5 Stars: Action Adventure That Will Keep You Turning The Page.
This book opens with main character, Rob Marrino (decorated Army field medic) arriving in the resort town of Pinecrest, Pennsylvania. Rob’s family cabin is nestled in an “ancient forest” filled with pine and hemlock trees. The cabin sits at the edge of “spring-fed” Butterfly Lake. Rob is preparing for his best friend Tex (decorated Marine sniper), and his family to arrive. A relaxing, reinvigorating vacation is what they are all looking forward to.
After some fun on the lake, the adults busy themselves with grilling and preparing lunch. As big black and yellow butterflies flutter on the purple blooming shrubs, Lori is so intent on catching a butterfly in her butterfly net, she is unaware that she is being watched.
Vacation suddenly turns into a parent’s worst nightmare.
Let me bring you into the story (Chapter 8) as Rob and Tex had to sleep overnight on the trail.
…“Early the next morning, Rob woke to Tex mumbling, loudly, in his sleep. He couldn’t make out what his friend was trying to say, as he nudged him awake: “Hey, buddy, hey, you okay?”
…Tex sat up and blinked at Rob, with a strange, scared look in his eyes. “That damn crazy dream again!” he fumed. “My Lori, calling me from the woods.”
…Rob grabbed his pack. “Partner, it’s going to be light soon – in a half-hour or so. Let’s see what we’ve got to eat – I’ve got a feeling we’re going to need it.”
…Tex stood and stretched. “Good idea, Doc: I feel a little famished, myself.”
…The two shared some beef jerky and trail mix, finished one of two canteens of water, and readied themselves to take to the trail again.
…Tex smiled at his friend. They’d been through a lot together, but nothing as tough as this one was for him. He tried to stay calm, as he prayed continuously for his daughter, but it was getting harder by the minute.
…Rob cleaned up the campsite, loaded his pack and checked his shotgun.
…“She’s out there, buddy,” Tex said, clutching his rifle in one hand and pointing with his knife, in the other. “We’re close. I can feel it.”
…Rob felt for him. He saw the strain in his friend’s face, in his eyes. The incident was wearing him down, but Tex was not alone in it; the big man had helped Rob through more than one problem, and Rob would do anything to make it right for his friend.
…“I feel it my man,” Rob replied: “we’re going to find her.”
…“Yep, today is the day! I can’t wait to get my hands on those creeps.” Tex added, as he started walking across the small clearing. It was the time when night gave way to day, and the woods began coming to life. The birds were up, fluttering around the trees and chirping serenades, while a few bushy-tailed gray squirrels scurried about, looking for their breakfast.
…Tex looked and listened, moving on point, as the two slowly made their way back onto the overgrown trail.”
…This is tale of two friends, determined to put their military training and skills to the test in a dense, dark, mountainous terrain.
…I encourage you thrill seekers to pick up this book. Realistic characters, great dialog and a well written action adventure will keep you turning the page. You will not want to put this book down. I am looking forward to the next book in this adventure series.
