Dark Pilgrim Rising by R. Peter Ubtrent.

Dark Pilgrim Series 1-6.

7,680 years ago, humanity was imprisoned for over 2,500 years by the shape-shifting Dwad-Mehstiv. The Noble Houses arose out of the ashes of the Wars of Conquest, The Church of the Blessed Prophets arose out of the Wars of Religious Independence from the Drek, and the Imperium arose to bind the Houses and The Church. When the Emperor of the Imperium is assassinated, chaos descends on the human community and The Church of the Blessed Prophets begins the brutal road back to its former commanding position while an enemy long forgotten over the eons returns to exact revenge. This is the world into which Ailanthus and Tethys find themselves, imprisoned in one of the most fearsome penal colonies in the Imperium. With the chance to finally escape at hand, the two men and their friends begin to understand that their roles are far larger than they ever thought possible.

Review by Nathan Alexander: 5.0 out of 5 Stars Great Sci-fi Read. Ubtrent has written another well-crafted and readable sci-fi adventure that keep me up all night so that I could finish. Set in a future far different than we would ever expect, Dark Pilgrim Rising is a fast paced, multiple sub-plot adventure that carries the reader to worlds excellently described, to believable aliens, and to characters that jump out of the pages at you with their realism. I can hardly wait for the next book of the series. This will prove to be a classic!

Seed of Power by R. Peter Ubtrent.

Dark Pilgrim Series 2-6.

The escape was successful! Ailanthus, Tethys, and their friends have escaped from the penal colony and the first place they find themselves is the black-market planet of Kali Prime, home to some of the worst criminals and cheats not locked up. Wanting to ditch their stolen transport for something a little less obvious, they quickly learn that life outside K’ar Krack’a isn’t all that different than it was inside. Meanwhile, Rohini and his spy master begin their attempts to hold the Imperium together from the rebellion boiling over at the heavy-handed methods of the new emperor. The Dei Glorium and her High Confessio of The Church of the Blessed Prophets begin their effort to destroy that which they want to save and Lord Cardinal Cebrenia Caroli begins her bumpy road toward revenge.

Review by Susan Uttendorfsky (Owner, Adirondack Editing). 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Superb series! Seed of Power, the second book in the Dark Pilgrim series, is an astonishing, fast-moving blend of politics and science fiction. The two main human characters have now been joined by several members of various species. As this rag-tag collection of strays tries desperately to avoid recapture by the dogged Imperium, the religious-political thread twists, and turns with lightning speed. With the pieces of the newest Emperor ready to be shoveled into his coffin and the next heir determined not to be part of the Imperium, I can’t even begin to guess how the next book in the series, Dark Throne, will play out. Mr. Ubtrent’s imagination has generated a fantastic reading experience. I couldn’t put it down!

Review by Nathan Alexander: 5.0 out of 5 stars Great continuation. Wow. This just keeps getting better. Book two, Seed of Power, answers many questions raised in the first book, yet raises others, leaving the reader wanting more. The plot lines advance very well and the characters have a depth to them that is real and tangible. The breakneck pace, lyrical beauty, and astonishing scope of the universe wherein the story is set give the series a Frank Herbert-like essence. The growing conflict between The Church of the Blessed Prophets and the remnants of the Imperium is wonderfully contrasted with the growing conflict between the Dei Glorium and her High Confessio as well as the tension between Ailanthus and Rohini. I can hardly wait for book three to come out.

Dark Throne by R. Peter Ubtrent.

Dark Pilgrim Series 3-6.

The virus is sweeping through the human community. The Drek war machine continues to press forward, capturing and converting millions of humans. And the Ynos begin their military attacks in earnest, destroying Imperium forces at will. This is the Imperium that Ailanthus has inherited as the new emperor and he is making it perfectly clear that he doesn’t want anything to do with it. Ailanthus will be betrayed; he will lose two close friends and his responsibilities as the new emperor will make it harder and harder for him to remain sane. Meanwhile, Lord Cardinal Cebrenia is working ever closer to control of The Church of the Blessed Prophets and her revenge and the Lord Cardinal Nerodia is getting closer and closer to insanity as all his hard work begins to slip through his fingers.

Review by Susan Uttendorfsky (Owner, Adirondack Editing): 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Ubtrent hits another homer! The galaxy flees in vain before the vengeance of the Ynos. Four thousand years ago, their peaceful cousins were viciously hunted down and exterminated in a glut of greed. Now they have returned, seemingly undefeatable and hell-bent on destroying everyone in their path. The reluctant Emperor finds himself the military leader of not one, but two distinct species, at war with each other. Persistent and conflicting memories from both groups vie for his brain’s attention. But it’s the present he must force himself to focus on, even though unremitting discoveries of atrocities committed on his behalf also threaten his mental stability. The core group of supporters who escaped with him from the penal colony, with a few new additions, is fragmenting quickly. Intrigues, betrayal, murder, and insanity stalk the Imperium, the religious Houses, and the new Restoration. It’s anyone’s guess what happens next. Dark Throne, the third book in the Dark Pilgrim series, is excellent. I highly recommend this extraordinary series to anyone who enjoys science fiction or political intrigue.

Review by Nathan Alexander: 5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Ubtrent. R. Peter. Ubtrent continues his fantastic series with Dark Throne, answering many questions and raising others that leave the reader spell-bound. His descriptions are awesome and his prose flows freely, giving a quality and finesse to his books that is breath-taking. His sub-plots interweave with his main plot like a professional flower-arrangement, leaving the reader craving more. This is turning into a great series and will be, I’m certain, a Sci-Fi classic in no time. Can’t want for the next installment.

Dark Enlightenment by R. Peter Ubtrent.

Dark Pilgrim Series 4-6.

The end is near. Hundreds of planets have been laid waste by the Drek and the virus. The Restoration begins in earnest its campaign to destroy The Church of the Blessed Prophets. Lord Comte Mishi’s rebellion against what’s left of the Imperium gains solid ground as the Lord Cardinal Nerodia presents the Lord Marshall Bhagavan in chains. Ailanthus’ band of friends grows smaller and smaller with death, betrayal and self-sacrifice, while his responsibilities grow larger and larger and he learns fully the distorted history of humans and Dwad-Mehstiv and what he must do to save the last remnant of humanity. Thus continues the saga of Ailanthus and Tethys, two friends caught up in a universe that wants more from them than they are willing to give.

Review by Susan Uttendorfsky (Owner, Adirondack Editing): 5.0 out of 5 Stars. A fantastic series keeps continuing! Ubtrent has compiled another crowd-pleaser with this fourth title in the Dark Pilgrim series! The exceptional writing incorporates rich, vibrant details and imaginative, note-worthy characters. Confusion and chaos rule – each character starts out with a firm purpose but is forced to adjust quickly to deal with unexpected complications. A subtle touch of humor pervades; a large, insectoid assassin frustrated with his error thinks, “It was enough to make him molt right there on the spot.” This transitional book has a little less action than the previous volumes but is jam-packed with information and the plot twists will make any reader of this series gasp with delight and shock. Ubtrent has a first-rate ability to weave multiple sub-plots throughout the series, each of which branches into additional scenarios. His accomplished introduction of new, distinctive characters as preceding ones meet their unexpected demise continues to enchant this reader.

Dark Redemption by R. Peter Ubtrent.

Dark Pilgrim Series 5-6.

The F’gat Ynos have decimated planet after planet, leaving behind nothing but the dead. Ailanthus, Tethys, Xylella and Rohini now must bring what remains of the Noble Houses and humanity together, to begin the final battle that will decide whether humanity will survive or fall under the callous extermination of the Ynos. Cebrenia’s plans to marry the emperor and bring her revenge against Nerodia are nearing completion, but her possession of a Thrumbo Worm will soon be discovered and her life will take a turn she had not expected. Nerodia and Mishi continue to move their rebellion forward, oblivious to the fact that there isn’t much of humanity left to rule. Book five of the series begins the end of humanity’s hegemony over the galaxy and brings to a crisis the very foundations of St. Aurum Gossomer and The Church of the Blessed Prophets, leaving disaster and chaos in its wake.

Review by Susan Uttendorfsky (Owner, Adirondack Editing): 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Another stellar performance from Ubtrent. All the political segments in the galaxy, religious or military, are dissolving rapidly in this fifth book of the Dark Pilgrim Series, wrecked almost beyond recognition by the vindictive Ynos and a mysterious virus that only attacks humans. Multiple persons claim leadership roles without knowledge of each other. The most cataclysmic weapon in the galaxy could save humanity and all the other species living with them. But will the unenthusiastic Emperor figure out how to deploy it in time to thwart the Ynos in their quest for complete eradication? While some splinter groups of his original clique unknowingly work in concert with his scheme, others have his premature demise as their objective. Which band will accomplish their plan first? This six-book series begins to coalesce into a grand finale, but I’m sure there’s plenty more action and twists to come!

Fallen Pilgrim by R. Peter Ubtrent.

Dark Pilgrim Series 6-6.

The Imperium Navy is but a shattered remnant of its former glory. The Drek, Druzsni and Kroor have all been attacked and decimated by the F’gat Ynos. Only a handful of humans have survived and most of them live in simple squalor on Earth with the Lord Cardinal Alos Alos Napaj, away from the ever-prying eyes of the Ynos. If Ailanthus’ plan is to succeed, now is the time for its fulfillment. The Thrumbo Worms are being collected but the Guiders, under the tutelage of Christl, are not ready. Thus ends the saga of Ailanthus and his friends as they fight to the bitter end in a hopeless attempt to destroy the Ynos before they destroy everything.

Susan Uttendorfsky (Owner, Adirondack Editing): 5.0 out of 5 Stars. A glorious ending to a fabulous series! Wow. I just finished the last book in the Dark Pilgrim Series. While the ending to the Ynos threat is certainly explosive and riveting, the ending to the series itself is supremely satisfying. It ends in an unexpected yet absolutely gratifying wrap-up that is just perfect. I could go on for several more sentences, repeating my compliments for the writing, characters, and descriptions which I mentioned in previous reviews, but I think I’ll just stop with “Wow”.
