How JoJo Got Her Mojo Back by Cynthia A. King

How JoJo Got Her Mojo Back by Cynthia A. King.

Josephine Anderson has one heck of a marriage to clean up. It would be easier if she knew where Ray, her AWOL husband went but he didn’t leave a forwarding address. She always imagined her retirement would involve a chaise lounge and a Pina Colada, but since Ray disappeared it sort of wrecked her vision. After giving him three wonderful kids and the best years of her life, he has the nerve to leave her now.

While waiting for his return she makes some new friends. Friends she might like more than Ray. She passes the time visiting Helen, an elderly woman with a son who kind of likes Josephine. She has a big German Shepherd and a teenage girl in exile because she might be gay as her handler. They form a bond over the summer only to have it threatened by Ray’s return.

It’s at Helen’s funeral where Ray shows up and causes a scene. Josephine has to decide what direction she wants her life to go from here. Her kids want her to reconcile and restore the family home. Ray wants his wife back. But nobody figures Josephine has a few wants of her own.

Review by Ismael Rodriguez-VINE VOICE: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Unique and well-developed characters. Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2023. I really enjoyed reading this book! The story of JoJo and her relationships throughout the book were incredibly interesting and kept me engaged from start to finish. The author’s quick wit and humor added an extra layer of enjoyment to the book and made it very easy to read.

One of the things I loved about this book was the unique and well-developed characters. JoJo, in particular, was a fantastic protagonist who I found myself rooting for throughout the entire story. Her struggles with her messy marriage and her newfound friendships made for a compelling and emotional journey.

The pacing of the book was also excellent, with just the right amount of tension and drama to keep things interesting without ever feeling too overwhelming. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun and engaging read.

Josephine’s situation was tough, and it was heart-wrenching to see her struggle with her emotions while waiting for Ray’s return. But her newfound friends, Helen, and her dog, provided her with some much-needed companionship and support during a difficult time.

The scene at Helen’s funeral where Ray shows up and causes a scene was incredibly well-written, and it had me on the edge of my seat. Josephine’s decision to choose her own path, despite the expectations of her children and husband, was empowering and made for a satisfying conclusion to the story.

Overall, this book was a lot of fun, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to read it. If you’re looking for a well-written and engaging novel with a relatable protagonist and a cast of memorable characters, then this book is definitely worth checking out.

About The Author: Is there life after menopause? Cynthia A. King thinks so, and writes fiction for mature women. A married empty nester, she focuses on issues faced by adult women: cheating spouses, the adult child living in her basement with no exit plan, ageism, illness, being in debt up to their tattooed eyebrows and dealing with their situations with humor and grace, occasionally a sledgehammer or other heavy implement. There is always a man, not necessarily her husband, for romantic high jinks. This is what happens when chick-lit grows up and discovers their Prince Charming is really Prince Harry. No werewolves or vampires required; these ladies might put a stake through your heart. One of her adult daughters is herself a writer, and does social media author-based content. While referring to the phenomenon of niches, she says my mother has her own niche: the angry post-menopausal woman. Huh. I didn’t know she was paying attention.

Cynthia had good Catholic parents who had five kids. She married Tom whose parents were also good Catholics with seven kids. The amount of kids means a deep well of (dysfunctional) material. That’s important because characters are what drive her to write. She loves to create books rich in characters facing the same human condition-life, and how they deal with it. Her stories are humorous and feature a lot of oddballs in ridiculous situations. She is also an animal lover and may include a dog or cat who sometimes are the sanest characters in the room. If you’re looking for a beach read or are flying Southwest and stuck in an airport, her books are an enjoyable way to pass the time.
