Every Third Night by Mitch Maiman.

“Delightfully Captivating and Beautifully Written”.

“Every Third Night” is an eye-opening yet poignant story that is set in a busy, dehumanizing, and unyielding New York City residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1984. It brings the reader into the real world of medicine at a time of limited supervision and brutal duty hours through the vantage points of young physicians enduring stressful conflicts and volatile relationships.

Protagonist and chief resident Jimmy Zito seemingly has it all- brilliant clinical skills, handsome, a talented teacher, and a gorgeous girlfriend to boot- but a troubled past and a rash of new conflicts leave him struggling to survive in this, his last month of training. He desperately tries to guide his fellow residents through their own personal traumas, but is not nearly as well equipped to handle the pressure as others might think, especially considering the toxic and exhaustive work schedule, unchecked aberrant behavior of attending physicians, and the highly competitive and emotional demands of Ob-Gyn.

Intern Henry Deluca grapples with the consequences of a horrific surgical complication that he feels responsible for. Co-chief resident Greta Greenberg struggles with her personal dilemma in a busy abortion clinic. Best friend Mike O’Rourke is driven to madness by an unreasonable superior’s callousness concerning a dying patient with ovarian cancer. And Kim Clark, Jimmy’s occult but obvious love interest, is at wits end after constantly being tortured by her sadistic Chairman. Jimmy’s ultra-needy girlfriend and stubborn father do not make things any easier. The intertwined subplots all mesh together and come crashing down when an unexpected, dramatic and haunting mishap leaves the program reeling and Jimmy’s life forever transformed.

Dr. Mitchell Maiman became a physician at age twenty-four and is now retired. As a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology and sub-specialist in Gynecologic Oncology, he has had a distinguished academic, clinical and research career in medicine and served as both a Director of Gynecologic Oncology and Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology at major New York City based university hospitals. He has been recognized for his numerous educational contributions in the field and his devotion and commitment to the teaching of residents and fellows.

Mitch lives with his wife, Dr. Judy Levy, in Long Island, New York and is an avid tennis player and practitioner of yoga. They first met during their residency training. This is his first novel.

Review by DK: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Highly Recommend this Book. Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2022. Verified Purchase. I brought this book with me on vacation to read on the beach and I couldn’t put it down! It is extremely well written, humorous, and there are so many unexpected twists that keep you hooked. As a healthcare professional working in an NYC hospital (with a fiancé who is currently doing a surgical residency) I can attest to how realistic the depictions of residency are in this book. My fiancé and I would laugh at almost every sentence written because of how relatable it was for us. The book is set in the 1980’s but unfortunately not much progress has been made to improve the lifestyle of physicians in training; they are still just as overworked and a majority of them are sadly suffering the trauma, abuse, and mental health issues described. I absolutely loved this book and will recommend it to everyone, whether they are in the healthcare field or not. If you’re debating whether to buy or not- DO IT!

Review by Bobby D.: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Delightfully captivating and beautifully written. Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2022. Verified Purchase. I was so impressed with this beautifully written and thrilling novel in every way. The “hook” was absolutely incredible, the characters were realistic and interesting, and I felt newly educated about the hazards of medical training in this country. It is a very unique work for the intelligent reader, and I would HIGHLY recommend it to all comers.

Review by Melanie: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Captivating storyline, fantastic characters – a can’t miss. Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2022. Verified Purchase. Captivating story that shines a light on the realities of medical residency programs in the US through the lens of characters who immediately hook you. Intersecting storylines coupled with plot twists are brilliant and make it an easy read – couldn’t put it down! Recommended for anyone who loves fiction, as well as those who have an interest in a behind the scenes look at the lives of doctors.

Review by Janet: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Jarring Insights Into Medical Training, and a Great Read. Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2022. Verified Purchase. I always knew that being a medical resident was grueling, but this novel really gives you a detailed sense of what it’s like—-the good, the bad and the ugly of it. Next time I’m in a hospital, I will have a whole new perspective on the doctors and staff there! In addition, this book is a fun read of different, interesting characters and their emotions, and it all comes together in some exciting climaxes and resolutions at the end.

Review by Amazon Customer: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Great easy read. Finished in 3 days! Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2022. Verified Purchase. This book really is a new House of God. I have never read anything that does a better job validating many of the emotions and turmoil’s that residents deal with on a day-to-day basis. A must read for any doctor, healthcare professional, or reader who wants to dive into that world.

Review by Jesse Glueck: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. A must for every young (and older) physician. Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2022. Verified Purchase. Even though I completed my training two years ago a lot of the training experience has not changed. The book was a great read and helped make the difficulties I faced seem not normal perhaps, but easier to bear in retrospect. Made me remember the comraderies that helped get me through. Must read for those in medicine and the people who love them.
