of her life, and survival is anything but guaranteed.
From The Author: It was a good night to kill a lawyer. He looked at the pale blue sky with its runway show of reds, yellows, and oranges. Strips of white clouds intermixed with ribbons of violet. The air was in the upper fifties. Cool enough to make him zip up his black jacket. With a black ski mask pulled over his face and a Sig Sauer nine-millimeter in his hand, he waited against the tall hedge.
His watch showed it to be almost seven o’clock. From past surveillance, he knew the man would be walking out the office door at any minute. He panned the street. Not one car or pedestrian was in sight. The neighborhood seemed eerily quiet, almost as if it was holding its collective breath, waiting and watching what would happen.

Kit Hanover, a determined homicide detective, navigates challenges in her career, facing prejudices from a veteran partner. The plot intensifies as Kit investigates her first murder case, encountering unexpected twists. Brenham skillfully crafts a tale of high-stakes thrills, danger, and tension, with a compelling protagonist in Kit. The narrative’s well-researched procedural details enhance the overall experience, offering readers a compelling journey through the complexities of crime fiction.
Review by Jill Rey: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Brenham is not one to shy away from using unique main characters – you’ll love Kit! Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2024. Verified Purchase. Native American Kit Hanover is looking forward to finally landing in homicide, after dreaming of solving homicides throughout the academy. However, being partnered with Detective Wade Shepard is less than ideal. The constant Pocahontas slurs and references to her Indian bloodlines are making it difficult to remain professional as Shepard rudely takes the investigative lead. At every turn Detective Shepard seeks to throw up roadblocks. From getting Kit transferred to undercover decoy work on the Vice Human Trafficking team, to cutting her out of the homicide case that takes a personal turn, every bit of this book has readers seething over Shepard’s action.
Author Alan Brenham crafts a great villain as readers quickly take a liking to Kit Hanover and the barriers she faces in law enforcement, while maintaining a level of mystery and intrigue regarding some of Kit’s strong dislikes and aversions, all of which will hopefully continue to come out as the series progresses. Brenham, not one to shy away from using unique main characters, once again brings us a strong, representative female to the main page. Adopted from the Comanche Nation reservation at a young age, Kit Hanover brings a fresh perspective, while injecting some diversity into the law enforcement community.
“When Things Fall Apart” is a strong kick off for Brenham’s new Kit Hanover Series. Onboarding readers to the Fort Worth Police Department, various players within, and the crimes the various departments investigate. Providing a powerful introduction to Kit’s family dynamics and personalities, this book will have readers rooting for Kit to succeed.
Review by Sol Tyler: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Well-written tale. Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2023. Verified Purchase. When Things Fall Apart is the first installment in a promising series which, up to now, has kept me entirely hooked. What captivated me the most about this tale is the way in which everything, every event, every character, every twisted detail about the murder is described in such richness of word painting that you really feel as though we have been teleported into the story, and we are sitting in the sidelines watching it all unfold. I really like the way each chapter, although following on each other, can be read as a stand-alone story.
Author Brenham definitely has an artful gift for weaving chapters together in such a way one wants to keep reading the following as soon as the previous one finishes. Loved it!
Review by Chelsey McQuitty: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. A great start to a series. Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2023. Verified Purchase. This book offers a lot of excitement that will have you on the edge of your seat while also making you pretty angry. The main character has to put up with a lot from her partner, which might be triggering for some. All the same, the main character really shines and is well-written. If you love crime stories, then this is a must-read. I’m excited to see where the series goes from here.
Review by J Armstrong: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Violent and gritty! Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2023. Verified Purchase. Detective Kit is assigned her first homicide case with a murdered body washing up at Marine Creek. The only problem is that her assigned partner, Wade, is openly hostile and makes no secret of his disdain of her Native American heritage. The hostile work environment eventually leads to her reassignment. Kit is determined to solve the case anyway. This puts her in the crosshairs of the killer, and she will have to outsmart and out gun him to survive. This book did not shy away from the violent nature of the killer and the vitriol that hatred shows some of our community face on a day-to-day day. This can be hard to read for some, but I think it’s important to remember that Wade’s treatment of Kit isn’t viewed as wrong by many in this country.
Review by langleyd: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Kit Hanover deserves her own series!!! Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2023. I’ve been reading several of Alan Brenham’s titles lately when this one popped up on my recommended list. It’s definitely as good as his other titles. This one centers on a young rookie policewoman who has to work against the prejudices surrounding her at every level. But she will not be deterred. She became a policewoman for all the right reasons and is determined to be THAT policeman who makes a difference. An excellent character who Brenham has developed an excellent story around, it could not have worked with a male lead. I’m impressed with his writing skills and his ability to make her human and a hero.
Review by Mayra Comolli: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Captivating novel! Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2023. Verified Purchase. When Things Fall Apart by Alan Brenham is a captivating novel that deals with highly important and interesting matters. The first book in The Kit Hanover series is an intriguing book with a blend of crime drama, thriller, and police genres. As regards the plot, it tells the story of Kit Hanover, a determined homicide detective, and the challenges in her career. The narrative intensifies as she is assigned her first murder case and runs into unexpected twists. Thanks to the writing style of the author, I was able to put myself into the main character’s shoes. Especially when she has to face prejudices from her veteran partner. I found the dialogues and descriptions in the novel to be of great importance for getting to connect with Kit. All along the story, I read about well-researched procedural details, which in my opinion, give an excellent frame to the personal story. 100% recommendable.
