Summary: Nara Blake has returned to the Gate House from London to help her aunt Sue prepare to move and sell the property.

Her first night back, someone breaks into the cellar, but nothing was stolen. Then a painting entitled “The Superfluous Woman” is discovered hidden in a nook in Lincoln Cathedral. Nara’s husband Alex, who works at the Tate Museum in London, is asked to look at it, and Nara, also an art expert, gets involved. The situation takes a disturbing turn when the art curator at the Cathedral is found murdered in her flat, and it comes to light that someone has been hiding historical artifacts and pieces of art in the nooks and crannies of the Cathedral. There is another break-in at the Gate House, and this time Aunt Sue is injured.

At the same time, Nara discovers the name Frances Blake in the family papers her aunt has saved.

Frannie’s story begins in Britain in the years just following WWI. Frannie Blake had defied her family and gone to London to join the women’s suffrage movement. Her parents have disowned her, but her younger brother George has quietly sent her money to get by.

Nara tries to tie together the stories of her family with the break-ins at her aunt’s home with “The Superfluous Woman” at the Cathedral.
