Cultivate their imagination? Amateur sleuths David and Derek, two twins as opposite as they can be, accompanied by their assistant Mickey, code named CAT, are off to discover the mystery behind Christine’s cell phone (she swears she put it in her backpack at school but it vanished) Being an adult mystery writer – THE CASE OF THE MISSING CELL PHONE – book 1 in an upcoming series- is all a mystery should be – a lot of clues – a few dead ends – and ending that fooled me. All you parents and grandparents this is a great book for all those middle grade kids you worry about – might even get them away from that cell phone and video games.

Review by Mrs. D.: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Think! Learn! Imagine! Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2018. “The Case of the Missing Cell Phone” is the first in the Davey and Derek junior detective series, where two twin boys are trying to solve the mystery of a missing expensive cell phone. I love the fact that this story is for both boys and girls. It makes readers think, act, and discover. It’s also very engaging and entertaining, with an emphasis on teaching superb life lessons in a very delicate way. While reading this story, children are encouraged to communicate and learn how to crack problems and develop their creativity.

David and Derek are two twins, but they are very different from each other. David is a logical kid and Derek is all action. Supervised by their assistant named Cat, the two young detectives are off to discover the mystery behind Christine’s cell phone. As they untangle the mystery of the missing phone, they realize that the job of a detective is very tough and sometimes uncomfortable, such as when they question their classmates and the people they know.

This is a very interesting read for middle school-age students that will keep them tickled and predicting. I love that the author touched on a few very important issues that accrue in every school: the bullying, stealing, and credulity. These are very important subjects for children who are that age. In her book, Janice Spina nicely conveyed these very important messages. Her story sparked some needed discussion about theft, bullying, and teamwork. It is full of interesting twists and turns, details and clues. It really keeps young readers’ attention as they turn page after page.

It is also a fantastic acknowledgment of friendship and what is all right and wrong, which is extremely important for that age, when children know that they’re all different and should be treated equally. Their own unique personality would shine if you gave them the chance.

“Davey & Derek, Junior Detectives” is intriguing for my taste, and I am sure that young readers will agree with me. The exciting story line will leave them wanting to know more and to see what happens next in this engaging series. A great mystery read for middle-school children!

Davey & Derek Junior Detectives Series: The Case Of The Mysterious Black Cat by Janice Spina.

Davey & Derek Junior Detectives Book 2.

Davey and Derek Donato are twins, but not identical. They gleaned the idea to be detectives from a book their parents bought them on their tenth birthday. The twins discover a black cat and some magic when they visit with their Great Aunt Gigi. The cat tries to communicate with the boys. But what does the cat want to tell them?

Being a grandparent and an avid reader, I am always on the lookout for good clean books for my grandkids. Davey and Derek’s Aunt and Uncle settle in town after years of worldly travel, but there is something different about the aunt that sets her apart from most aunts – she is a good witch blessed with the gift of magic – one of which is her long-deceased cat whose aura lives on in a crystal ball and still tries to help people. Davey and Derek learn they to have a few magical powers of their own one of which is the cat trying to communicate with them and warn them one of their friends is going to get into serious trouble. The question is can they use this magic and prevent a catastrophe? Cute story – clean- refreshing – and not preachy. The Case of the Mysterious Black Cat will keep a young mind intrigued and reading way past their bedtime.

After school they have to go to their aunt Gigi, until their mum is coming home from work. And there they help their aunt unpacking some boxes. And what they find there, amazes them but frighten them as well. A Chrystal ball with a black cat. The next day Mickies sister was missing. Mickey was their best friend and helped them in their detective work. Now, will they find his sister? And most amazingly, how they find her? Very well written. I recommend that book not only for youngsters, for the young in heart as well.

Shout out to John Spina like to see more colored & detailed pictures for the kiddos. The only thing I see wrong with this book is you need to get a new publisher. There were huge spaces/gaps in between words on several pages. I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written children’s mystery book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s movie, animated cartoon, mini-TV series, or documentary. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars. While celebrating their eleventh birthday at the Pizza Palace, Davey and Derek Donato’s festivities are suddenly interrupted when restaurant staff discover a would-be thief breaking into their gaming machines. The twins later visit their Aunt Gigi, where they learn the story of Tamba – the beloved elephant of an African village, which died after living a full life. Aunt Gigi’s living room is filled with mementos of her visit to Africa, including a magical elephant figurine, carved from the elephant’s ivory tusk in honor of Tamba’s incredible life. On returning home, Davey and Derek find Peter Reynolds – the party-crasher from their pizza party – waiting at their front gate. Peter asks for the twins’ assistance regarding the theft of an ivory figurine from the local museum – carved from the same tusk as Aunt Gigi’s figurines. With so many suspects to choose from, all with alibis, Davey and Derek are pushed to the limit, trying to solve the case.

Janice Spina’s adventurous tale of twins just coming into their magical powers is one of excitement, suspense and mystery. With each chapter’s header carrying its own unique illustration, the story is one which can easily be enjoyed by children and adults alike. No stone is left unturned as Davey and Derek are given all the tools, they need in order to fully investigate the case. Many exciting surprises are brought to light in The Case of the Magical Ivory Elephant, with more and more magical characters being disclosed as the story progresses. Having read all three of the Davey and Derek novels, I find myself being lured into the story more and more, almost as if … by magic! I thoroughly enjoyed The Case of the Magical Ivory Elephant, and recommend it to readers of all ages who enjoy the fun, thrill and adventure of two gumshoe detectives, each of whom has the world of magic at their fingertips, whilst trying to solve the most difficult of cases.”

This is book 3 in the Davey & Derek junior detective series and it is the best one we have read to date. Michael loves these two adventurous boys and the addition of some real magic in their lives really added to his enjoyment of the tale. Magic wands and books in the hands of 11-year-old boys really captivated him and my dad has made him a wand out of wood, painted metallic blue, so that he could have one too.

Davey and Derek learn the history and story of Aunt Gigi’s ivory elephant and discover some of this figurine’s magic. They are concerned for the safety of this figurine when they hear that a similar type of figurine has been stolen from the local museum. Certain local boys seem to be implicated in the crime and when a school peer asks the twins to help solve the case, Davey and Derek are thrilled to oblige. The boys embark on an exciting adventure to unwind the clues relating to the case, with some help and some confusion being provided by their magic books’ birthday gifts.

I would recommend this book for middle school children. My rating is five out of five stars.

The friendly leading characters and thrilling adventures provide plenty of excitement and magic to young readers.

Davey and Derek are now experienced young detectives who have a few solved mysteries under their belts. But this new mystery about the scraggly dog would be not so easy to solve if not for Aunt Gigi and her crystal ball and her magical way of teaching boys how to travel.

What the boys discovered at the end of the story surprised me the most. Well-executed ending of the gripping mystery!

As in her previous books, the author provided plenty of life lessons for children. Janice completed her goal with the most valuable teachings about respect, compassion, and understanding. She wisely underlined the purpose of her series, lessons that are very needed for middle school children.

The young detectives face some challenges while unraveling the ghostly mystery, but with help from their mysterious Aunt Gigi and some other friends, they untangle it very professionally.

The twins are growing with her stories, and surprisingly they are that age when boys are noticing girls … and sweet friendships are developing between the twins and the pretty cousins.

The story takes thrilling turns and surprising twists. In some places it is chilling, as a ghost story should be. In other places it is romantic and sweet. A terrific new installment in the Davey and Derek Junior Detectives series!

It involves and amuses, as it takes young readers for a ride to challenge them. A valuable educational tool for children, who like light mysteries and charming adventures!

Review by Michelle Clements James: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Davey and Derek lead an exciting hunt for ghosts. Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2017. Once again, Davey and Derek are off on an adventure to solve a mystery. These two young detectives are on the trail of ghosts that are living in their friend Abby’s house. Abby and her cousin Holly are school mates of Davey and Derek and have more interest in them than just finding the ghosts. When they visit Abby’s home, a large old Victorian house, they discover the house holds secrets even Abby’s parents didn’t know about. Of course, once again, they enlist their Great Aunt Gigi to help them.

This was once again another delightful middle grade book in the Davey & Derek Junior Detectives Series. Davey and Derek and their friends are delightful children who are respectful and considerate of others, but who don’t hesitate to do a bit of sleuthing under the nose of Abby’s parents.

As with the other books in this series, The Case of the Sad Mischievous Ghost is well written and meets the author’s criteria for instilling the love of reading in children.

I highly recommend The Case of the Sad Mischievous Ghost to all middle graders and to their parents. This would be a wonderful book to share, with parents taking a turn reading aloud. This book was a gift from the author. I received no compensation for my honest review.

Review by Children’s Author Deanie Humphrys-Dunne: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. A wonderful mystery novel for young readers! Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2017. Janice Spina is such a versatile, talented author. I loved her new book, “The Case of the Mischievous Ghost.” The twins accepted their new case when their friends, Abby and Holly told them strange things were happening in the house. This time, junior detective twins Davey and Derek, set out to solve the mystery of ghosts in a beautiful old house. Were the ghosts really there? If so, why and how could they make them leave? They certainly had some challenges to solve this mystery. Davey and Derek studied ghosts, and definitely needed help from their magical Aunt Gigi. Young readers will love this mystery and they’ll be anxious to keep turning those pages to find out what happens next. This is a fantastic middle grade book, which I highly recommend.

The twins are growing up quickly as they develop a crush on new characters Abby & her cousin Holly & help the girls solve a ghost story in their house!! The twins have to enlist Aunt Gigi in helping them to capture the mischievous Ghosts! The twists & turns the story takes & the ending are amazing once again! Review by Michelle Clements James: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. I love the way the author portrayed the love and concern between the brothers. Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2019. I’ve read every book in the Davey & Derek Junior Detectives series and enjoyed each one. The Case of the Mystery of the Bells is my favorite so far. As with all of Janice Spina’s children’s books, this book teaches children positive values. The twins are always respectful to others and use good manners. One of the things that stood out for me in book 6 is when Davey had a bad dream, Derek jumped right in and offered his brother reassurance and then fixed him a cup of hot cocoa to calm him down. They always have each other’s back and are friends as much as twin brothers.

The boys Great Aunt Gigi, as we learn from earlier books, has special powers that Laura, Davey and Derek’s mother has inherited to some degree, but Davey and Derek to a much greater degree. The boys are learning how to handle these powers in a positive way and never misuse them. Aunt Gigi is their tutor in these mystical matters.

The characters are depicted in a way that makes them believable, including their powers. I especially love reading about Aunt Gigi. I can picture her greeting the children and inviting them in while bestowing her love upon them as she provides wonderful snacks and mystical experiences.

In Book 6 of the series, we are introduced to Aunt Gigi’s twin sister Auriana and various other relatives from the realm of magic.

If you have middle grade children, I highly recommend this and any of the other books in the series, as well as those in the new Abby & Holly series. I can’t say enough about Janice Spina and her books.

As a Beta reader for Janice Spina, I was given an ARC by the author to read and comment back to her. I have voluntarily reviewed this book without compensation. The thoughts presented in this review are my honest evaluation of the book.

In this volume, the author introduces new characters to the ever-expanding cast and sets Derek & Davey, the twelve-year-old twin detectives, on a journey to solve the mystery of ringing bells. The relationship between the two brothers and the twosome’s respectful interaction with their mom Laura and aunt Gigi add much value to these books, as the boys’ comportment makes them excellent role-models to their growing fan base of middle-class readers.
