Dennis E. Carey is a retired physician, lifelong surfer, and historical storyteller who captured a unique moment in American history through a microphone. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he spent his youth as an ocean lifeguard on the beaches of Long Beach, New York, where he still surfs today. During his subsequent career as a pediatric endocrinologist in Connecticut and New York, he published numerous academic research articles—but his deepest passion has always been chronicling the history of the places and journeys that shaped him.
In the summer of 1976, while the United States celebrated its Bicentennial, he and his young wife packed up their vehicle to chase the horizon on a far-flung, 5-month cross-country adventure. Armed with a portable tape recorder rather than a paper journal, he documented their daily miles, places visited, and genuine encounters in real-time.
