by Robert J. Saniscalchi
What started as a peaceful family vacation in a tranquil mountain lake setting for Tex and his family becomes a deadly nightmare.
BUTTERFLY LAKE by Robert J. Saniscalchi is another great action-thriller that not only showcases a parent’s worst nightmare, but the strength and trust of two warriors to save the day against all odds. Dialogue that feels real, a family in crisis and one father doing what we all wish we could do to save his child. But at what cost to everyone involved?
A fast read, no stumbling over unrealistic dialogue, and characters that feel like everyday people (for the most part), a great way to escape into the world of reading!
From the Author: Butterfly Lake is one of my favorites, I had many a great summer vacations escaping the summer heat up in the Pocono mountains of Northeastern PA. Butterfly Lake is the perfect cozy little story to wrap your head around for that weekend read, Enjoy!
5 Star Review: This book opens with main character, Rob Marrino (decorated Army field medic) arriving in the resort town of Pinecrest, Pennsylvania. Rob’s family cabin is nestled in an “ancient forest” filled with pine and hemlock trees. The cabin sits at the edge of “spring-fed” Butterfly Lake. Rob is preparing for his best friend Tex (decorated Marine sniper), and his family to arrive. A relaxing, reinvigorating vacation is what they are all looking forward to.
After some fun on the lake, the adults busy themselves with grilling and preparing lunch. As big black and yellow butterflies flutter on the purple blooming shrubs, Lori is so intent on catching a butterfly in her butterfly net, she is unaware that she is being watched.
Vacation suddenly turns into a parent’s worst nightmare.
Let me bring you into the story (Chapter 8) as Rob and Tex had to sleep overnight on the trail.
“Early the next morning, Rob woke to Tex mumbling, loudly, in his sleep. He couldn’t make out what his friend was trying to say, as he nudged him awake: “Hey, buddy, hey, you okay?”
Tex sat up and blinked at Rob, with a strange, scared look in his eyes. “That damn crazy dream again!” he fumed. “My Lori, calling me from the woods.”
Rob grabbed his pack. “Partner, it’s going to be light soon – in a half-hour or so. Let’s see what we’ve got to eat – I’ve got a feeling we’re going to need it.”
Tex stood and stretched. “Good idea, Doc: I feel a little famished, myself.”
The two shared some beef jerky and trail mix, finished one of two canteens of water, and readied themselves to take to the trail again.
Tex smiled at his friend. They’d been through a lot together, but nothing as tough as this one was for him. He tried to stay calm, as he prayed continuously for his daughter, but it was getting harder by the minute.
Rob cleaned up the campsite, loaded his pack and checked his shotgun.
“She’s out there, buddy,” Tex said, clutching his rifle in one hand and pointing with his knife, in the other. “We’re close. I can feel it.”
Rob felt for him. He saw the strain in his friend’s face, in his eyes. The incident was wearing him down, but Tex was not alone in it; the big man had helped Rob through more than one problem, and Rob would do anything to make it right for his friend.
“I feel it my man,” Rob replied: “we’re going to find her.”
“Yep, today is the day! I can’t wait to get my hands on those creeps.” Tex added, as he started walking across the small clearing. It was the time when night gave way to day, and the woods began coming to life. The birds were up, fluttering around the trees and chirping serenades, while a few bushy-tailed gray squirrels scurried about, looking for their breakfast.
Tex looked and listened, moving on point, as the two slowly made their way back onto the overgrown trail.”
This is tale of two friends, determined to put their military training and skills to the test in a dense, dark, mountainous terrain.
I encourage you thrill seekers to pick up this book. Realistic characters, great dialog and a well written action adventure will keep you turning the page. You will not want to put this book down. I am looking forward to the next book in this adventure series.

Bullets and Bandages: Bond of Brothers
by Robert J. Saniscalchi
Bullets and Bandages, inspired by the true stories of a US Army Field Medic, Vietnam 68-69. Through those stories, the author was given the unique insight into the Bullets and Bandages of war.
Parts of this book are also about the author’s own experiences, and that time period in our history. The trails and victories of Rob and his comrades pull you into a world of survival through willpower, tenacity, and wit.
Bullets and Bandages, a story of love, faith, friendship and humanity.
What was it like for our military, and their time of war, as they fought together to survive in the Jungles of Vietnam?

“it was amazing”
“Inspired by his own brother’s journey in Vietnam war, Saniscalchi’s military action tells the story of nineteen-year-old Patrick, who flew into Vietnam as a US Army Field Medic in January 1968 and went through ordeals of war exercising his tenacity, willpower, and wit.
The remarkable quote: “Courage is fear holding on a minute longer,” begins the narrative and paves the way for a fascinating military action tale that explores the deeper meaning of courage and friendship. Saniscalchi’s hero is an ordinary teenager who is barely trying to survive through tenures of war and that’s what gives authenticity to his voice.
Saniscalchi writes in a simple prose and successfully combines the pace and tension of an action thriller with thought-provoking examination of true faith, bonds of friendship, enduring family ties, and what it means to be human.
The book will appeal to a wide array of readership, including those uninterested in military action.
“Five Stars” Review by Bruce Miller- Team Golfwell Reviews
I was given a complimentary copy of this book. However, that does not in any way influence this review of “Bullets and Bandages: Bond of Brothers” which in my opinion is an excellently written and intriguing story.
I enjoyed reading “Bullets and Bandages: Bond of Brothers” which is the 3rd Edition of this exceptional and extremely realistic story by Robert Saniscalchi, who in my opinion, is one of the best historical fiction writers about the real horrors of war.
The author writes a fast-paced story putting the reader right into the war and all its horrors. I felt the writing was incredibly realistic, frightening and very honestly portrayed the intensity and immediacy of guerrilla warfare with much more drama than if you watched it all happening on a movie screen. Here is a brief excerpt,
“I rolled away, as quickly as possible, and most of the explosion went over me, though I felt a sting in my buttocks and arm; I couldn’t hear anything, except the ringing in my ears. I stayed low, in firing position, with my rifle at the ready, and as I turned in the direction the grenade had come from, I could see the V.C., looking to see if he had got me. I fired a burst and he went down.
“Their heavy machine-gun fire started again, and I knew we had to take it out. I had the best chance, from my location, so I started to crawl my way to their flank. I found a small ravine and worked around it, drawing closer and closer. When I felt close enough, I pulled the pin on one grenade, then another. Then, I tossed them both and hit the dirt.”
In my opinion, I was refreshed to read the way this brilliant author didn’t overdramatize or exaggerate. It was a unique experience for me to read the realism in this author’s style. He ingeniously and very effectively makes you “Walk the walk” in the same intense manner of many very courageous men whose lives were on the line every second of each patrol.
All in all, I liked this book very much and the way this brilliant author simply tells the story created a very lasting impression with me. I give this book loud applause for a story well told and recommend it highly. Very well done!”
Matt McAvoy Rated It 5-Stars “It Was Amazing”
Robert has clearly put a huge amount of work into this Vietnam war drama. For somebody who never fought himself, but has written this book as a clear tribute to the brave men who fought and died, with help from his veteran brother, the research and passion he has applied to it is admirably on show for all to see. I have read many Vietnam war memoirs, and I can truly say that this is as authentic an account as you will read from an author who was not present; the terminology, feelings of fear and anger of the men thrown into a strange jungle environment, battle procedure and knowledge are collectively a vast and admirable feat, and I respect Robert hugely for the sheer work ethic which I know has gone into writing it.
Robert clearly has a great story to tell, which continues even after the principal character’s tour is over – I have not read a war book written from the viewpoint of the field medic, and it was an interesting and welcome approach. This is an honest book – an important book – highlighting the impact of the horrific and hard-hitting realities of war, which Robert so vividly and artfully depicts.
There is exciting action in this book, incredibly well written, with some great set-pieces. The author has created a potential ongoing narrative, suggesting that there is real legroom with this cast of characters to continue their exploits after the Vietnam war – I’d even go as far as to say that the potential of their adventures makes for a promising sequel, which I believe Robert has written, with several other books in the series, which I look forward to reading with anticipation. Robert constructs a good story and develops an endearing lead well – for pure hard work, research ethic and attention to detail, there are not many as conscientious as Robert, and I respect and applaud him sincerely for what he has achieved with Bullets and Bandages.
From the Author: I remember those long rides to my brother’s cabin and his stories about his time as a field medic in Vietnam 68-69. When he finished talking, I thanked God, for he had to have been watching over my brother. Through his stories, I was given the unique insight into the bullets and bandages of war.
Comments and Praise From Readers:
“The action is constant and Saniscalchi’s work, as a result, is an action-packed war story, suited to the silver screen.” By Catherine Perkins of the Historical Novel Society.
“I believe this book brings honor and glory to those who served in this war (especially the field medics)” by Wayne A. Whitehead

From the streets of NYC, to the remote badlands of Iraq, the world finds itself against an enemy as evil and ruthless as ever before.
Follow Rob and Tex as you are pulled into an action-packed story of love, loss, faith, and enduring friendship.
Review from Midwest Book Review: Author Robert Saniscalchi has penned down a masterful fictitious narrative based on the bitter past of U.S. by reconstructing the tragic event of 9/11.
Featuring a snappy relationship of three brothers (Paul, Roy & Rob) engaged in hearty leisure time of a hunting expedition, author skillfully highlights and brings out the character of 28 year old Rob, a U.S. army veteran and a team member of ‘Special Operations Delta Force’ where during a casual chitchat Rob updates his brother about his livelihood and hardship at the military and a silent war being waged against terrorism.
Poignant, yet brilliantly told ‘Freedom’s Light’ unfolds itself delivering a wild ride of thrilling quest and dangerous assignment tasked to Rob against the evil of terrorism. Vividly detailed settings entwined with intricately developed evocative prose is explicit and author manages to evoke the emotional attachment for those who have suffered brutally at the hands of terrorism and its ugliness around the world.
Action oriented, tense and dramatic, author Robert Saniscalchi’s fictional thriller is a captivating modern-day parable that is relate-able and entertaining. Those looking for a powerful reality-based page turner are sure to be intrigued by ‘Freedom’s Light’.
Reviews by Rachael Hannah: Rated: Really liked it. Author Robert J Saniscalchi brings us fictional tale, Freedom’s Light, in a very real, honest exploration of good and evil as related to the harrowing events of 9/11–and the aftermath left in its wake.
Saniscalchi’s story introduces us to his protagonist, Rob, embarking on a family hunting expedition within the quiet wilderness of New York State. The peaceful outing filled with brotherly bonding and banter is short-lived, however, as the characters are soon thrown into the horror of the 9/11 attacks and a subsequent military operation. This is all unfortunately foreshadowed by Rob’s warnings, who understands the fragility of freedom and how it must be protected (or the light will be extinguished). A soldier and patriot, Rob becomes deeply entrenched within an elite team called Light Force. The object of the military operation: To identify the source (a terrorist base in Afghanistan) of another possible attack on US soil, and stop it in its tracks.
The characters are portrayed in a realistic and relatable manner, and the action is well depicted as the reader is soon caught up in the emotion and intensity. Although I don’t usually follow war books, shows, and movies, I particularly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone who does enjoy the genre. Saniscalchi clearly demonstrates a thorough knowledge of his subject matter, and his story does not disappoint. Everyone I know was in some way impacted by the events of 9/11, and I can still recall the exact moments in which I came to learn about what had happened. This is a story of bravery and pays tribute to the men and women who selflessly fought to protect the United States from terrorism–and continue to do so today.
Review by Brittany Dalton at Author’s Den on 10/2/2018: This is an amazing book; it caught my attention from the very first page. It’s about 9 11 and the terrorist that attacked the twin towers and the army that went to battle against them. While I was reading this book a song popped into my head and it is where were you when the world stopped turning by Allen Jackson. That song describes parts of this book. It is well written and I loved the main character. I never knew exactly what happens that day but mow I have more knowledge of what happened. I will recommend this book to my friends and family.

My Life For Her: Enhanced Edition
by Robert J Saniscalchi
My Life For Her is a story about the Vietnam veteran Rob Marrino, his family, and his partner in adventure Tex Larson.
Everything is peaceful in the sleepy little town of Pikeville, but in the blink of an eye, Rob finds himself in the thick of things once more.
This book is not only an action-packed thriller, it is also a story of love, undying faith, drama and humanity.
The new enhanced edition adds to the adventure, and brings it all together.
Review by V.E. on Feb. 2019: Enhanced Edition-My Life For Her. Thrill Ride: “Overall, an interesting book with good characters, a fast pace and a story that keeps you interested until the end. A must read not only for its compelling story but for the focus on Vietnam veterans and the bond they share. Solid recommendation.
Review by Grady Harp on Feb 2019: Enhanced Edition -My Life For Her. Now MY LIFE FOR HER is placed before readers as a more polished novel that reflects the impact of the Vietnam War and the interaction of a veteran as a policeman. Not having read the original book, which apparently cried for a rewrite, this reader found the story intense and involving and a fine speedy read. Will we ever reach a period when previous wars do not permanently impact both veterans and their families as in PTSD et al? Likely not until wars go away. We go on. Grady Harp, February 19
Review by Ann Keller. Rated 5 Stars. It was amazing review of another edition. My Life, For Her gathers momentum like a huge locomotive, gathering speed with each page and thundering toward an explosive climax.
Review by The Prairies Book Review on March 6, 2019: Enhanced Edition-My Life For Her.An absorbing, entertaining action thriller…
Rob Marrino, the highly decorated ex-army veteran is happy to be working as a small-town cop after returning from the Vietnam war. A major drug bust throws him in the path of a dangerous Columbian drug cartel. Rob turns to his friend from Vietnam days, Richard Larson aka Tex, a retired Sergeant with the First marines. Wary of bullets and violence, Rob knows the only way to take down the bad guys is to use their collective combat skills. Rob is the main protagonist, but it’s Tex who steals the show. Saniscalchi expertly provides him a brusque, confident persona. Tex’s clever analytical mind under duress will delight readers. Saniscalchi neatly weaves a deceptively simple plot into a fast-paced action thriller and delivers a tense, satisfying finale. A delight to read!
