Kiss At Dawn by Margarita Felices.

Book 1 of 3: Judgement of Souls

JUDGEMENT OF SOULS is a Gothic horror in which a naïve pure-blood Vampire is tossed into the mortal world. Rachel meets Daniel, a nightclub owner, and his group of friends and after Daniel’s best friend is murdered by Max, becomes embroiled in the search. Rachel tries to fight off her feelings for Daniel, even siding with her Vampire friend Arun to think again about Daniel’s involvement, but he’s her love and she’s going to protect him, no matter what.

Review by Sandy Nicholson: An exceptionally well-written and clean vampire story as I have read in recent memory. Margarita Felices vampires are interesting and likeable in their dedication to saving themselves and humanity from the evil about to be unleashed by rogue vampire Max. The locations described are exotic and lushly detailed for the reader’s understanding of the history described and enjoyment of the tale.

Rachel is a vampire from an ancient and noble family whose parents were the keepers of the ancient scroll of the vampire race. Born a mortal human, she was embraced into the vampire world at the age of 16. She wakes from her first slumber to find that her parents have been betrayed and the sacred scrolls stolen by Max, the vampire she loved and trusted. For centuries she trained as a warrior and tracked Max to exact revenge for his betrayal and return the ancient scroll to its proper place with the Elders so her parents could be vindicated and revived from their forced sleep, hidden away for their own safety.

She traces the scroll to the owner of a nightclub, living in a mansion passed down to him from his eccentric grandfather. When Rachel meets Daniel, she is taken with him, and they fall in love without him knowing anything about her past or that she is not a normal human woman. When Daniel does find out the truth about Rachel, they determine to search together and find the scroll and a sacred book that has been hidden from the vampires for centuries because of the power it can unleash. Their journey introduces many characters to help and hinder them in their quest.

When the scroll and book are finally found it is stolen again by Max and begins a battle between himself and Rachel. Rachel wants her revenge, and Max wants the power to overcome the elders and rule humanity. Rachel’s warrior skill and Daniel’s courage in the face of unbelievable odds leads them to a final showdown that restores the sacred artifacts and changes Daniel’s life forever.

This book was enjoyable for the story itself. This is not a sexy romp between a human and an immortal. While they do fall in love, there is no gratuitous sex scenes in this book that would restrict younger readers from enjoying it. I found that the story flowed well until the very end, and it was not a book you could guess the ending of at all. I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys vampire novels. I look forward to reading more of this author’s work. *ARC generously provided in exchange for an honest review. *

Review by Peg’s Reviews: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Wonderful, fast paced thriller. Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2013.Verified Purchase. Can an entire vampire population be destroyed?

The vampire elders called to order a hasty and secret meeting. The grim reality of what they were facing was that their entire vampire existence was on the verge of being endangered. There was an evil so monumental and savage threatening them that it could very well destroy or change them forever. And this group of elder vampires knew precisely who had set them up for their demise. It was Max, one of their own elders, an ancient and mighty vampire.

Max had always craved power and control. And the unleashing of this mammoth evil from Hell was always part of his plan for greatness. Max was convinced that once he released this evil from Hell’s prison, he would be looked upon as a favored child and granted an unlimited amount of dominance and prestige.

Rachel is a pure blood ancient vampire and has known Max for a long time. Rachel had even loved him once, but that was before he exposed his true colors and betrayed her. Ever since then, the two of them have played a cat and mouse game. Whenever Rachel had gotten close to Max, he would elude her. But she was not about to allow that to happen again. He had hurt her and her family, and now Daniel – the mortal man she loves.

When the inevitable ominous battle comes, Daniel will be fighting right alongside Arun, Rachel’s friend. They will be wheeling their swords until every head of their enemies is rolling on the ground like hairy runaway bowling balls.

Judgement of Souls is a riveting and fast-paced novel. The reader will find themselves flipping pages and glued to their seat. So, I recommend that you pick up a copy, settle in and prepare yourself for a fast ride into the world of vampires. You’ll be glad you did.

Review by Kimberly L.: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Attention to detail, in depth and keeps you on your toes! Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2012. Verified Purchase. LOVED the book! I especially enjoyed how the author would take a moment to explain and tell us a bit about a building, the land, and would give us the background of a new character introduced so that the reader could get a feel for that person and what was going on and be able to easily imagine the scenario, The author was very descriptive and paid enough attention to detail that us as the readers could feel we were right there witnessing the love, the pain the passion, every emotion she invoked through her characters.

The main Character Rachel I felt just about all of us in some way or another could relate to what she was going through and how she was feeling, she was a child of darkness but with a heart, she went against what we usually see as the norm for vampires, and I found that exciting! The story was not only easy to follow but kept me on my toes, I couldn’t put it down!! I hope to see more stories like this in the near future from this author. Thanks for a great read!

This book is a combination of suspense, intrigue, romance, paranormal characters with bits of history woven within the pages of this book. I was hooked from the very beginning until the end. The descriptive nature by which Margarita Felices writes this story is brilliant. I couldn’t stop reading. I had to know what happened next. Would Rachel tell Daniel the truth? Would they realize the route vampire wasn’t new? Do they figure out it was Max? Do they find him? Will Rachel and Daniel get there happily ever after? Most importantly, this is a series. I don’t think I could get enough. Seriously good read and highly recommend!!

Review by Amazon Customer: 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2013. Verified Purchase. I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised to see this novel return to the old traditional vampire and puts to rest this idea that vampires have to “suck”, sorry for the pun!

This story is reminiscent of something that Anne Rice would write, in that Felices’ vampires are quite dark and dangerous, and yet they can still feel human emotions such as jealousy and love. The attraction between Rachel and Daniel is magnetic, and when an old love threatens not only their relationship but all mortals, Rachel must rely on her true friends to defeat the evil Max. I don’t want to spoil anything here, so I won’t say anything other than I really enjoyed this debut novel! The book is well paced and cleverly written. The scenery is Gothic and brooding. She puts a new spin on a classic monster! I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

Review by A. Mosa: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Clever and Imaginative. Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2011. Rachel is a centuries old vampire but with the face of a young woman. Like all her vampire kind, she ages at a much slower rate than mortals. In spirit, she’s also a young woman. The story opens on Halloween and Rachel longs to join in some “human” fun. What better place than the popular Goth club in Cardiff, Wales, where she is “living,” at the moment? She drifts inside and sits at the bar where she is both amused by and blends in with the club’s revelers in vampire costumes.

Daniel, one of the club’s owners notices the lovely new patron and asks her to dance. The mutual attraction has Rachel promising to return the next night. What she doesn’t realize, and he, a mortal can’t know, is Max, a rogue vampire looking for a powerful but missing book which contains the means to reign over all vampire cults and enslave mortals has tracked the book to Daniel’s home. Max will stop at nothing to obtain the book, including killing Daniel. Once Rachel becomes aware of Max’s intentions, she must figure out a way to defeat him and keep Daniel safe. As the story progresses, she learns she has strength she never knew she had. What she doesn’t have is a way to keep from falling in love with Daniel in the process.

When Daniel discovers the truth about Rachel and what Max plans, he insists on helping her defeat Max. Together, and with a bit of help from her allies, they are a formidable team.

The story is well paced, and the characters are well drawn. Ms. Felices has a great imagination. Her settings paint a vivid picture and the background she gives for the origins of the vampires is very clever. This is an excellent debut book, which manages to give the reader a different spin on a vampire tale. I understand Ms. Felices plans on making a series of her vampire stories. I can’t wait for Aaron, Rachel’s vampire friend to have his own book.

Review by Brenda Franklin: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Action packed, fast paced, and a bit on the dark side! My kind of story. Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2013. Rachel is a vampire who has found a man who intrigues her in every way, Daniel Moore, the local club owner has recently come into an inheritance and lives with a few friends in a mansion. The story takes place in Cardiff, England where the villain Max is on the hunt for two scrolls to tell him where an ancient book is hidden. Rachel’s goal is to beat him to it and save her parents.

The connection between Rachel and Daniel was so strong and pretty much instant! From the moment they saw each other at the club they couldn’t get enough of each other. And I knew there was a reason why! Rachel and Daniel weren’t the only ones the author focused on; everyone seems to get their thoughts out building to the thickening plot in every paragraph. Daniel’s friends, the villain, Rachel’s friend Arun, everyone seemed to have a little time in the spotlight. Jumping around from one character to another might seem confusing, but I found it thrilling.

This is a fast-paced story where you can’t skip a paragraph. If you do, you’ll be missing out on something. Time moves quickly and the story is very fast paced. There was no filler, no beating around the bush, just straight plot and action from beginning to end!

Now, an issue I had was with the paragraphs or sentences running together, but that probably had something to do with the version I received. There were grammar errors, but nothing that unfocused me from what was going on in the story.

I think my favorite part about this book was that it told a darker side to vampires. It wasn’t all glam and sparkles, no blood bags, no substitute solution, no cure, and no sunlight. She wrote about a darker vampire with traditional weapons and a blood lust. Let’s not sugarcoat it. Vampires kill humans like cattle, it’s messy, but they have to feed to survive. And when they fight its action packed and deadly, the author doesn’t waste time with meaningless chatter, it was serious business and the author’s ability to tell this story the way she did was outstanding.

It’s pretty obvious why I gave this book a 5 out of 5. Brenda Franklin, author of the Pulse Trilogy, and Guardian, a Fated Pairing.

Review by alien: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Its quick and it bites! Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2013.  Yes, a vampire book. But not just another vampire book! Judgement of Souls is a book that made me happy, it certainly did. I went from page one to the end in no more than two sittings. Meet Rachel, a vampire, who has been here for more decades than one can count on his fingers. Meet Daniel, a young man who is normal, like us, and unlike a vampire. But he is no victim to Rachel’s blood-guzzle. He is someone Rachel falls head over heels for!

Rachel has been living for ages but as a young woman, she has the characteristics of one too. So, when she meets Daniel at a Halloween party, she just can’t get him out of her head. Same is the case with Daniel. They are madly in love with each other, and nothing can keep them apart. But they are not exactly a couple now, are they??

That is where the fantasy and mystery of the story really starts to pick up. Max, an older vampire, is looking for a book – a book that will let him lord over all the other vampires. And he will stop at nothing to pursue and obtain that book. In the process of retrieving that book, Max kills Daniel’s best friend, a friend who was almost family to Daniel.

Rachel needs to fight Max; she does not want to lose Daniel but still has to tell him about her reality. What happens next is for you to find out. I do not want to reveal it all in this review.

Overall, this was an extremely good book that handled the vampire topic, which has been overdone of late, very well. There is no doubt that the author, Margarita Felices, is not one to just fill pages. She was clear and concise about the events in the book, and frankly I like it that way. The story does not have to go on forever, and it did not. And even then, the author did manage to piece together great backgrounds to all the characters and events in the story. This certainly deserves five stars, and I will not hesitate to read the author’s future works.

Review by Owen Robinson: 5.0 out of 5 Stars: A “Righteously” entertaining romance novel! @badwordplay. Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2014. Verified Purchase. Man, the Catholic church can’t catch a break. After all of their other scandals, come to find out, according to this book, that they knowingly recruited Vampires to help them during the Crusades! It’s a wonder why this scathing tell all book isn’t getting more press…

Being a big Dr Who fan, and a big Torchwood fan, I was really excited to see this book was set in Cardiff. However, instead of present-day Cardiff, the story is set in 1715, and we follow Rachel, a woman scorned, who also happens to be a vampire. She must deal with a plethora of issues and problems, with her love life, and (due to vampire hunters on her trail) her literal life.

While this book is a “vampire romance” novel, I am pleased to say that it is much better than that “OTHER” vampire romances novel series (looking at you, “Chicken Soup” series!). It wasn’t the saccharin sweet teen love story that you sometimes get with romance novels: this is a very well-done romance novel, with honest and believable characters, and a female main character that is actually a strong, independent woman.

This is the second book in the series, but it still reads well as a standalone story. If you are interested, you might want to start with Judgment of Souls, but you could absolutely jump in with this volume.

Review by Brenda Lee: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Perfect for Readers Who Like Classic Vampires. Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2014. Verified Purchase. Readers will quickly be drawn into the story about Rachel, Arun and Max. It flows at a steady pace, with lots of room for further development in another installment.

The Call of the Righteous is Book 2 of the Judgment of Souls series but reads well as a standalone novel. (I haven’t read the first book and didn’t have a problem keeping up.) The story is set in Cardiff, Wales, which I’m seeing in a lot of vampire books lately. It’s definitely more romance than gore, and Rachel appears to be rather naïve. I find this interesting, considering she had such a lead role in the first book (according to the reviews). However, seeing Arun as a protector and leader overshadowed my need to see Rachel as a vampire heroine.

If you’re a fan of classic vampire novels, you’ll love The Call of the Righteous (Judgment of Souls).

Origin by Margarita Felices.

Book 3 of 3: Judgement of Souls

The Crusades were set to be the biggest massacre of its time for the church, until a strange visitor offered to help and win their battles, and the pope agrees – but with a condition. Two hundred years later and with the wars still raging, the church makes a deadly mistake, they recruit a secret army to hunt down all that are kindred and kill them. When the vampires hear of their betrayal, they end their help and watch as the Christians are beaten into retreat. At the same time, Phillippe de Grosnez, a vampire Captain, stumbles into a cave and finds a long-lost vampire artefact, the Book of Cain. Made at the time of the very first vampire, Cain – the book is known to hold the names of each kindred soul and many magical incantations – including one to give life. But in the midst of battle, Phillippe falls in love. She’s beautiful and brave and hates the sight of him. Arianne Plemont learns to love Phillippe and after the vampires leave the Crusades and head back to the Elysium (the vampire community) they vow to decipher the book and teach from it and to guard the book with their lives. Years pass and they are married, and they approach the vampire council to plead with them to give them their own child, a pureblood. Rachel is born among a fanfare befitting royalty and the youngster brings new life into the community. A few weeks before her Embrace (the start of her vampire life), a handsome ancient vampire arrives. Max seduces the young girl; he is so charming and courteous that she even defies her parents to be with him. On her 16th birthday and after the ceremony of Embrace, Max sneaks into the temple and steals the book and sets a fire to hide his treachery and escapes after killing three guards. When the discovery is made, they send guards to find Max, but he has disappeared. Philippe and Arianne are held responsible and are banished from the Elysium and their powers taken as punishment. But after an intervention by another council member, they are allowed to stay until Rachel can say goodbye. Rachel pleads with the council, but they will not overturn their decision and all three decide to leave. Rachel promises to find Max and the book and restore their name… and the hunt begins.

About The Author and Books: IF YOU LIKE YOUR VAMPIRES DARK AND CLASSIC, THEN CARRY ON READING.

JUDGMENT OF SOULS is a Gothic horror trilogy and would immediately excite readers of Stephenie Meyer’s The Twilight Saga, Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake Vampire Hunter and L.J. Smith’s Vampire Diaries books. Rachel is a Vampire of today: conflicted, compassionate, idealistic and now extremely dangerous. She’s kind, thoughtful and a vicious killer. JUDGEMENT OF SOULS will chronicle her life from leaving the safety of the Vampire Elysium to her subsequent battle with Max that spans over 300 years.

The first book is about the discovery of the Book of Cain during the Crusades. It covers the miraculous birth of Rachel – from pure-blood vampire parents – the handsome stranger that comes to the Elysium, seduces Rachel on her 16th birthday and steals the book… and it will finish with a dark punishment.

Then the second will follow Rachel as she searches for Max and the book, travelling from continent to continent. She encounters a handsome Count heading for execution in the French Revolution and has run-ins with a group of Vampire killers called the Righteous.

The third is set in modern-day where Rachel meets Daniel. Daniel’s family hold a dark secret that he discovers just in time as he is forced to face Max when his best friend is murdered by the vengeful vampire. Can Rachel battle Max to save the man she has grown to love?

These novels will be bloodthirsty and violent, but along the way, there will be tales of love and romance and heartbreak.

The PSYCHIC: Beryl is a con artist and after she’s left penniless, she comes across this scam while walking through a market and five years later – and being very good at it – she now has a great life. But Beryl really shouldn’t mess about with this sort of thing, because you never know who’s going to visit you next.

THE STORY OF MY HEART: Megan made a choice, and it was a wrong one, but now she gets a second chance and deep down she’s scared to death because Megan has a secret. And her past is about to catch up with her.

A CHRISTMAS EMBRACE: A collection of three short stories to curl up with, on a cold winter’s day. Have you ever wondered why Santa only visits once a year?

…A Model Christmas: Did Ashley make a terrible mistake leaving the man she loved to pursue her career? She’s home for Christmas and about to find out.

…A Christmas Dance: Christmas is the time to be with your loved ones, but not for Jane this year. Christmas will never be the same when you’re left alone. But this year a promise will come true.

…The Christmas Gift: Maya didn’t do Christmas, but this year she’s met Nick, and it feels like he’s the perfect gift. But Nick holds a very dark secret and after he leaves Maya with a special gift, she’s anxious to repay him for it.

ORDINARY WINS: Have you ever thought that life had passed you by? Ever look in the mirror and wonder where you had gone? This story will give you hope that it’s not too late! Sex, drugs and rock n roll…. The life you may dream about, the emotions you want to tell the world… all in one little story!

THE DECOYS: Two Welsh girls on holiday, two Ukranian jewel thieves hoping for a quick escape out of France, just what could go wrong? An erotic comedy comp.

TRANCERS: On his dream holiday, a near accident sends Travis down a dark road towards a hotel. But why isn’t he now allowed to leave? And just what are the Trancers? Can Travis escape them?

RHIANNON: Accused of witchcraft and burnt at the stake for loving a married man. Of course, she really was a witch, but she wasn’t a bad one. Now 400 years later she’s back to burn down the town and kill the new generation of those who condemned her and killed her child.

BLOOD TIES: After her accident they all think it’s in her head. But Helen knows something’s wrong. And that the man haunting her is real. He’s very real. And he’s a stone-cold serial killer.

MADDIE STONE REVEALS ALL: Maddie Stone has a secret and after 30 years of silence, she wants to tell it. She has quite a story too. Maddie has slept with a lot of famous musicians and even a few actors. Back in the day she was called Backstage Personnel – but these days you’d know her as a groupie.

Fran Bishop’s ambition was to write a bestselling book. She joined a company that had both a book publishing side and a magazine side. She landed a reporter job there just to get a foot in the door, but after ten years, that ambition had left her, and she took on every assignment her Editor would send her on. Then one day her editor called her into her office and told her that she was being sent to write Maddie’s story. It wasn’t the assignment of her dreams but after persuasion, she agrees. Fran is surprised at how straight and down to earth Maddie was. Not the rock chick that she’d heard or be led to believe. And after a rocky start she begins to enjoy some of the very graphic sexual stories and surprisingly found that she’d started to like Maddie too.

Just what is Maddie’s story? And what is her 30-year-old secret? Maddie Stone Reveals All, come and read about a life we never really knew existed.

ABOUT ME: I live in Cardiff (Capital of Wales) with my partner and three little mad dogs, and I work for a well-known TV broadcasting company. I love living in Cardiff because, for all its modernization, there are still remnants of an old Victorian city. I love writing and base my stories in Cardiff because it has such character. When I can, I go out to the coast and take photographs; mind you, we have a lovely castle in the city centre and a fairytale one just on the outskirts, so when I feel I can’t write anything, I take a ramble to those locations, and it clears my head.

I suppose it was inevitable that someday I would write a novel. My teachers at school used to limit me to no more than ten pages. When I left school, I wrote short stories for magazines, and it paid my way through college. I am Gothic, I love gothic fashion, the architecture and the music. The club in my novel is real. When I was writing book one, I got all my club material and clientèle from here, I wouldn’t have finished that section without it.
