Laura Graystone, a beautiful rising Broadway star, is dragged into the heart of their investigation, and she’s none too happy about it. Especially when danger first strikes, and she needs to rely on her own ingenuity to save their hides.

Review by PolkaDot: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. First impressions can be wrong… Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2023. Verified Purchase. I very much enjoyed this story about Jax, a private detective, his canine partner Ace, and Laura, a gifted singer. This author has a real knack for description. I could easily envision Jax, Ace, and Laura, the Broadway theater, the speakeasies, and 1920’s New York. The author has created a cunning plot that draws the reader in only to confuse said reader with twists and turns, until a very satisfying ending is reached. This was my first book by this author, but it won’t be my last. I have purchased the other three books in the series and have put in a pre-order for the fifth book. I highly recommend this book as a clever cozy with interesting characters that will hold your interest and entertain you.

Review by Enrico Graffiti: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Highly entertaining historical crime thriller. Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2022. Verified Purchase. ‘Songbird’ is the first novel I’ve read by author Gail Meath. It is a crime mystery thriller set in the Roaring Twenties, and the author does an excellent, yet subtle, job of placing the reader in that time period without over-explaining anything. Reactions such as ‘why doesn’t he use his cellphone to call and warn her?’ will pop into readers’ minds until you recall the time-period when technology was far less pervasive than now. So, no forensic investigators, internet searches, police databases etc. to help cop-turned-Private Eye Jax Diamond resolve the murders he encounters.
The storyline was solid and well-constructed, populated by believable characters whose actions and functions fit the period of 1920’s America. There are also many red herrings’ throughput to challenge any sleuths amongst readers. Although author Meath cleverly drops hints and clues, I confess I only got the solution half-right, and that from someone who usually works out the ending of any Agatha Christie I read.
The novel also has high entertainment value that invests the readers in Jax, Laura (the Songbird of the title) and NYPD Detective friend Murph, not to forget Ace, Jax’s loyal canine companion, and their particular world. I really enjoyed this one and have already bought book two in the series. Highly recommended.
Review by Laura S Reading: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Fast paced, unpredictable, exciting start to wonderful series. Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2022. Verified Purchase. While this is fiction, the idea sprouted from a pair of actual murders in 1923.
Set in the era and glitz of the jazz age and early Broadway, this is the story of a young woman who discovered she can sing. She found her place on the stage in The Follies until being discovered.
WOW- full of disclosures in every chapter!
I enjoyed how the characters’ traits were peeled back and revealed as the story unfolded.
OK, perhaps Ace is my favorite but that should be a given. He’s not perfect but he is loyal.
Private detective Jax Diamond has so much potential. I want to learn more about him as this series continues.
I don’t want to give away the plot because there are red herrings and offshoots you’ll appreciate as the main crimes are trying to be solved.
If you like the era, or theatre and entertainment industry, and a smart gumshoe procedural or even a good buddy-type mystery, there is a wonderful surprise here for you.
Review by Cindy F: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Love this series. Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2022. Verified Purchase. I received a copy of Songbird by Gail Meath for an honest review. Songbird by Gail Meath is the first book in the Jax Diamond Mysteries series, and I love this book. Now, I have another series that I need to keep up with, such a small problem.
Songbird takes place in New York during the early 1920’s and Gail Meath pulls you in as if you are part of the story. The descriptions, settings, and plot(s)keep me hooked and wanting more. I liked the interactions between Jax and Laura Graystone, and one cannot forget Ace, Jax’s faithful furry partner. I love it when writers can include furry or feathered friends in their stories. They can bring such a joy, and honest comic relief. There is no denying the chemistry between Jax and Laura, there is more to both then what they project on the surface. I truly, truly love the Jax Diamond Mystery series, and I cannot wait to read Framed.
Thank you, Gail Meath, for letting me dive and hold temporary residence in the Jax Diamond Mystery series Songbird. A truly wonderful, thrilling, and exciting novel.

Review by RM: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. A good cozy mystery murder. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 6, 2023. Verified Purchase. Set in New York in the 1920’s, the suspicious death of a composer, means Detective Jax Diamond and his side kick Ace have a mystery to solve. The era was brought vividly to life through descriptions of Broadway musicals, jazz clubs, and Coney Island funfair. Usually content with Ace’s company, there is also a budding love story when Jax meets a rising musical star.
Part of Jax’s history is revealed in the novel, playing an intriguing role in the plot. As in the prequel, the author does a good job of subtly informing the reader of his life story, deepening his character through this. A great cozy mystery murder.

Review by Azrael865: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Fun 1920’s Detective series. Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2023. Verified Purchase. This is book two in the Jax Diamond series, a very fun detective series set in the 1920’s.In this story, Jax’s cop friend Tim, is framed for the death of gangster Orin Marino’s girlfriend. Jax is soon sucked into a case more complicated than he first thought and ends up a fugitive in a frame-up against himself, while still trying to clear his friend. Laura, Jax’s girlfriend, is determined to help. Despite Jax’s firm desire for her to keep clear, she goes undercover as a nightclub singer in Orin’s Pelican Cub. Jax is just going to have to get used to Laura having a mind of her own. The author has done a great job researching the era. I will definitely be reading the rest of this series.

Review by Lonny K Johnson: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Welcome to Prohibition. Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2022. Verified Purchase. This is a neat little period mystery set in the ’20’s in New York City. It has a hero who is a bit hardboiled, a strong female character as his love interest and sidekick, and more twists and turns than Lombard Street in San Francisco. I would suggest you read the first book in the series, ‘Songbird”, for the background needed. Both books are well worth your time if you like period cozies. The author has captured the period very well.
When Jax Diamond’s best friend, and former partner police Sargeant Tim Murphy is knocked out, put in an expensive car, and dumped in the river along with a dead night club singer, Jax is on the case. The twisted trail he’s following leads to police corruption and another murder. When the clues lead to dirty cops Jax doesn’t know who to trust. The icing on the cake is when his girlfriend Laura decides to go undercover at the club replacing the dead singer. Jax is frantic with worry. Jax works his way through a long list of suspects before arriving at the surprising conclusion. A good read.
Review by Helena (Calif): 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Soooooooo Good!!!!!!! Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2022. Verified Purchase. This second book was just as good as the first! Really enjoy the characters, especially Laura. She does what she needs and wants to do to help Jax and her friends and doesn’t let Jax tell her what to do. This was a very adrenalin rush type of mystery that kept me glued to the story. Loved it! It also has unexpected, surprising twists which made it even better.
There have been a LOT of books coming out that take place in the 1920’s and most of them go overboard with the slang and ways of the time. This author doesn’t do that and it’s one of the reasons I’m enjoying this series so much. Looking forward to #3 which I’ve pre-ordered and hope there will be many more.

As delightful as Songbird (Jax Diamond Mysteries book 1), Jax, Laura and Ace are back and entangled in a whodunnit that will keep you guessing as you flip the pages. The plot is well developed and the era of the 1920s is perfectly represented. Oh! And the cover is simply brilliant like the author. So classy!
Review by Isabel Nicholson: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. This series is just so good. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 17, 2023. Verified Purchase. I finally got round to returning to Jax’s world and what an adventure that is. The book is high action, edge of your seat drama with twists and turns.
The historical setting is really well researched and feels like you are being drawn back in time. I love Laura as a character and how spirited and brave she is, even in the face of danger.
The film noir feeling to the series continues in this book and the expected gangsters and molls as side characters pull readers deeper into the story. I’m already excited to continue reading this series.

Review by Isabel Nicholson: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Jax and Ace Return. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 12, 2023. Verified Purchase. The return of Jax, Laura and Ace might have a new, smaller location but the trouble and danger is still huge. I enjoyed the switch of location for the third book. It created a change of pace and the element of unfamiliarity outside of the big city. The plot is engaging from the beginning and there are some unusual twists and unexpected turns as the story develops.
As always, the characters are great. Jax and Laura are always fun to read about, and they complement each other. It was interesting to see her in a setting where she knew more and was more comfortable than Jax as it added another layer to their relationship. Murph coming to support Jax also showed new elements to their friendship. As always Ace often steals the show but he’s especially loveable around Susie throughout the book.
I enjoyed seeing the small-town side characters as there are recognizable and eccentric individuals that add colour and drama to the proceedings. It will be interesting to see if any of them do make an appearance in the big city in future books.

Review by Jackie Houchin: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. A P.I and a Pup – a totally cute story to show how it all began. Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2023. Verified Purchase. Gail Meath’s TWO OF A KIND is a prequel to her five book Jax Diamond series, set in the “roaring 20’s” in New York. It explains how and why Jax resigned from the Police Department and acquired his new “partner” (a German Shepherd puppy), and leaves it open as to how he begins a “Private Eye” business, which is the basis for the rest of the books. It also explains a tiny bit of his past and how he got his unusual name.
In TWO OF A KIND, it is the puppy (later named ACE) who alerts Officer Diamond to a crime in progress. What falls out is sad, but the puppy just won’t leave Jax alone, following him, showing up for him in the best/worst of circumstances and finally just moving in with him. It’s a very cute story. TWO OF A KIND also documents a list of very unusual crimes. Someone is robbing all the toys from the major department stores – I mean the big, high-bucks stores – and it’s just a week before Christmas. Why? And more importantly who? Together Jax and Ace discover and “take down” the bad guys.
Oh, and in the middle of all this, Jax signs up and takes cooking classes from a very well-known, highly sought-after chef in a fancy-pants hotel. Yeah, I know, weird, but all is fun in this good clean mystery story. It truly makes me want to read more in the series. In fact, I just bought another one on Kindle.

I wasn’t sure when I started this book that I would care for it as I’m not a big fan of historical mysteries, but I’ve changed my mind. This book was incredible. I really felt for the main character Jax as he always tried to do what he thought was the right thing. It didn’t always work out and when he ends up with a dog as his new sidekick, it’s the sweetest relationship.
The dog (Ace) really adds to the book in a good way and isn’t just there to have a dog in the book. He’s smart and resourceful and just the type of pet (or partner) that Jax needs.
I felt so connected to them and to their friends Max and Carla. It really made the book feel cozy to have such interesting characters and I can’t wait now to read the next book in the series.
The plot was interesting, and I was in the dark the whole time about who was stealing toys at Christmas. Great book and I can’t wait to see what else the author has available.

Review by Retiredaunt: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. This book is GOOD! Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2023. Verified Purchase. It’s my second book by this author and she is now on my favorite authors list. Engaging characters (especially Ace) and the situations were believable. The humor made it wonderful. Highly recommend.
Review by Jane Smith: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Surprise ending. Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2024. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. After having read the first book in this series, I missed the next couple. I will have to double back and read them. I enjoyed this book and was easily able to pick up the storylines of the main characters. Wished Ace had a bigger role. Dialogue is sort of stilted with less attention on that than moving forward to action. Was sure surprised at the ending.
Review by Luci: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Clean mystery. Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2023. I have discovered a new author! This author creates great stories with strong plots and relatable characters. The plots have several twists and turns throughout that kept me guessing and very interested to see how it would all wrap up. I enjoy the historical context as well as it makes it more realistic. I enjoy looking up references and digging deeper, so this is up my alley (so to speak). If you enjoy the 1920’s, (gangsters and heroes) this is an author, book, series for you! I look forward to reading the next book! I received an ARC copy of the book, and all opinions are my own.

KILLJOY by Gail Meath.
Book 6 of 7: Jax Diamond Mysteries.
Can Ace and his new gal pal, Lilith, solve this spooky puzzle and stop the killing spree?
New York City, 1923
The suspicious death of a chorus girl sends PI Jax Diamond and his courageous partner, Ace, to the oldest theater on Broadway. At the murder scene, they stumble upon a clue too bizarre to share with the cops or with Jax’s sweetheart, who would definitely make a haunted mountain out of this eerie little molehill. But one bizarre clue leads to the next.
Laura Graystone, Broadway star and Jax’s fiancée, drags her friends into the investigation after she’s scared out of her wits and finds another dead body. Convinced the ghost of a beautiful actress is behind the murders, Laura and her friends follow the breadcrumbs of clues and end up in the slammer charged with burglary and murder.
As Jax digs deeper, even he begins to wonder if the elusive killer is as dead as her victims. Can Ace and his new gal pal, Lilith, solve the spooky puzzle and stop the killing spree?
Review by Paige: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Another great mystery. Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2023. Verified Purchase. I absolutely adore this series and I’m so thankful I discovered it! Gail Meath does a wonderful job of crafting a page-turning mystery. I couldn’t bring myself to put the book down. And while I loved reading more of Jax and Laura’s relationship I loved that we got more of Orin in this story. He’s become one of my favorite characters and I only want good things for him. He’s been through so much and deserves it. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Review by Kindle Customer 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Killjoy (Jax Diamond Mysteries Book 6). Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2023. Verified Purchase. I rated this because it’s simply a good story. Also, it’s nostalgic of earlier times. The author stuck with the props such as pay phones, diners, types of cars from that Era as well as the attitude and personalities of characters. Also, it didn’t have an overabundance of typos and incorrect sentences structures. Those things that I really hate. It’s altogether a good piece of work and a pleasure to read.
Review by Helena (Calif): 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Really enjoyed!!! Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2023. Verified Purchase. So very good! Love this series! This one has a more ghostly spooky touch which I enjoyed a lot. Also liked getting to know Jax’s mother Winnie who has some great abilities along with her cat Lilith. Gail always has excellent historical facts she weaves into these stories and the one at the beginning and notes at the end of the book were fascinating to me. Pre-ordered #7 and look forward to checking out the new series. You rock Gail! Keep them coming please!

Once again, Jax and Laura, along with their friends, start investigating a case and end up solving a number of related cases as well. Ace meets Lilith, a black cat, and they become fast friends. This story held my interest throughout and kept me reading chapter after chapter after chapter. I highly recommend this book and am eagerly awaiting the next one in the series.

Review by B.D. Harpold: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Can the prime suspect really be a ghost? Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2023. In this 6th installment of the award winning Jax Diamond Mysteries series, by author Gail Meath, “Killjoy” once again provides us with a tight story line featuring the characters we have come to love. Detective Jax Diamond, his canine partner Ace, and Jax’s fiancé, Laura Graystone, an up-and-coming Broadway star, have teamed up to find whoever is killing Broadway chorus girls.
Hang onto your hat as Jax, Laura and Ace speed along the streets of New York City during the roaring twenties as they try to solve a ghostly murder mystery! Jax and Laura are convinced that the death of one of the chorus girls at the theater where Laura is performing was no accident. But can one of the prime suspects really be a ghost? No matter if the killer is from this world or the spirit world, they had better hurry. Bodies are starting to pile up, and Laura’s best friend, Jeanie, is about to end up on the killer’s hit list!
I always look forward to any of Gail Meath’s novels, but this series is a true delight as it continues to satisfy from the first page to the last. Plenty of twists and turns and a dose of humor makes the cozy Jax Diamond Mysteries “Killjoy” title, by author Gail Meath, a must read. These can be read as stand-alone books, but you’ll get a more satisfying experience by starting at the beginning with “Songbird”.
Review by Kindle Customer DVH: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Death at the theater. Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2023. Killjoy is book 6 in the Jax Diamond Mysteries by Gail Meath. Killjoy is excellent and packed full of action and mystery. Jax and Laura are engaged and Jax has found his parents. Murder at the theater puts everyone on edge… was it an accident or a clever murder? I love that the core characters are in each book and the relationships grow in a natural way rather than forced. Ace is a force of detective greatness, and does he have a new cat partner? I found Killjoy to be an exceptional mystery and I can’t wait to read book 8, The Diamonds. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
Review by Jane Verco: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Another great Jax Diamond mystery… Reviewed in Australia on October 30, 2023. Verified Purchase. It is always a treat to find the next instalment of the Jax Diamond mysteries has arrived! Continuing from past escapades, and again with Laura and her Follies friends joining in, everyone finds themselves caught up in various mysterious happenings at the theatre. Jax and Ace, this time aided by Jax’ Mother Winnie and her crazy cat Lilith, set out to investigate, of course along with Tim and everyone else joining in the sleuthing.
Needless to say, once again Gail Meath has given us a wonderful tale which was so hard to put down and enjoyable right to the last page. I was delighted to find out that there will be one more (although sadly the last) instalment in Jax Diamond’s escapades coming to us next year – I can’t wait. And in the meantime, Ms. Meath is tempting us with the news that a new series is on its way. And it’s not even Christmas yet!
