The Hidden Stairway is a novelette based in modern times of an extremely rich family of Scottish Ancestry. This family in Ohio has more money than King Midas. They have lived in Ohio since before the French and Indian War of 1755. Tony is trying to solve the mystery concerning their mansion and what happened with his ancestors. This historical fiction contains treasure, Indians, fighting, love, and a wedding.

The Maid of Bitmore Swamp by Shirley McLain.

Book 2 of 2: Witches and Dragons.

The Maid of Bitmore Swamp was a vile, filthy witch, ugly in her nature and looks. Her name was Bethelda Nightshade from a village called Candlewick. After running away from her pleasure-seeking step-father at the age of fourteen, she had spent most of her life in Bitmore Swamp. She spent her years in the swamp conniving and cheating mortal men and storing her money.

As payment for a spell she created, she received a baby girl, whom she named Anya. Bethelda groomed Anya to replace her when the time came. Bethelda’s teenage daughter rebelled and told her mother she would live her life outside of the swamp. Bethelda feared for her daughter.

Bethelda left the swamp for the first time after many years to seek help from her twin sister, Bethany. That one visit created a change in Bethelda. She cleaned herself up with the aid of her sister and once again created the beautiful woman she was meant to be.

Beth found a man named Talmadge Merriweather to assist Bethelda with her plans. Tal proved to be invaluable to both Bethelda and Anya. He saved them more than once.

Bethelda was a changed woman and told Anya she would be leaving the swamp with her. They could go to Candlewick under the guise of a widowed Duchess, Bethelda DeCrecy, and her lovely daughter from France. Bethelda’s goals were to keep anyone from learning of her past and purchasing her dream estate.

Bethelda and Anya are picked up on the road to Candlewick by Viscount Randolph, who became a friend to the Duchess. He introduced his cousin, Lord Percival Andrews, to the women. Lord Andrews requested all to call him Percy. He was a personal advisor to the King and Queen of Overton, who Bethelda knew from years past. He was also the Queen’s cousin.

Bethelda was set up to reveal her identity and was also blackmailed. Does she have a chance to live out her life in the piece she wants, or will she fall victim to her past?

5 Stars: Mother and Daughter Tale!

‘The Maid of Bitmore Swamp’ is a continuation from ‘Princess Adele’s Dragon’ in this Witches and Dragons Fantasy. Witch Bethelda Nightshade, came from a village named Candlewick. At age fourteen Bethelda ran away from home. She now lives in the Bitmore Swamp, cheating mortal men. As payment for a spell she created, she received a baby girl, whom she named Anya.

This is a tale of a mother and daughter. Bethelda grooms Anya to replace her in the swamp. Bethelda’s teenage daughter rebels and is determined to live outside the swamp. Not wanting to lose her daughter, Bethelda comes up with a plan.

… “Bethelda completed her packing, which didn’t take long because she didn’t own anything. She saw a big shopping trip in her future. That will fill me full of anxiety, since I know nothing about shopping. I went one time with Mother. It will be one of those learning experiences I’ve heard mentioned.

…Moving the treasure from the cave would require detailed planning. She decided to use magic wagons to get her gold and jewels from the treasure cave. I will put a spell over the wagons to disguise what’s in them. I think I will make the wagons look like they are loaded with hay.”

On their adventure they encounter royalty, strangers, finagle a few transactions, use magic to their advantage while side stepping the danger, that is always present. Will it be possible for them to fit in. Will their new identities keep them safe, or will the past catch up with them?

I found this story quite entertaining.

Home Away From Home by Shirley McLain.

A Guide For Understanding The Survey Process and Long Term Care.

Sometimes we all have to face the inevitable and make tough choices. Dealing with the aging of your parents is one of them. Finding your loved ones the right home is a delicate matter, and it can be a stressful time as it is easy to get lost in the mounds of information. That’s why you need this book. It was written by an insider who worked in all the levels of the system and she wants to share all she knows about the system with you.

The goal is to take some burden off your shoulders so you can give your attention to the people who need you. In some cases, time is of the essence, and you want to enjoy the time you have with your loved home. This book will equip you with the best tool to pick the most favorable option.

Apart from valuable tips, this book shows how families of potential residents can influence the system and why the survey system works and doesn’t. It’s a reminder relatives have a voice, and they should use it.

Every situation is different. While some elders may require assistance with daily living, others prefer living in a senior community. This book focus’s on Long Term Care.

5 Stars: Every Consumer Must Have This Information On Long Term Care!

Author Shirley McLain is a retired RN with an extensive background in Geriatrics and Long-Term Care. She offers this book ‘Home Away From Home’ as a ‘A Guide For Understanding The Survey Process and Long Term Care’.

Long Term Care is something we all will face if we live long enough, if not for ourselves, for someone we love. This compressive short read will educate you and save you time and emotional energy.

Six short chapters cover:

…..The Beginning Process-Types of Facilities: Shirley McLain lists seven choices that are readily available.

…..The Facility of Choice: Shirley McLain recommends before you decide on a facility, ask to see their last CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) survey results. Shirley goes into the survey in great detail and step by step. I found this very interesting and educational.

Once you read and digest this entire survey, you will understand the high standards spelled out for these facilities along, accountable, and the ‘Key Elements of Noncompliance’. Each facility gets rated and it is up to the consumer to know this information. The Key: As a consumer, you must do your homework and ask for the facility latest survey evaluation results.

After reading this information, I am dumfounded as to how so many elderly people died during the Covid 19 epidemic. If all the standards spelled out in this book is complied with, my only conclusion is underlying health and comorbidities. Even so our death in long term care was too high, according to these standards. That is discussion for another day, which I hope Author Shirley McLain writes about in the future.

In chapter five, Shirley goes into some important recommendations and end the books with a chapter on ‘Resources’.

I recommend this book “Home Away From Home’ for anyone who is aging, in need of a long tern facility or has a friend or loved one going into or already in a long-term facility. I invite you to check out all Shirley McLain’s books.

Dobyns Chronicles by Shirley McLain.

Here is a Treat for HISTORICAL FICTION fans as well as those who are fascinated by late 19th century and early 20th century historical events in both Texas and OKLAHOMA.  This Historical novel is loosely based on a true-life story of a brave Oklahoman from the mid 1880’s to 1955.  This dramatic story also showcases the struggles and intermarriage of an American cowboy and an American Indian.

Dobyns Chronicles is a captivating celebration of the life of Charlie Dobyns. His life began in northeast Texas near Bonham, on the Red River. His Cherokee mother and cowboy father strove to survive on their river valley ranch. Tragedy ended this way of life for Charlie in 1888. Follow him through Chickasaw Territory and on to McAlester in eastern Oklahoma. This is a story of a changing way of life and adaptations made to survive. Charlie’s strong passion for life and dignity equipped him for survival as he raised his siblings with, likeability and dignity. It’s a story of loss, misfortune, hard times and heartbreak, but also love, determination, kindness, joy and spirituality. Follow Charlie’s life through the adventures that shaped the man he became, and that of his family for generations.

From the Author: I remember meeting my Great Grandfather, Charlie, as a child and grew up hearing the stories of his life. He had the strength and courage to do what needed to be done during the hard times. You never heard a bad word said about he or Mila. Dobyns Chronicles was a labor of love. I wrote this book as a tribute to my mother’s family. For the strength and courage that was demonstrated. The love given and passed down through the generations of the family, and the Oklahoma land they shared helped hold the family together.
