Barbara J. Duell’s Books

A Place By The BAY by Barbara J. Duell.

A Novel Of Love, Trust And A New Beginning.

M.W. Pilgrim, renowned photojournalist, has spent the last fifteen years ‘shooting war’ in the killing fields worldwide―traveling light―her camera, a .45 semi-automatic and a bottle of Jack all stashed in her backpack. She’s suffered physical wounds and mental anguish, dodging bullets and bureaucrats as she documented the decimation of human life. But she’s always survived until one day in the summer of 1995, Madi finds herself stretched to the limits of endurance while filming the genocide in Bosnia, and her luck runs out.

Severely wounded, she’s evacuated to Landstuhl Medical Hospital in Germany, and her life hangs in limbo until trauma surgeon Neal Baker takes over her care. But common sense and caution have never been her way of life. Barely able to walk, Madi defies her doctors, a decision she soon regrets, and her actions will torment her, even after she returns home only to be caught up in a different kind of war that has invaded the streets of San Francisco, the thrown-aways kids that fight for survival, lost souls the world has forgotten.

Colonel Neal Baker, trauma surgeon, has dedicated his life to medicine. He’s fought anger and fatigue, operating in field hospitals never far from the raging battles lines where the wounded mount, and too many die or go mad.

Reassigned to Landstuhl, he faces another kind of anguish. Gone are the battlefields, but not the wounded who arrived daily, testing his skills and resolve, demanding he put aside his personal life until one night a woman arrives, airlifted from the carnage of Srebrenica―unconscious, broken and bleeding―and his skills are again put to the test.

Doctor-patient relations take on a new meaning as he disregards protocol and becomes infatuated yet frustrated by the tall blonde with penetrating blue-gray eyes. But it’s Madi’s sassy mouth that drives him wild and fuels his desire. Medical orders mean nothing to her; promises are broken, and her determination to do the impossible puts lives in jeopardy.

Blindsided by a passion that builds each day, Neal Baker joins Madi on a journey that speeds past chaos only to end in a final separation. Haunted by desire and doubt, he will travel halfway around the world to find her.

Caught up in her battle to save the lives of the lost and broken, he finds more, an awakening of hope―a gathering of love and pain―then trust that leads to a new beginning.

Review by Brandi Baker: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. EXCELLENT READ!!!! Great book about how being compassionate can change you and so many other lives. It doesn’t even have to be a BIG gesture like the heroine in this book. Anyone can make an impact on others if you just take the time to understand the why and how a person is where they are. This book is also very eye opening about the state and mind set of teenage homelessness. It is well worth reading!

Review by Lori Tucson: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Excellent Book!! I have read all of Barbara’s books and this one was different than any of her other books. I read this book in 1 week and it was the best. It caught my attention from the first couple of chapters and I couldn’t put it down…. wonderful book!! Can’t wait until the next one!!

Review by Kate: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Real life scenarios! I have read all of Barbara’s book and this by far is my favorite. It has a lot of things we all can relate to and have seen at some point in our lives- current and past. She also has the perfect amount of “steaminess” between the love interests. Great job!

Review by Amazon Joan Harris: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. A Place by the Bay. This book will keep you reading until you finish. It highlights the Bosnia war and how horrible it was. I cried though it all. The main character and the horrors of PTSD will also help you understand what people go through with PTSD. Barbara Duell is a fantastic writer.

Review by Karen Cafarella: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Great Book. The story was amazing. Plus bringing to light about PTSD and the thrown away children helps us to remember everyone is fighting a battle we know nothing about.

Beyond A Dream by Barbara J. Duell.

Two People ~ One dream.

Lilianarose McKenna has lived her life with the same passion and responsibility that brought her Spanish ancestors to the rich fertile land by the Pacific Ocean in search of a new life over two centuries ago. Bound to the land, the matriarch of her family, and a world-renowned portrait artist, Lili has everything except someone to love her. She wants more, an itch she can’t scratch, not yet, so she’s put aside her dreams, for now, but someday, maybe.

Charles Phillip Ashland, Earl of Ashbourne, inherited a title, a dilapidated Manor near land’s end, and nothing more, but he wants more. He’s taken anger and determination and built an empire, acquiring more wealth than he could spend in ten lifetimes. Charles has everything a human could want, yet he has nothing that truly matters. He succeeded in business but failed miserably as a father, but soon he will have time to do better, to find and live his dream. Yes, soon. From the quaint town of San Juan Capistrano, California to a small village by the sea in Devon, England fate has set a course for two people to find themselves, even though they have no idea they are lost, aided by a handful of relatives, a village of eager helpers, and one huge, hairy dog.

Review by Kate: 4.0 out of 5 Stars. Make you Want to Travel to England’s countryside by the Sea! This is the third book I have read of Barbara Duell and love to support the independent authors who write wonderful stories. Her vivid descriptions of the places her characters live and travel are unsurpassed- you would think she is paid by the cities and countries travel bureaus, as they really make you want to visit those places. This book did make me wish I had a lot more money like the main characters to be able to enjoy the luxuries they were able to enjoy but in today’s world I am grateful for my health, and what i have in life. Can’t wait to see what else and where she visits in her next book!

Review by Brandi Baker: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Wonderful book! I loved this book from the beginning to the end!! All of the characters and places were so great to follow all the way through the story. I couldn’t put this book down!! Love the spirit of adventure and taking time for one’s self even if it was only by accident and fate!!

Review by Barbara Johnson: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. What a great book to read! The book was so fascinating. The combination of California history, and Barbara Duell’s memories of England and Europe from visits make this a most enjoyable book to read. I have enjoyed all her books and hope to see more in the near future.

Review by Parker: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Highly Recommend Barbara J. Duell’s book, Beyond a Dream! The eloquent writing pulled me in from the beginning and I savored each word. The well-developed characters and magnificent imagery allowed me to escape to the beautiful settings and witness the adventure unfold. Thank you for writing this outstanding book!

Review by Karen Cafarella: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Great Book! Wonderful book. The history and adventures they share make it hard to put the book down.

Review by Laura Kay: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Heartwarming & Emotional. Barbara J. Duell has done it again! OMG, this story would make such a great movie! I have enjoyed every book written by Barbara J. Duell but this one really hit my heart.

Written with compassion, humor, and wrenching heartache, I grew to love the characters and at the end of the book, wished for more.

The story begins with Lili McKenna who lives in a spacious hacienda on thousands of acres she inherited from her Spanish forefather two hundred years ago. Hacienda de la Montoya is her home, shared with a network of people who are family to her.

Charles Phillip Ashland, Earl of Ashbourne, lives on a manor which has been in his family for hundreds of years. He has built an empire, acquiring more wealth than he knows what to do with. Even so, he realizes he doesn’t have what he really wants, someone to love.

Lili and Charles caught and kept my attention immediately — the sizzling chemistry was tastefully written. I always enjoy watching characters fall in love and overcome obstacles.

This story was filled with a family of characters, all of whom I loved.

Review by Jim and Christy Squires: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Eloquent! Rich in imagery and strength & beauty in characters. At a time where my own life has its own drama, love story and obstacles; this book has resonated with my soul. I’ve not picked up a novel in years, and what a refreshing one to enjoy! Barbara distills for her faithful readers plentiful imagery and I am transcended to a place where the story is rich in history and the characters are beautiful each in their own way. Never do I give a spoiler! This is a MUST read! You will be glad you did!!

Review by Kindle Customer: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. EXCEPTIONAL BOOK, GREAT READING! I read this book twice for the shear enjoyment of reading it again. Scenes, dialog, and characterization, exceptional. I found myself occasionally laughing at some of the character expression and dialog. Toward the end we get to know Maggie better through an unexpected letter which brought everything together – perfect ending.

Beyond Love by Barbara J. Duell.

He’d only planned to run away from home, but when eight-year-old David Hampton is almost run over by a speeding car in downtown Sausalito and rescued by a beautiful woman with a man’s name, his plans change. The one thing he has always wanted was a mom and decides Michael McCall is the mom he wants. All he has to do is convince his dad, and Mrs. McCall, but David has no way of knowing that Michael is a mom, or she was, until a tragic accident took her son and husband two years ago, or that she has refused to grieve and eventually suffered a physical and mental breakdown. Her best friend, Sarah, has checked her out of the hospital and into a cottage in Sausalito, California, to recuperate.

David thinks it should be easy, but sparks fly when Michael and David’s father, Dr. Richard Hampton, meet. The uptight doctor does not want her parenting advice at the time, but changes his mind and offers her a job as David’s “companion” the next day.

Yes, it should be easy, but unlike stories with happy endings, this is not a fairy tale; this is real life. It does not take long before Professor Michael McCall and Dr. Richard Hampton are at odds with each other, even as they try to deny the fire that ignites into an immediate desire so intense that it threatens to destroy their path to happy-ever-after, a path that will demand they travel beyond their lust and the heat of their passion, a journey steeped with pain, a constant reminder of love given and lost. A journey where the past must be put away, freeing them to find the courage to reach Beyond Love.

Will Michael recover from her heartbreak and act on her feelings for Richard? And will Richard allow himself to love again after the betrayal of his ex-wife? Could the innocent expectations of David be their guide?

Review by Jackie Paulson: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Love and romance destined to meet in a chance encounter. Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2014. Verified Purchase. This must be one of my favorite books of 2014! Beyond Love by Barbra J. Duell knows what her audience wants to read. If two people are destined to meet, I believe God provides the gateway. It is all in his timing not ours. When eight-year-old David Hampton ran away from home, he was almost hit by a car which a lady rescued him. I don’t know about you but I remember being eight years old and hating life and my parents and wanting to run away. Since David Hampton does not have a mom, he dreams of having one. I know when my mom died, all I ever wanted was a mom as well. It is very realistic that the rescue was planned by God. David’s dad is a professor and a meeting took place where as they both looked at one another “time seemed to stop.” Do you believe in love at first sight? This book will draw you in and take you page by page until you reach the ending. Will this be a marriage destined by God or will the couple just have a journey in love and romance? It’s one book you have to pick up in 2014! I love the cover of this book! The couple going to kiss the house in the background makes me want to read it and find out what Love has in store for this eight-year-old boy and the single father whom needs attention, love, and a family.

Review by Bertiejf: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Boys Meet Girl. Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2014. Verified Purchase. I really enjoyed this story. It is sweet and light with just enough oomph to keep it interesting.

The story itself is pretty typical, boy meets girl, boy is attracted to girl, boy and girl fight like cats and dogs, boy wins girl? Well, maybe. What I liked were the extras that were thrown in. Michael, a young widow who has been taking some time off to recuperate from the storms that life has thrown at her, is anything but mild and retiring. She meets young David as he is taking an unapproved trip to see his grandma. When Michael finally meets Richard, David’s dad, the sparks begin to fly. Now, David and Richard are both accustomed to having their way, so when they decide that Michael should become the new Nanny…. Well, Michael is swept into the family dynamic. This family will never be the same!

Ms. Duell is an excellent writer who handles the conflict between Michael and Richard very well. The characters she has created are believable, as are the situations that they find themselves in. She handles conflict, romance, friendship, and love with a deft pen that will keep you involved right up to the very end. Recommend!

Review by Shari Broyer, Author, Editor: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Trust is the Name of the Game. Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2014. Verified Purchase. What does it take to move beyond the “in love” stage to the “lasting love” stage? Trust. It’s something that doesn’t come easily to the heroine of this story OR to the hero. From the moment Michael, the woman with the man’s name, rescues David, the hero’s son, and berates the hero himself (Richard) for not being there for his child, these two lock horns and battle almost to the end to reach beyond the passion, and yes, the love they also feel for one another, to find the kind of trust that will carry them through. I won’t spoil the ending for you, but it’s definitely an “awww” moment. I absolutely loved this story and I highly recommend the read!

Review by Cheryl Wheelright: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. You will love Beyond Love! Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2015. I read Beyond Love and couldn’t put it down; I had to know how the author would lead this reader through her richly developed characters’ complex relationships with one another. The author’s tone is one of caring. She imparts full flesh to each of her characters through detailed development of them, and her authentic voice is one her readers can trust. The author’s narrative, written in third person, deftly weaves the reader through her characters’ extremely painful pasts, their coping mechanisms with their pain, and how it impacts their present. Duell acknowledges and shells out flaws for both her main characters. Readers can clearly identify with her characters’ struggles.

Duell is gifted in her use of dialogue: It moves the plot forward. More, it is realistic. It’s the way people really talk whether they’re joyful, hopeful, doubtful, angry, fearful, confused, panicked, in pain, or fully drowning in grief. Her descriptors include the skillful use of figurative language and well-placed humor, as well. Sentence lengths are varied and the author has an awareness of the use of white space. Duell’s attention to detail is sharp and world-building: The reader is firmly placed in time and place from beginning to end. Duell’s talented use of language creates intense sexual tension between her two main characters, a theme that is woven, and builds, throughout the story. When the two lovers finally give their sexual attraction the inevitable attention it demands, elegant eroticism–with plenty of steam–rises from the pages. The theme of love, and its many types, is constant, and is carefully braided throughout the story.

If you are looking for a well-written, realistic, and satisfying love story, one with richly developed and believable characters you can relate to and root for, this book is an excellent choice. You won’t be disappointed.

Review by Big Crazy Life: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. This is the perfect book for a cold winter day. Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2016. This is the perfect book for a cold winter day. Ironically, it takes place in the San Francisco Bay area where it’s pretty much cold year-round. I enjoyed this book because it’s a fast, easy read. Its not always predictable and keeps you guessing. I’m looking forward to more by Barbara.

Review by Sylvia: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. There is so much to Beyond Love. Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2014.Beyond Love is just that. It is the story of everything that is beyond love. A little boy looking for a mother, a mother who lost her child, love romance and a story well worth telling. I just fell in love with the characters and this story. Every little boy wants a mother to love him, and the grief of losing a child can be all too much to take, unless there is another child you can bestow your love upon. Excellent read and a story that will leave a smile upon your face.

The Far Side Of The Rainbow by Barbara J. Duell.

A Novel Of Trust, Commitment, And Unquestionable Love.

Some people believe all components of the universe are linked by hidden affinities and that the kismet of one individual can bond with the destiny of another, each one the protagonist of their own drama, yet linked to another. Coincidence or fate? Across space and time, four troubled souls ask this question.

Mackenzie Chapman, born into wealth and abandoned at birth, spent her childhood seeking validation, moving into adulthood and the financial world as an introvert, extraordinarily competent and high functioning, but not someone anyone really knows. Using systematic logic to solve a mystery long buried, she travels across the country only to have her organized life fall apart and intertwine with strangers.

In one deciding moment, the life of Doctor Peter Farrell, handsome, compassionate, and charismatic, hangs by a thread as he fights to live. Months pass before his quest to regain what was lost–his prayers for what once was–are answered. Strong and determined, he succeeds, only to be blindsided by strangers desperate for his help.

Ten-year-old Joshua and his tiny sister, Annie, are orphaned, then abandoned. Abused by a social system that exists to protect them, they cling to each other in fear and doubt until one rainy night, fate steps in.

Or was it just a coincidence that an unknown person, a woman with golden hair and a gentle voice, heard their cry for help and reached out to them without thought or reason?

Review by Karen Cafarella: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Great story! Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2023. Great story. Also, brings to light some of the issues we as a community need to be aware of and hopefully help to solve.

Theo’s Diary by Barbara J. Duell.

A Novel Of War, Love, and Regret.

Theo sat on the old bench across from the cemetery and pulled his jacket close to his chest. The service for his closest friend had ended an hour ago, but he would wait. After everyone left, Theo would go into the Friedhof, place his single rose atop the freshly turned soil, and say his goodbyes. Now he sat in the cold and felt old. Life was such a temporary place, and he knew he could not wait any longer to do what he needed to do. He had to write down all he’d hide away years ago; memories buried deep in a private place. Theo had to reach beyond the comfort of these new days and unwrapped the terrible; the hurt and anguish, of love, found then lost, regrets locked away but never forgotten.

Twenty years later, and a continent away, family secrets revealed to Rick Dahlman demand he controls his disbelief and anger as he travels to Europe to unravel over thirty years of lies and deceit, a journey steeped in history. In a quest to find answers to his identity, he will meet the classic, elegant Anna. As Rick demands answers to his very existence from ghosts of the past, his emotional resolve is blindsided by the beautiful, headstrong Karlotta. Lost in a whirlpool of passion and desire so strong only their love and the surprising answers Rick finds in Theo’s diary will guide them to the awakening of a new life. And so begins Theo’s Dairy. The reminiscence of love and pain, war and regret, a life that spans two world wars, two continents, and almost ninety-one years. In his simple way, Theo will share truth and lies, dreams and devastation, relationships so filled with passion you will stop and draw in a breath, just to slow time. And lives will be changed.

Come Hear The Whisper Of Time by Barbara J. Duell.

A Journey Away From Loss.

Come Hear the Whisper of Time is a collection of tales, part Fact, Fiction, and Fantasy. Some of the stories that have gathered dust over time are of the First People, snippets I have heard all my life, and thoughts that would not stay locked away, memories of my sons coming of age, of my mom and dad; the rest, novellas from my overactive imagination. I have written about love, that indescribably wonderful feeling that only love can convey.

Whisper of Time became my lifeline, a thin thread that kept me from the edge of madness after the loss of my sons, and this gathering of words will ask that you open your mind and just imagine as you travel to another dimension, a premise requiring trust and faith. I am at peace when I follow the ways of those who gave me life. It is from their tradition and courage, and their love of all the Great Spirit has loaned to us that allows me to give thanks each day, for I am so blessed. So I reach out to you from within my soul, hoping to find refuge, a safe place to share what has gathered within me from the beginning.

Review by Karen Cafarella: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Beautiful Book! Lovely stories that reach the soul.

Review by Kah Wah tan: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. It’s not a “whisper”! Stories of long ago, stories of love on earth and in the heavens, self-thoughts and about family members….. a “warm” collection of words/thoughts that is kept in myself, long after reading.

Review by Fantasia Press: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Deep and Thoughtful! With beautiful prose and flowing poetry, the author paints a picture of love and loss through short stories, scenes, and poems over the course of this book. Be warned – this book is not an ‘easy’ read. The stories are often heart-wrenching, and the book covers sadness from the loss of the author’s deeply personal losses, but there are moments of closeness and happiness as well.

I enjoyed the imaginative tales of the First People, bringing beauty as they blended with the harsh reality of life. This book was different than anything I had read before, and I think the blended style of prose, poetry and photos really creates a much fuller experience than one can get from simple prose – even the blank pages were done well at appropriate moments.

I recommend this book to people who are seeking something different – something deep and moving which will bring home the joys and sorrows of life.

Review by Cheryl Wheelright: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. And love as she shares her deep and sustaining belief system! A deeply reflective and introspective book of stories, poems, art, and legends that conveys the author’s nearly paralyzing losses and her journey back to life. The author’s words resonate with authenticity, spirituality, and love as she shares her deep and sustaining belief system. A must read for anyone who struggles to cope with life after the loss of a loved one.

Review by Nancy Sampley: 5.0 out of 5 Stars. Compassionate loving and caring book! This book is composed of several short stories. The author’s hero has to be her mom. She taught her everything she knew… She taught her how to be strong and become a lady at a very young age. She became a little lady, she would do what a big lady could do, to take care of all the kids. She did a good job. She was like their mother.

About The Author: A Journey To Another Place. International best-selling author, Barbara J. Duell loves to travel around the world, sometimes without ever leaving her home. A history buff, she continues to seek answers as to how we got to where we are today, how different civilizations have changed, usually due to the impact of war.

Barbara can be found each day at her computer, laughing or crying, just tagging along wherever her characters decide to take her. Barbara has lived by the sea, high in the pine forest where eagles soar, in a valley near the river’s edge, and now resides in the delicate land of the southwestern desert.
