Unique, Different and A Little Weird by L. J. Day
Have you ever been called a name?
How did that make you feel?
What did you do?
Unique, Different, and a Little Weird is an entertaining and engaging social story about misconceptions that happen every day in school and on the playground. It teaches different strategies for dealing with frustrations, and the importance of communication. This story also encourages everyone to embrace their own uniqueness.
This creative story is about a boy who overhears someone calling him weird. He gets angry, and wants to scream and yell and hit, but then remembers something important. He remembers strategies his teacher taught him that help him calm down. Once he’s calm Tommy apologizes to him and clarifies the misunderstanding of the meaning of the word weird.
“To be different, unique, and a little weird, is not as bad as I originally feared. So be these things each and every day, because we’re all unique in our own special way.”
From The Author: This book is a great social story about misconceptions that happen every day in school and on the playground. My Special Mind by Laura Day and Trey Day
All too often children with ADHD feel as if the focus is always on correcting or highlighting the negative behaviors associated with having ADHD.
As an educator and a mom with a child who has ADHD, I wanted to bring acceptance to certain attributes of having ADHD.
“My Special Mind” is a book all children can relate too.
Editorial Review: ADHD can be fun, exciting, and adventurous.
An ADHD mind is a special mind.
“My Special Mind” is a great reminder of how special everyone’s mind truly is. My son and I embarked on this special project, where he takes the reader on a journey inside the mind of ADHD.
Buckle up, an 8-year old’s mind is definitely an interesting place to be!
“My mind is always with me, thinking, and creating fun things to do and see. That’s what’s so special about me”.
From The Author: Trey is diagnosed with severe ADHD, ODD, Epilepsy, and sensory sensitivities. With all of this comes challenges.
I would always hear grumbles from him about how “he just can’t do this or that”.
I wanted to find a way to inspire and empower him to prove to him that anything is possible if you put your mind to it, and work hard for it.
We sat down together and I had him make 2 lists.
First: list all of his successes.
Second: List all of his struggles.
I took those 2 lists and created this beautiful story.
“My Special Mind” started out as a project just between us, a special way for us to bond. After reading the finished story, I soon realized that this book was truly something special and felt compelled to share it with the world.
Trey’s perspective on daily life and his thought process is felt by so many children and adults alike. That’s what makes this book unique.

Martin and The Tree Seed by Laura Day
After moving to Texas, Martin befriended an 8-year-old boy named Kevin. The two boys quickly became inseparable. One morning while walking to the bus stop, they came across a truly unique object. Imaginations ran wild with Martin, who was convinced it was a once in a lifetime alien discovery. Fossilized alien poop! Kevin had a different theory. As a way to help bring his friend back down to earth, Kevin drew a picture of what the discovery would look like fully grown. Before he could give it to Martin, it was confiscated by their teacher. Kevin was forced to look on, as Martin befriended the new girl in class. Emotions ran high! Did Martin betray his best friend, or was he just being nice to the new kid in school? You decide!
From The Author: Martin and the Tree Seed was inspired by a student of mine. The student was a reluctant reader. I racked my brain, searched, and tried different books for him to read in the classroom. Nothing I tried seemed to hold his attention. So, one day I decided to write him a story. Martin and the Tree Seed started out as a short story, which he actually read. So I kept writing, and he kept reading. Before long my first chapter book was born. It was such an exciting and rewarding experience.
