The scrutiny and magnification of law enforcement’s actions and imperfections are intensified in the media, courtrooms and in public perceptions. Due to the realistic depiction of life in a police department, significant profanity and explicit sexual content, I recommend this book for ages 16 and up.
I especially enjoyed the conversations and comradery within the work environment. I found the everyday home and family drama made the characters very relatable. The life within the community shared brought a sense of humanity, along with the daily struggle between good and evil.
Let me bring you into the story: “Hamilton could not concentrate on what was in front of him. He flashed back eight years when his life with Clare and the kids was so simple. He patrolled a city with very little violent crime, almost no major drug problem other than weed in the high schools, and never the contentious issues he has been involved in since being assigned to Narcotics and Vice. Chaos seemed to reign once outside the city limits of Orchard Hill. Inside Orchard Hill was just fantasy land now. Do we need to go out of the city to protect our city, or do we patrol the perimeter to ensure evil doesn’t enter?”
Our law enforcement is tasked with keeping communities safe. All they ask in return, acknowledgment of the complexities of the job, respect for each officer’s commitment to serve, and the ability to return home to their family at the end of their shift.

The new media jaded the public’s views of law enforcement across the country. Granted, police work is not always pretty, but with over 200,000 law enforcement officers having an average of ten contacts per day (and many with more), the views that are being presented are not fair and balanced. That is not law enforcement in the majority of communities. Readers can still get excited about a cop thriller and the suspense of cases without being dragged into the abyss of brutality, racism and antagonism or even excessive force.

J.C. De Ladurantey, with over forty, (yes 40!) years of law enforcement experience at all levels, combines street savvy with real police department intrigue in his crime writing novel, COWARDS, CROOKS, AND WARRIORS. Now his latest book: TWENTY-THREE MINUTES is available on Amazon and continues the ride-along with Officer Howard Hamilton of Orchard Hill PD.
Under his radio name, “Joe D, The Doctor of Doo Wop”, he also hosts a radio show “MAKING YOUR MEMORIES, the music, and artists of the 1950s and early 60’s on FM 88.5 and HD-2 on KSBR in Los Angeles and Orange County. He still does not know what he wants to be when he grows up.
He has gone from writing textbooks, publishing his doctoral dissertation (ugh!) to hanging out with his cop friends and musical artists who made the 1950’s and early 60’s the 1950’s and early 60’s.
His efforts include narration of his two books for Audible, iTunes, and Amazon. He also narrates for other crime/mystery novelists such as Dallas Gorham and Kip Meyerhoff. There are several other authors waiting in the pipeline. The fun never stops!
